Lamborghini beats the odds, sets delivery record in 2021

Wed, Jan 12 2022

Lamborghini is one of the luxury carmakers that reported exceptionally strong sales in 2021 in spite of an ongoing global pandemic and a crippling chip shortage. Like Rolls-Royce and sister company Bentley, the Italian firm beat the odds by setting an all-time delivery record. Annual deliveries totaled 8,405 units, an increase of 13% over 2020. Lamborghini's biggest market remains the United States, where deliveries jumped by 11% to 2,472 units in 2021. Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao are lumped into second place, and deliveries there skyrocketed by 55% to 935 sales. Germany and, somewhat surprisingly, the United Kingdom are in third and fourth place, respectively. Deliveries in Germany rose by 16% to 706 and in England by 9% to 564. Italy, where regulations have historically (and ironically) been hostile to cars with large-displacement engines, likes Lamborghini's breed of bulls as well: 359 deliveries were recorded in 2021, a 3% climb. It shouldn't surprise anyone to learn that the Urus was the best-selling Lamborghini in 2021. The company delivered 5,021 examples, so the SUV accounted for over half of the brand's sales. Second place on the podium is occupied by the Huracan, with 2,586 deliveries, followed by the Aventador, with 798 delivered units. While these numbers might sound insignificant in the grand scheme of things, putting them into context tells a different story. Lamborghini remains small, but it used to be a lot smaller: It built precisely 1,999 examples of the Countach during a production run that stretched 17 years. It made more units of the Aventador (pictured) in 2021 than of the Miura between 1966 and 1973. Another interesting point is that Lamborghini's total for 2021 seemingly only includes delivered units. The company left out the cars it sold but hasn't delivered yet, like the 112 planned units of the born-again Countach. The coupe was sold out before it was shown to the public. Lamborghini hopes to keep the momentum going, and company boss Stephan Winkelmann revealed that almost all of 2022's production capacity is already spoken for. The company also plans to unveil four new cars in 2022, including the Aventador's mysterious successor. Related video: This content is hosted by a third party. 1998 Lamborghini Diablo SV Roadster, a unicorn bull, heads to auction

Wed, Dec 13 2023

Lamborghini made only two Diablo SV Roadsters, and RM Sotheby's is putting this one up for sealed auction running December 13-15. It's not only a rarity, it's a throwback to a time just 23 years ago that people who were there have to make an effort to remember. A time when Lamborghinis barely sold; Chrysler put the Lamborghini Diablo on the market in 1990, Audi took it off the market in 2001, Lambocars puts the entire Diablo run over those 11 years at around 2,500 cars including prototypes and factory specials. Today's Lamborghini moved more than double that number in the first half of this year. The products back then also weren't all that good; yes you could enjoy them, but you were going to sweat and work for it, and a yellow example was driven only by a tycoon or the loosest of cannons. This SV Roadster in Giallo over Nero "Torpedo" Alcantara with yellow piping has undoubtedly seen more pearls clutched than Oyster Bay.  In 1995, just after Chrysler sold the Italian outfit, Lamborghini launched the Diablo VT Roadster, a convertible version of the all-wheel-drive Diablo VT, and the Super Veloce (SV) Coupe, a pared-back rear-driver with more power from the 5.7-liter V12 than in the standard Diablo VT. The new Malaysian and Indonesian owners wanted to lure more American buyers, so they funded development of an SV Roadster to be a lighter, lither RWD version of the AWD VT Roadster. Three years later, a Pearl Orange SV Roadster show car went on display at the Geneva Motor Show in 1998. U.S. dealers wanted the car. However, the Malaysian and Indonesian owners sold Lamborghini to Audi the same year, and Audi canceled all rear-wheel-drive projects. A Milanese Lamborghini dealer asked Lamborghini's CEO to make one more example; the CEO agreed. Having created market demand then stiff-armed it, Lamborghini dealers and distributors in various regions removed the AWD system from some VT Roadsters to create something like an SV Roadster. However, the SV Roadster show car and the example for the Milanese dealer are the only two factory-official SV Roadsters in existence.  This one's been in the hands of four European collectors and shows 42,842 kilometers (26,621 miles) on the odo. Its V12 makes 530 horsepower and 446 pound-feet of torque. Lots of spendy options on this one, including exposed carbon fiber for the roof and intake blades, the optional rear wing also in exposed carbon fiber, the front suspension lift system, and the sports exhaust.

Lamborghini Urus S adds Performante power and new styling

Thu, Sep 29 2022

The Lamborghini Urus just got a new performance variant in the Performante, but now the standard Urus is going through a mid-cycle upgrade of sorts and being renamed the Urus S. So, for the time being there won’t be any Urus models beyond the S and Performante. The Urus S is being treated to the same power upgrade and powertrain calibration as the Performante. That means itÂ’ll have the more potent 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that produces 657 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque — that is 16 ponies more than the base Urus itÂ’s replacing. The 0-62 mph time lags behind that of the PerformanteÂ’s by a couple tenths at 3.5 seconds. However, thatÂ’s 0.1 second quicker than the old Urus. The S gets a re-tuned exhaust system that Lamborghini says is “more distinct” at startup and has a “sharper note” in each drive mode. And speaking of drive modes, you get seven in the Urus, including four on-road modes and three off-road modes for any possible scenario. What the Urus S doesnÂ’t get from the Performante is that modelÂ’s fixed suspension. Instead, Lamborghini carries over its air suspension from the pre-refresh Urus that allows for a wider breadth of use cases than the singular-minded Performante. A number of minor design updates give the Urus S a fresh look. It gets a new front bumper and a new matte black-painted stainless steel front skid plate. The hood is now made of carbon fiber and has matte black-painted air vents, and a new optional carbon fiber roof brings even more sportiness to the table. Lamborghini says its new rear bumper design is meant to make the car look more “streamlined and elegant.” Plus, the updated exhaust system features a new twin-pipe exhaust exit design. Additional wheel options are available in 21-inch, 22-inch and 23-inch flavors. More customization options abound, too, as Lamborghini says itÂ’s greatly expanded its options list of colors, trims, wheels, style packages and “special details.” The same can be said for interior customization, as the Urus S offers all new colors and trims. The Urus S is set to start at ˆ195,538, but U.S. pricing wasnÂ’t provided at reveal time. Expect it to arrive soon and be sold alongside the Performante model here in America.
