Up for sale is a very rare 1969 Mercury Cougar Eliminator. The Eliminator was Mercury's answer to sister-company Ford's Mach I and Boss Mustangs, and is a very rare and special muscle car... only 2,250 total were produced in 1969. They were only made in four colors: Competition Orange, White, Yellow, and Bright Blue Metallic. There were only 106 made in blue, making it the rarest of the rare. How many are left?
This particular car is in excellent condition inside and out. It shows 74,473 miles on the odometer, believed to be original. One repaint in original Bright Blue Metallic, fresh reproduction factory interior, perfect dash pad, gauges, etc. Gas gauge reads a little lower than actual, and the rim blow horn does not work, but otherwise everything works as it should, no apparent issues. The body is straight, paint is nice and shiny, interior great, running gear strong, etc. A great example of a very rare car. I'd rate the car a solid 7.0-7.5 of 10 or higher in all respects. Not perfect, but very nice throughout. Lights, turn signals *(sequential!), headlamp doors, gauges, tach, speedo, interior courtesy lights, etc. all work. Nice upgraded AM/FM/CD/Aux radio, and I'll include the ordinal as well. The Marti report verifies the car as an authentic Eliminator, and features the following information: Serial Number Information Serial Number 9F91M564424 9 1969 F Built at Dearborn 91 Cougar Hardtop M 351 4v High Performance Engine 64424th Mercury vehicle scheduled for production at Dearborn DOOR DATA PLATE INFORMATION: 65A Cougar Hardtop 6 Bright Blue Metallic Paint, Ford #3077-A 5AA BlackVinyl High Back Bucket Seats 16D Scheduled for build: April 16th, 1969 54 Seattle Ordering District 9 3.25 Optional Axle Ratio X FMX Automatic Transmission Dealer # 54C009 Your vehicle was ordered with the following features: Eliminator Package FMX Merc-O-Matic transmission Optional axle ratio F70-14 Raised white letter tires Console Power front disc brakes Power steering AM radio Decor Group Remote control left hand racing mirrors Heavy-duty suspension While every effort is being made to describe this vehicle accurately, it is in fact a 44-year-old classic, and therefore being sold as-is, without warranty or guarantee expressed, written, or implied. You are welcomed and encouraged to have a private vehicle inspection performed at your cost. Transportation is the full responsibility of the buyer. I will make myself available to your shipper for loading. Payment is due within three days of auction's end via bank wire transfer or cash in person. You may call me directly at 360-936-9257 with any questions you may have. I reserve the right to end the auction early, as I have the vehicle listed for sale locally as well. I am open to a "best offer" if you would like to make yours. |

Junkyard Gem: 1991 Mercury Capri
Mon, Sep 19 2016Ford has gotten a lot of use out of the Capri name in the United States. First, there was the Lincoln Capri in the 1950s, followed by the Ford Capri Mk1 (which was sold by Mercury dealers in the USA but never actually badged as a Mercury). Then came the 1979-1986 Mercury Capri, built on the very successful Fox Platform and essentially a clone of the Mustang. Finally, in 1991, the Australian Ford Capri came to the United States. Here is an example of this rare car that I spotted in a Northern California self-service yard not long ago. Mechanically speaking, the 1991-1994 Capri was a Mazda 323 under the skin, complete with a member of the same B-series engine family that went into such cars as the Miata and Ford Escort. So, for a few years in the early 1990s, car shoppers who wanted a sporty Mazda convertible could choose between a Miata and a Capri. The Capri had front-wheel-drive, but could be had with factory turbocharging. These cars were reliable and fun, but had a tough time competing with the Miata in the showroom battles. You'll see the occasional example now and then, but most of the 1991-1994 Capris have met the same fate that awaits this one. Related Video:
What do you do with a fake Bugatti Veyron for $60k?
Tue, Mar 29 2016Replica cars are a challenging labor of love because builders spend countless hours recreating a vehicle that people immediately compare to the real thing. Perhaps, the person behind this Mercury Cougar-based Bugatti Veyron should look for another way to pass that time. The coupe is currently for sale on eBay Motors for $59,900. The builder deserves some credit because the fiberglass body looks acceptable in the photos from farther away. The car might even fool a few people from a distance. However, the devil is in the details, and the closer you look, the worse this gets. The side intakes are especially rough. The red interior is atrocious. It's essentially the Cougar's cabin but in an eye-searing shade accented with lots of fake carbon fiber. The seller's eBay Motors ad really tries to market the look, though. "You slide in to [sic] this extremely comfortable leather interior and you feel like your bank account just quadrupled in size," the listing says. Don't expect to win any top speed titles in this Veyron replica, either. Rather than a mid-mounted quad-turbo W16, a 3.0-liter V6 from a Mercury Sable sits at the front. Thanks to an upgraded intake and exhaust, the seller claims, "It doesn't sound like your grandmas [sic] Sable." We wish the seller the best of luck, but the asking price of nearly $60,000 is probably too optimistic. We would still think twice about buying it even after taking a zero off that figure, but at least this thing is fun to look at. Related Video:
NHTSA advances investigation of Ford Crown Victoria headlights
Sat, Aug 15 2015The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is opening a preliminary evaluation into reports of suddenly failing headlights on 517,945 examples of the 2003-2005 Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis. The government started looking into this problem in April when the North Carolina Consumers Council filed a defect petition with the agency. Now, the inquiry has moved to the next step. According to NHTSA's documentation (as a PDF), it examined its own database and worked with Ford to come up with a total of 3,609 complaints of the front lighting control module suddenly failing. When this happens, drivers lose the low-beam headlights, but the high-beams can be used by holding the stalk. Sometimes turning the switch off and on fixes the issue. Additionally, there are 15 allegations of crashes, and one reported shoulder injury. NHTSA's preliminary evaluations "evaluate the scope, frequency, and consequence of the alleged defect" and don't necessarily lead to a recall. NHTSA looked into this problem once before in 2008 and 2009 and decided that a recall wasn't necessary. Ford also extended the warranty on the front lighting control module for these vehicles. INVESTIGATION Subject : Loss of headlights Date Investigation Opened: AUG 10, 2015 Date Investigation Closed: Open NHTSA Action Number: PE15028 Component(s): EXTERIOR LIGHTING All Products Associated with this Investigation Vehicle Make Model Model Year(s) FORD CROWN VICTORIA 2003-2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS 2003-2005 Details Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company SUMMARY: After receiving a defect petition (DP15002) concerning the loss of headlights and other exterior lighting in model year (MY) 2003-2005 Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis vehicles, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) analyzed Vehicle Owner Questionnaire (VOQ) complaints received from consumers and identified a total of 605 reports (for all submission dates) alleging headlight failure. The complaints indicate failures of both low beam headlights typically while driving, a defect condition that was evaluated under a prior ODI investigation (PE08066). Most consumer VOQs indicate that the headlights failed suddenly and without warning leaving the driver with no forward lighting, however some report the headlights flickered or dimmed prior to turning off. In some cases drivers were able to turn the headlights back on after a period of time while others reported the headlights would not come back on at all.
