Up for auction is my very original 1976 450 SL convertible with the factory hard top. This car is all original except the stereo which was replaced by the previous owner. The paint, trim, interior, and hard top are all original and show the patina of an unrestored car. This car was sold new by Dyer and Beck Mercedes in Columbia SC and has been kept in the Carolinas its entire life. I believe I am the third owner of this car and I have all the orignal paperwork including all manuals and the original owner's engraved dash placard. I also have the orignal spare(with the orignal Michelin Tire), the original tool kit, and orignal hub caps. The paint color is Astral Silver Metallic, which was a $416 option in 1976, and is original. There is some fading and checking but it's only original once. The interior is in fair condition and shows typical wear on seats, piping, dash, and console. The floor pans, door jambs. and kinder seat are rust free. The trunk pan however will need to be replaced. The motor is a little cold natured but runs good once warmed up. The transmission works well and shifts like it should. Brakes also work well. I have confirmed with Mercedes Benz Northlake in Huntersville NC that this vehicle is eligible for the front sub frame recall. You're more than welcome to call with the vin to verify. This car is a project car but is a fantastic example if you want a solid survivor or restoration project. Leno has hundreds of vehicles at his disposal, but the real value of it all is at least as much about quality as it is quantity. Take this gem, for example. Sure, it's a little worse for wear, but it's got a nice patina to it – and it's a work in progress. One look is all it takes to know exactly what it is: a classic Mercedes-Benz 300SL, complete with Gullwing doors. "The McLaren F1 of its day," Jay calls it, and with good reason.
