1968 Cougar X-code 390 Deluxe Interior on 2040-cars

Up for auction is this big block FE 1968 Cougar with factory X-Code 6.5 liter 390 2V with dual exhaust, 9-inch rear, C6 transmission, deluxe interior w/ bench seat, power steering, power steering and power disc brakes. Built in San Jose with DSO 53. It has decent dual exhaust. It originally had Diamond blue paint and the car appears original inside and out. The glass looks good, but the driver door needs a new spring installed on the door latch to close properly. The car sat for years until recently when I got it. I dropped and cleaned the oil pan which had very little sludge. After installing new oil and oil filter it started right up running off an external gas source. It will need a new gas tank since the gas is old. The owner added oil pressure gauge shows excellent oil pressure. The front/rear frame rails (except minor rust under the battery see photo), shock towers, trunk floors and floors all look good and solid. But both torque boxes have been repaired and the floor support on the driver side is in rusty-poor condition (see picture). The roof has some small rust holes and someone did some cheesy repairs to it (see photo). It has a working and rare trunk release lever by the driver seat and door. The coolant in the radiator is very clean. I have driven this car only twice around the block (both on YouTube (1968 Cougar X Code) and here is one link to see it run http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPz2spVlwog. It runs pretty good and stops OK on an external gas source. Power steering works well. Transmission shifts tight with good acceleration, but needs a rebuilt carb and brakes to really drive her. It has a big Holly 2-barrell on it now. The exhaust manifolds leak because in the past someone installed exhaust manifold gaskets which blew out—that’s why Ford did not use exhaust gaskets on the exhaust manifolds from the factory. The engine has the original fan shroud, air cleaner, snorkel, heat riser and S-tube. One brake light bank works. The headlights work, but the covers do not open. The parking lights do not work. I did not get keys (body shop lost them) with this Cougar so I started it by running a wire from the battery to the coil. It has 14 inch wheels up front and 15 inch in the rear—no idea why that is! I have a clean, open title for this X-Code 390 Cougar and all factory tags are in place. Will need a headliner. I just don’t have time for this Cougar project. Does Lincoln Zephyr trademark mean a return to real names?
Wed, May 25 2016Lincoln's long history includes many legendary names, and despite its short life, Zephyr retains a spot in that pantheon. Perhaps its will return once again: Ford Motor Co. applied to trademark Zephyr on May 11. Trademark filings can have ambiguous meanings, and often they're legal plays to get or keep the rights to a name. But in the last year, we've seen signs Lincoln is looking to use real names on its vehicles again. Obviously, it's keeping Navigator for its flagship sport-utility vehicle with a new model due next year. Reprising Continental for the MKS replacement was also well received. That said, Lincoln still uses the MKX and MKC "names" for its crossovers. Zephyr is a dustier moniker. It was used in the 1930s and '40s on a mid-level model spearheaded by Edsel Ford. The stylishly aerodynamic model was set between the Ford V8 De Luxe and more expensive Lincolns. It returned in 2006 as the Lincoln version of the Ford Fusion before that model was renamed MKZ. Mercury also used Zephyr on its version of the Ford Fairmont in the late 1970s and early '80s. Ford last held a trademark on the Zephyr name in 2013. The filing says Ford seeks to use Zephyr for "motor vehicles and parts and accessories therefor." That could mean a new car — or just parts. Putting the Zephyr badge back on the MKZ is the most likely bet. Meanwhile, Ford also moved to get the Thunderbird trademark on May 11 for the same vehicles and parts purpose, and it filed for the Mustang trademark for shampoo and lotions on May 4. A Lincoln spokesman said, "In the normal course of our business, we file trademarks for names," but had no further information. Related Video:
Ford's J Mays feels vindicated by Fusion reception
Tue, 25 Sep 2012It's hard to think back now, but the same man overseeing the design of the 2013 Ford Fusion also presided over a rather lackluster period in Ford design, highlighted by vehicles like the Five Hundred and Freestyle. With the redesigned Fusion receiving high praise, J Mays tells Automotive News that he feels vindicated from criticisms suggesting he's not a daring enough designer.
When Mays took over as lead of design in 1997, he admits to having quite an ego ("My head would barely fit through the door some days. I've long since gotten over myself") and the workload to match. With the Blue Oval's portfolio full of premium brands like Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo at that point, along with the bread-and-butter Ford, Lincoln and Mercury models, Mays certainly had quite the challenge.
It was in the mid-2000s that Mays took over just the premium brands, and took on the new title of Chief Creative Officer. At the time, Mays endured some criticism for looking backwards to retro styling, rather than setting a new standard for American car design - criticism that Mays says he is free from with the all-new Fusion.
Junkyard Gem: 1991 Mercury Capri XR2
Mon, Jun 5 2023Just a year after the Mazda MX-5 Miata first went on sale in the United States, Ford's Mercury Division began selling a similarly-priced two-seat convertible here. This was the 1991-1994 Mercury Capri, and I've found an example of the hot-rod turbocharged version in a northeastern Colorado car graveyard. The Capri name has an illustrious history within the Ford Empire. First used on a Lincoln in 1952, it went on to serve as the name for a hardtop version of the early-1960s Ford Consul in the UK, then as the designation for a low-end trim level on the 1966-1967 Mercury Comet. Starting in the 1969 model year in Europe (1970 in North America), Ford began selling the best-known Capri of all: a sporty coupe based on the Cortina, sold through Mercury dealers in the United States but never badged as a Mercury here. Sales of that Capri halted here after 1978 (they continued through 1986 in Europe), but the Mercury Division then moved the name over to its version of the 1979-1986 Ford Mustang. After that, Ford Australia took the Capri name for a new Mazda 323-based sports car beginning in 1989. Then Dearborn decided that an Americanized version of the Australian Capri would be a success on this side of the Pacific, and left-hand-drive Capris began showing up in American Mercury showrooms in late 1990. Today's Junkyard Gem is one of those first-model-year cars, and it's the very rare turbocharged XR2 version. While this car was intended to be a competitor for the Miata, it's really that car's Mazda cousin. Both cars got their power from 1.6-liter versions of Mazda's versatile B engine, though the Capri had the same front-wheel-drive setup as its 323/Protege (and Escort/Tracer) platform siblings. At the same time, Ford was selling Kia-built Mazdas with Festiva (and, a bit later, Aspire) badging, alongside Mazda MX-6s with Probe badges. Just to make things interesting, American Mazda dealers were selling Ford Explorers as Mazda Navajos, while Rangers with Mazda badges followed starting in 1994. The 1990s were Mazda-riffic times at Ford! This car wasn't the first Australian-designed, Mazda-based Ford product sold in the United States. That honor belongs to the 1988-1989 Mercury Tracer, which was based on the same Mazda 323 platform as the Capri and built in Mexico. Later on, the Tracer remained a member of the 323 chassis family but was a nearly identical twin to its Ford Escort sibling.
