Thunderbird

Description

This 1955 Ford Thunderbird is my daily driver.(weather permitting) It is not a show car. Every aspect of this car is daily driver quality and I drive it. There are many up grades to make it more driver friendly. I have most of the parts that were removed and they could be put back on the car.

The car runs and drives fine.  It has a Y block with a 3 speed overdrive transmission, The shifter linkage needs to be adjusted as it sometimes hangs up not a huge problem just an inconvenience. it has a  9 inch rear end with 389 gears. Has plenty of power but still good on gas due to the overdrive.

I believe the drive train is from a 1957. The engine appears to be a 312 based on the heads and intake manifold.

The engine looks to have been rebuilt. It is very clean inside and has compression of 130# on all cylinders.

The following was done in the summer of 2013. New Holley 600 cfm carburetor with electric choke. New Mallory Electronic distributor w/ tach drive, New Mallory coil. Conversion to 12 volt system that includes New 12 volt high torque starter. New GM style 12 volt alternator up grade.

New electric wiper conversion. I replaced the seat relays and motors with a 12 system from 1956 bird.

New Model 29 12 volt battery. New Casco high volume water pump,Thermostat and new 6 blade cooling fan.

The following was done in 2011 & 12 New gas tank , sending unit & gas lines. New Brake Shoes, spring kits, wheel cylinders, steel lines and rubber hoses. New hand brake cables.

4 New shocks (rear are air shocks), and complete front end bushing & ball joint kit. 4 new radial tires. Complete new exhaust system manifold to bumper.

The interior s mostly stock with a power seat. Telescoping after market steering wheel. The clock and radio do not work. I added after market gauges so I really know what is going on. The gas gauge is intermittent and left signal does not cancel. I replaced the steering wheel with a smaller 15” wheel.

Paint and body work was done 2009. Both inner & outer rockers were replaced. All floor braces were replaced. A small section of the floor was replaced. Patches were installed on both rear fender bottoms and dog legs. The body and paint are not perfect but very nice.

Most of the chrome trim is new. The bumpers are driver quality. This is a great car for local shows and cruises not a show car.

Car has an after market soft top. and available  Port hole hard top. The hard top needs to be restored but is all there.

If Purchased with the buy it now option. These additional parts will be included:

1, Complete used power steering set up

2, Used power brake booster. may or may not need reconditioning.

3. Port hole hard top. The hard top needs to be restored but is all there

4, New door panels & Aluminum engine turned panels

5, Good used sill plates

5 Many other misc parts.

This 59 year old Thunderbird is offered for sale as is where is. Actual milage is unknown. The mileage stated is not believed to be accurate. The Instrument cluster has been replaced  The buyer is responsible for all shipping arrangements. I'll help where I can. The car and or title will not leave my procession until I have clear funds. I will accept a $500.00 deposit through pay pal within 48 hrs. and the balance in cash or certified check within 7 days of auction ending. The car will be available for pick up after June 3,2014

Why the Detroit Three should merge their engine operations

Tue, Dec 22 2015

GM and FCA should consider a smaller merger that could still save them billions of dollars, and maybe lure Ford into the deal. Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne would love to see his company merge with General Motors. But GM's board of directors essentially told him to go pound sand. So now what? The boardroom battle started when Mr. Marchionne published a study called Confessions of a Capital Junkie. In it, Sergio detailed the amount of capital the auto industry wastes every year with duplicate investments. And he documented how other industries provide superior returns. He's right, of course. Other industries earn much better returns on their invested capital. And there's a danger that one day the investors will turn their backs on the auto industry and look to other business sectors where they can make more money. But even with powerful arguments Marchionne couldn't convince GM to take over FCA. And while that fight may now be over, GM and FCA should consider a smaller merger that could still save them billions of dollars, and maybe lure Ford into the deal. No doubt this suggestion will send purists into convulsions, but so be it. The Detroit Three should seriously consider merging their powertrain operations, even though that's a sacrilege in an industry that still considers the engine the "heart" of the car. These automakers have built up considerable brand equity in some of their engines. But the vast majority of American car buyers could not tell you what kind of engine they have under the hood. More importantly, most car buyers really don't care what kind of engine or transmission they have as long as it's reliable, durable, and efficient. Combining that production would give the Detroit Three the kind of scale that no one else could match. There are exceptions, of course. Hardcore enthusiasts care deeply about the powertrains in their cars. So do most diesel, plug-in, and hybrid owners. But all of them account for maybe 15 percent of the car-buying public. So that means about 85 percent of car buyers don't care where their engine and transmission came from, just as they don't know or care who supplied the steel, who made the headlamps, or who delivered the seats on a just-in-time basis. It's immaterial to them. And that presents the automakers with an opportunity to achieve a staggering level of manufacturing scale. In the NAFTA market alone, GM, Ford, and FCA will build nearly nine million engines and nine million transmissions this year.

2015 Galpin Ford GTR1

Mon, 25 Aug 2014

Last year in Monterey, we met GTR1 for the first time. Galpin Auto Sports pulled the wraps off its Ford GT-based supercar, powered by a twin-turbocharged 5.4-liter V8 good for a whopping 1,024 horsepower and 739 pound-feet of torque. The thing was totally custom-made and reportedly took some 12,000 man hours to create. And there it sat on the Pebble Beach grass, $1,000,000-plus price tag and all.
This year, the Galpin was back, albeit with one big change. That twin-turbo engine? Gone. In its place, a 5.4-liter V8 with a 4.0-liter Whipple supercharger bolted on, delivering an astonishing 1,058 hp and 992 lb-ft of torque on 110-octane fuel. 0-60? 2.9 seconds. Top speed? Somewhere above 225 miles per hour.
"Some things to keep in mind: no stability control, no traction control," were the only warnings given by Galpin's Brandon Boeckmann before taking me on a quick spin in the supercar. And after having my eyes thrown into the back of my skull a few times, laughing hysterically and trying to regain full use of my hearing after my ear drums being bombarded by the apocalyptic roar behind me, Brandon pulled over and said it was my turn, if I was ready to take the wheel.

Next Lincoln Navigator to drop V8 in favor of V6, but Ford Expedition might get both

Tue, 12 Mar 2013

A great many buyers fled from full-size body-on-frame SUVs to car-based crossovers in large measure to save fuel. But that doesn't mean there's still not a buying audience for more traditional truck-based utility vehicles, and those consumers doubtlessly wouldn't mind saving some dollars at the pump, too. According to Motor Trend, those shoppers might be in luck.
That's because the magazine has confirmed that Ford isn't walking away from the full-size SUV segment, and it's poised to do something about its offerings' economy ratings, too. According to MT, global Lincoln director Matt VanDyke has hinted that the next Navigator may drop two cylinders and go with a V6 model - the current model gets just 14 miles per gallon in the city and 20 on the highway from its 5.4-liter V8. The obvious fitment would be Ford's 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6, an engine that has spread like kudzu throughout the rest of the Blue Oval's large vehicle lineup.
Downsized turbocharged engines like Ford's EcoBoost franchise have come under fire as of late for not delivering their EPA fuel economy ratings, but their benefits extend beyond consumption - the 3.5L offers superior power and a better torque curve than the naturally aspirated V8. MT also suggests that Ford's 3.7-liter V6 could form the base engine for the next Navi - it has similar horsepower but a lot less torque than the current 5.4L. That may be less of a problem with the next generation tipped to go on a diet, which could level the playing field somewhat.
