Mercedes claims naming rights for Atlanta Falcons new stadium

Sun, Aug 23 2015

Mercedes-Benz signed a ten-year deal for naming rights to the Louisiana Superdome NFL stadium in 2011. If reports streaming out of Atlanta, Georgia are true, come 2017 Mercedes will have its name on two stadiums in the NFC South Conference because it took up naming rights for the new home being built for the Atlanta Falcons NFL team. The Sports Business Journal reported that the $1.4-billion stadium will open in two years, before the start of the 2017-2018 NFL season. Mercedes transferred its US headquarters from New Jersey to Atlanta earlier this year and is working out of temporary offices; its permanent space is scheduled to be ready around the same time as the stadium. The facility will also be home to the Atlanta United FC Major League Soccer club, and the 2020 NCAA Men's Final Four. If there is a point of common interest between the sports team and the carmaker beyond being really rich neighbors, the facility designed by HOK will be full of technology. The overall shape is inspired by the wings of a falcon, and the eight translucent panels at the top that can open and close in less than eight minutes are inspired by the Pantheon in Rome. The tiered bowl structure inside allows capacity to be expanded up to 83,000 or shrunk with mechanized curtains for MLS games and intimate events, and the five-story tall, 360-degree Halo Board will be the largest video board in the world. Neither Mercedes nor the Falcons organization would comment on the news. An announcement is expected Monday. Formula 1 seeking independent engine supplier

Mon, Oct 26 2015

Formula 1 could get a new engine supplier in the near future, if Bernie Ecclestone and the independent teams gets their way. According to Autosport, the FIA is soon to open the contract up for bids, and there are already several manufacturers that have expressed interest. Currently Mercedes, Ferrari, Renault, and Honda supply engines – both to their own premier teams (Red Bull and McLaren for the latter two) but also to other teams like Williams, Sauber, and Toro Rosso. Because the new turbocharged V6 hybrid power units cost those four suppliers so much to develop, they're charging their customer teams big bucks – around $20-30 million per season – to provide the engines. These costs are much higher than the $10 million or so it used to cost to purchase a V8 engine under the previous regulations. Ecclestone figures it's time to bring in another supplier who will not run their own team and not play favorites, but will supply engines to private teams at a lower cost. There are already a number of potential suppliers under consideration. One of them is said to be Cosworth, which has a long history in the series stretching back to 1963. The British firm stepped back between 2007 and 2009, returned in 2010, and dropped out again after 2013. The development could be of particular benefit to Red Bull, which has been unable to find an engine supplier and could be forced out of the series as a result. The team has long been powered by Renault, but that relationship has grown sour. And the other three engine manufacturers have not been forthcoming in offering an alternative arrangement for the team. 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series [w/video]

Wed, 13 Mar 2013

Now Even Sharper Than The Razor's Edge
There have been five Black Series models since the Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG Black Series introduced itself to European audiences in 2006. Following that, the Black Series club has hosted appearances by the 2008 CLK63 AMG Black Series, the 2009 SL65 AMG Black Series and last year's 2013 C63 AMG Black Series. The sixth member of the group is one we would have thought already was a Black Series car in its standard guise. Right out of the box, the SLS AMG is loud, frenetic, cozy, boisterous and frightfully easy to oversteer. How much more Black did it need to get?
Quite a bit so, apparently. The SLS AMG Black Series has lost weight, gained power and been refitted with upgrades and aero bits from front to rear. If you liked the way it looked before, you'll probably be an even bigger fan of this one. If you thought it looked ungainly, well, this one should stay even further away from pageants. Regardless of where you come down this is the best SLS AMG variant we've driven.
