You are looking at a beautiful, lovingly cared for 1988 Mercedes 560SL roadster that has been in my family since new.  My uncle bought this car for my aunt in January of 1988 at Silver Star AG in Thousand Oaks, CA.  I have owned it from September of 2003.  It had 24,810 miles on it when I bought it from my cousin.  It now has a tick over 50,000, and I have thoroughly enjoyed every mile!

There is nothing better than a sunny spring day with the top down in this car.  The power from the 5.6 liter V-8 is just incredible...it pulls like a freight train.  I have driven it to Miami, North Carolina, Oklahoma and various day trips and have never had one problem with it.  Of course, at 50,000 miles it's just getting started.

It's color is Anthracite grey, and the interior is grey leather.  The soft top, which is in near perfect condition, is black.  The hardtop is Anthracite grey.

I switched it to Mobil 1 when I bought it and have religiously changed the oil every 5,000 miles since.  It is not a garage queen, I have enjoyed driving it and so will you.  Accordingly. although there is no rust, there are a couple of minor cosmetic items you need to be aware of.  It has a couple of minor door dings that a ding doctor can easily take care of.  There are some scratches around the pin hole where both tops connect in the back.  There are the usual minor scuff marks on the corners of the front bumper.  There is a rock chip in the windshield.  And the drivers seat has some minor wear on the left bolster, again very typical and not through the leather at all.  All in all, excellent condition for a 25 year old car.

I am also including a windblocker (see photos) that clips in and out in seconds, and adds about four weeks of convertible season in the spring and fall.  It fits in a bag in the trunk when not in use.  I also have a quick disconnect on the battery for winter storage.

I have changed out the radio but the CD player doesn't work.  I have seen the old Becker radios on Ebay if you want to restore it to original.  I have all the books, records and keys.

It spent it's first twelve years garaged in California.  Since coming to Ohio, it has always been garaged and never out in the winter.  The A/C worked when I put it away for the winter but may need a charge in the spring.  My reserve is commensurate with the mileage and condition.

Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4-Door and Fiat 124 Spider Abarth | Autoblog Podcast #596

Fri, Sep 27 2019

In this week's Autoblog Podcast, Editor-in-Chief Greg Migliore is joined by Senior Editor, Green, John Beltz Snyder and Associate Editor Joel Stocksdale. This week, they focus on the cars they're driving, starting with the hardcore, four-door Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S. Then they move on to the aging Lexus GX 460 and the plucky Fiat 124 Spider Abarth. They discuss the practical-yet-luxurious Lincoln Nautilus, as well as the state of Lincoln as a whole (did you hear it just got a new design boss?). Finally, they help pick a modern vehicle for someone with a hankering for the look of the classic Ford Bronco. Mercedes rules out hybrid supercar, promises SLS successor

Sat, 16 Mar 2013

The recent Geneva Motor Show was a festival of hypercars, with the presence of not one, but three over-the-top debuts: the Lamborghini Veneno, McLaren P1 and Ferrari LeFerrari. The latter two have hitched their carbon fiber bumpers to the electrification bandwagon by using hybrid-electric powertrains not entirely unlike the propulsion systems we've come to know in cars like the Toyota Prius and Chevrolet Volt. Does that mean the flow of electrons up the four-wheeled food chain will eventually consume our hallowed supercars? Not if AMG has anything to say about it.
AMG Director of Vehicle Development Tobias Moers recently confirmed that not only will there be a successor to the Mercedes-Benz performance division's SLS AMG, he notes that its internal combustion engine will most definitely not be sharing living quarters with an electric drivetrain. Instead, AMG plans to focus on further pushing the power and efficiency envelope of the internal combustion engine and advancing the use of lightweight materials to achieve their goals. The first example of this effort can be seen in the new SLS AMG Black Series that incorporates many weight-saving techniques to shed some 154 pounds from the SLS AMG GT (above), which itself is lighter than the standard SLS AMG.
Furthermore, Moers remarks that his company is happy to leave the hypercar segment to companies like Ferrari and McLaren. He admits that, "Ferrari in the hyper-car segment is still a different brand than AMG. We have to be honest..." So rather than taking the SLS further upmarket to do battle with bulls and stallions, Moers hinted that the next-generation SLS may be joined by another performance model that fits neatly between itself and the C63 AMG.

Automakers' sound systems: Crank it, don't yank it

Thu, Jun 21 2018

Years ago, one of the first things most music lovers did after buying a new vehicle was drive to an aftermarket stereo shop to get the crappy stock components swapped for better gear. And you'd typically get not only better sound but also more bang (and boom) for your buck. But in the past decade or so, the overall quality of OEM audio has dramatically increased, while car electronics became more complex, removing the incentive for most new vehicle owners — and all but the most hardcore DIYer — to start from scratch. In 2010, I did a comparison of the average costs for OEM electronics vs. similar offerings from the aftermarket, and back then automakers' stock premium systems were by far the best bargain — and are probably an even better value now. The premium 14-speaker, 1,200-watt JBL system in the all-new 2019 Toyota Avalon is a prime example of this trend. It's standard on the top two Limited and Touring trims and is available as a $680 audio upgrade on the XLE and XSE. I doubt you can even buy 14 speakers and 1,200 watts of amplification from the aftermarket for 700 bucks, much less have it all installed. And because the system is bundled with Toyota's Entune infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and a surround-view camera, removing the head unit means you would likely lose these features. Another advantage of OEMs and their audio partners is they can design the car around the audio system. In the past, automakers would typically place speakers where convenient for packaging, not for optimal sound reproduction, and audio engineers were forced to compromise. But as with the Avalon's premium JBL audio system, this is starting to change. At a recent behind-the-scenes peek for media into the process of developing the system, Toyota and Harman engineers delved into the minutia of sealing the inner panel of the front doors to create an enclosure for 6x8-inch woofers, making space in the pillars for JBL horn tweeters and extensively measuring the acoustic properties of the interior to tune the sound to the space. I'm met some creative and skilled car stereo installers, but none with a degree in psychoacoustics. The system is also the first to feature Quantum Logic Surround that creates a multi-channel listening experience from two-channel sources. And it includes Harman's Clari-Fi processing that "rebuilds key details lost" in compressed audio formats used by streaming music services and MP3s.
