Race Recap: 2013 Japanese Grand Prix flips several scripts [spoilers]
Mon, 14 Oct 2013Japan's Suzuka circuit is a great track that all the drivers love, but it doesn't usually provide the most thrilling, head-to-head racing. Where it does excel, however, is with surprises and "What just happened there?!" moments, and this year it was no different.
It started with Mark Webber in his Infiniti Red Bull Racing out-qualifying his teammate Sebastian Vettel for the first time this year. They were followed closely by Lewis Hamilton in the first Mercedes-AMG Petronas, the still-solid Romain Grosjean again outdoing teammate Kimi Räikkönen, Felipe Massa racing for another seat in Formula One and putting his Ferrari in fifth, then Nico Rosberg in the second Mercedes, Nico Hülkenberg in the first Sauber, Fernando Alonso in the second Ferrari, and Räikkönen continuing to do himself no favors by qualifying tenth.
For the second year in a row, the lights going out was the cue to start the first corner action...
Mercedes teases massive new Maybach coupe
Wed, Aug 10 2016Mercedes-Benz hasn't done a lot with its Maybach brand over the last few years. After killing the slow-selling standalone Maybach line, the badge sat unused, until MB slapped it on a luxed-out S600. But today, Mercedes posted a teaser of a new, two-door Maybach on its social media channels. Immediately given away by the Maybach badge on the C-pillar (and possibly one on the nose), we could be looking at a modern-day Exelero – a successor to Maybach's last coupe, a one-off, 700-horsepower rocket ship that deserved all the Darth Vader's car cliches – capable of extremely high speeds and stunning comfort. Everything from the long hood (better to accommodate some monstrous V12 engine) to the windshield's aggressive rake, to the absurdly long tail, signals a 200-mile-per-hour-plus top speed for this concept. And yes, we're thinking this is a concept. Kick the exposure way up with Photoshop and you can see that the side mirrors are too slim to actually function as normal mirrors – they're almost certainly cameras. Other details? Whatever Mercedes calls its new Maybach, it's going to be huge. According to the caption accompanying the teaser, this car is six meters (19.6 feet) long – that's over three feet longer than an S-Class Coupe and nearly four feet longer than a Bentley Continental GT. Like we said, it's enormous. And that's about all we know. Mercedes dropped this teaser out of the blue, nearly two months before the auto show season kicks off in Paris. It's possible the company could continue to tease out a new Maybach concept until early October, but more likely, we'll see an online debut ahead of the Paris show. Stay tuned. Mercedes CLA facelift spotted in Germany
Tue, Oct 6 2015It's only been a couple of years since Mercedes launched the CLA-Class, but it appears the German automaker is already preparing mild revisions for the compact four-door. Spotted undergoing testing at the company's R&D center in Sindelfingen, Germany, this disguised prototype is likely packing many of the updates that were recently applied to the A-Class hatchback with which the CLA shares most of its underpinnings. As you can see, the front end is camouflaged to disguise the shape of a new grille, bumper, and headlights. Expect similar revisions to be applied to the back as well. Don't expect any drastic mechanical changes in most of the models, which will surely cut the svelte model's fuel consumption and carbon emissions incrementally. We can likely look forward to the arrival of the new AMG version that will hopefully pack the revised 2.0-liter turbo four that produces 381 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque in the updated Mercedes-AMG A45 – a not-insignificant boost of 36 hp and 18 lb-ft over the existing version. Mercedes won't pass up the opportunity to update the interior with new trim and equipment. That should mean a bigger infotainment screen, a new instrument cluster, and even more comfortable seats. Look for all this and more when the revised CLA arrives sometime next year, likely as a 2017 model. Related Video:
