2003 Mercury Mountaineer. Kelley Blue Book value with current mileage (248K) is $5379 in FAIR condition, though I would really rate it as better than FAIR. You can tell by looking at it that this car has been well taken care of with routine maintenance and oil changes within every 4000 miles. New front tires, rear tires pass inspection. The engine was rebuilt at about 190K by my father and brother (dad is a mechanic). Runs beautifully, but torque converter is noisy which is a sign that it may need transmission work in the not too distant future. This is part of the reason we are starting the bidding so low (the other part is that we simply need the cash ASAP). We got a quote on a replacement remanufactured transmission with installation at about $1500. I would like to note once more that the car runs and drives great! We drive it regularly and have had no mechanical issues.
Being an older, High-mileage vehicle it does have some defects: -6-disc CD changer works when it wants to. -Seat heater switch is broken. Must pull fuse to turn the heat off. -Tear in driver's seat (see picture) -2 patches of rust on passenger's side quarter panel. One was treated and primed in black, other is untouched. -Minor oil leak. Not sure from where. Now for the PROS: -Cosmetically in excellent condition inside and out. -All power options work perfectly unless otherwise noted above. -9/14 inspection. -Front tires have less than 300 miles on them. -Engine runs beautifully! -Doesn't burn any oil. |

Ford announces free brake pad offer if customers stop by dealers
Mon, 04 Aug 2014These days, when you buy a new car, it's not unreasonable to expect a certain period of free maintenance to come along as well. Sometimes this is through the life of the warranty, in other cases a little less. But Ford Motor Company is going beyond those deals for at least one part of its cars. As of now, if you buy a set of Motorcraft brake pads for a Ford, Lincoln or Mercury model, you get free replacements for as long as you own the vehicle. The offer is good at Ford or Lincoln dealers and Quick Lane Tire & Auto Centers.
"We will replace the pads for as long as you own the vehicle," said Elizabeth Weigandt to Autoblog. She did clarify that the Motorcraft pads are generally for models from the '90s or newer. Also, to take advantage of this program, a person must return to the same dealer each time to get the free parts.
Of course, Ford isn't just handing out brake pads to anyone who walks by; there are certain stipulations. First, the components have to be worn down to less than three millimeters to be eligible, and the buyer still has to pay for the labor to install them. If the model is used as a fleet vehicle for commercial purposes like as a taxi or limousine, this offer also doesn't apply; the same thing for racecars. On the plus side, if you recently bought a set of pads from one of the participating locations, you're still in luck. The deal covers parts purchased as of July 1.
Ford recalling 370,000 Crown Vic, Grand Marquis and Town Car models
Fri, 30 Aug 2013The Detroit News is reporting that Ford will recall some 370,000 Crown Victoria (pictured), Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car vehicles from model years 2005 through 2011, for an issue regarding the lower intermediate steering shaft. 355,000 of the vehicles in question were sold in the US, with the other 15,000 sold in Canada.
The report indicates that corrosion of the lower intermediate steering shaft could cause a "loss of steering," presumably because of a partial or complete failure of the part. The report points out the dealers will inspect and replace the offending steering component for recalled cars, and may also secure a lower steering column bearing and replace the upper intermediate steering shaft as needed. The company is unaware of any reports of the faulty part causing any accidents or injuries.
Ford helpfully lists states in which corrosion is more likely to have taken place, mostly in the Snow Belt, as you might guess. Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia are listed.
NHTSA probing 2000-2003 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable models over throttle issue
Mon, 29 Oct 2012A potential issue with the speed control cable collar has got the 2003-20003 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable under the spotlight of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. If the collar breaks it can cause the throttle to be stuck open.
The issue is limited to vehicles with the 3.0-liter V6 Duratec. There are just 50 complaints so far out of 310,000 cars, but the NHTSA has begun an investigation into whether a recall should be issued.
