2019 Hyundai Kona gets standard safety tech, as prices creep up

The 2019 Hyundai Kona is marking its second year on the market with a few upgrades to sweeten the funky subcompact crossover. The most significant change is the addition of new standard safety equipment. Every trim level from the base SE to the ultimate, well, Ultimate, get automatic emergency braking and collision warning, lane-departure assist and driver attention warning. All of these features were only available on the Ultimate trim level last year. There are a few other small changes here and there. Hyundai is eliminating the silver with black roof color option, but adding a new color called Sunset Orange. The 12-volt power outlet up front goes away on all models in favor of dual USB charging ports. The Infinity upgraded sound system and Hyundai BlueLink connectivity software are now available on the SEL with the SEL Tech Package. The sunroof is also only available as an option on the Ultimate trim, and is included with the SEL Tech Package. View 16 Photos And as is the way with new model years, especially when new equipment is added, prices have crept up a bit for all Kona trim levels. The SE increases by $490, SEL by $650, Limited by $900, and Ultimate by just $100. All-wheel-drive is $100 more expensive, too, at $1,400. Hyundai twin-charged 1.8L GDCI gas engine expected to be more efficient than 2.0L diesel

Despite the growing trend of automakers offering diesel-powered or electrified powertrains, there's still a whole lot that can be done with the good-old gasoline internal combustion engine. And at Hyundai, that's exactly what's being worked on - new gasoline engine technologies that improve both performance and efficiency. During an event at the automaker's technical center in Superior Township, MI on Friday, Hyundai gave Autoblog a glimpse into the future, offering up preliminary details on its new GDCI (Gasoline Direct-Injection Compression) engine - something that will be heading to production soon.
Hyundai's main goal with this GDCI engine is to "achieve diesel levels of fuel efficiency with conventional gasoline," according to Nayan Engineer (yes, his last name is Engineer), one of Hyundai's powertrain gurus. What's more, Engineer says the GDCI engine will offer "equal to better performance than conventional gasoline engines" and will have a "lower system cost [than] diesel engines."
Hyundai expects a 1.8-liter GDCI engine to be more efficient than a comparable 2.0-liter diesel engine with similar performance.

2019 Hyundai Kona Electric range officially EPA-rated at 258 miles

Since the Hyundai Kona Electric was first revealed at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, we've been gradually getting closer to learning the exact electric range for the American car. Finally, after a few estimates, the EPA has released its official rating of 258 miles. That's 8 miles higher than Hyundai's estimate for the U.S. car, given a few months ago. This also puts Hyundai in a strong position against the current crop of electric car competition. While the funky Kona does come up short of the long-range, 310-mile Tesla Model 3, that particular Model 3 costs over $40,000, even with the tax incentive that's not long for this world. The Kona Electric will likely start at a lower price point comparable with the fabled short-range, 220-mile Model 3, which is also 38 miles short of the Kona's range. As such, the Chevy Bolt EV is likely the closest competitor, offering 238 miles, 20 short of the Hyundai, and a price of about $30,000, though that's also with a tax credit that will probably be ending soon for Chevrolet. The 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric goes on sale in California and select other states toward the end of this year. More states will be added early next year. This will be a disadvantage for Hyundai, since both the Model 3 and Bolt EV are currently available nationwide. Related Video:
