I purchased VIN 99T456622 1936 COMMERCIAL in June, 2002 from a very old guy named Bob Stark in the San Fernando Valley. The town name is Receda which is a suburb of Los Angeles.

The truck frame, fenders, bed, glass, etc was in quite bad shape. The front right cab corner was caved in, but other than that the cab, doors, and hood sides looked pretty darn good. Almost every part on the old Ford pickups is available from an assortment of reproduction parts houses. One of the things other than the styling of the ‘35 and ‘36 Ford pickups that keeps the desire and price up is that the cabs, doors, and hood sides are not available from reproduction sources. The 1936 Ford pickup was the last production year for the “heart” shaped grill. 1935 was the last car. The parts house that I used was MAC’s Antique Auto Parts in Lockport, NY.

Bob told me that in 1933 the California Legislature passed the Central Valley Act which would bring water to the Central Valley and to the Bay Area. But in the midst of the Great Depression, revenue bonds were unmarketable so no funding could be found to begin construction of the Central Valley Project. The federal government took over the CVP as a public works project to provide jobs and its construction began in 1935. Bob said that the ‘36 pickup was part of the original fleet purchased for use to build the CVP. This bit of history, and that the pickup had never left the Central Valley in all of that time, and of course the final agreed upon price was the beginnings of the resto-rod that I would build in California style. Resto-rod is a term given to a street rod where the vehicle resembles the original stance. In this case, the body is as original. The solid steel wheels resemble the 1950’s street rod. The uncut body sits about 5 inches lower than the original pickup did with high wire wheels and linkage brakes.

The ’36 is used on a regular basis. It has never been used as a daily driver, but that is how it was built. The project was finished in 2003 and currently has 4,700 miles on. It comes with a photo build book, all of the build receipts, and a quality dust cover. The complete pickup weighs in at about 2,200 pounds. With 330 horse power that is less than 7 pounds per horse power.

The ’36 is nicely built. It is dependable and useful. It hauls ass. I am very proud of it. Circumstances force sale.

Crowdsource funding push on to save historic Ford buildings

Thu, 22 Aug 2013

Detroit has no shortage of old, abandoned buildings, both within the city and in the surrounding communities. Few, though, have the historical significance of the old Ford Highland Park facility. Home to the very first moving assembly line, Highland Park was designed by the legendary Albert Kahn, and was one of the homes of the Model T.
Now, the Woodward Avenue Action Association is attempting to buy both the 40,000-square-foot admin building, which is located off the historic Woodward Avenue, and an 8,000-square-foot garage. The WAAA's goal is to convert the buildings into an automotive heritage center. The Detroit News spoke to the interim director of the WAAA, Deborah Schutt, who commented, "[Metro Detroit has] not been very good at telling our own story. So we've decided, let's pull everything together and tell our story."
The WAAA made an offer of $550,000 to buy the two buildings, and has $400,000 from the Michigan Department of Transportation and another $15,000 from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. It's trying to raise a further $125,000 through crowd-sourcing, starting a campaign called "Five Dollars A Day," after old Hank Ford's $5-per-day wage for line workers.

40+ cars that barely avoid the gas guzzler tax

Thu, 24 Jul 2014

The Gas Guzzler schedule, with mpg ratings and charges that haven't changed since 1991, lays out which fuel-swillers owe what to Uncle Sam.
I started thinking about the "Gas Guzzler Tax" - considerably less well known as The Energy Tax Act of 1978 - when I was driving Dodge's new Challenger SRT Hellcat last week. Unsurprisingly for a car that can burn 1.5 gallons of gas per minute at max tilt, theoretically able to empty a full tank of premium in about 13 minutes, the Hellcat will be subject to the Gas Guzzler Tax schedule when it goes on sale.

How tariffs in China could cause a meltdown in the American South

Sun, Aug 25 2019

While BMW is clearly a German company, the crossovers that are exceedingly important to it are actually made in Spartanburg, South Carolina. And more than that, the Spartanburg plant (physically located in the town of Greer) is where the corporate know-how and capability for those vehicles is concentrated. These are the vehicles – specifically, the BMW X3, X4, X5, X6, X7 – that drove record growth for the company in 2018, according to BMW. But whatÂ’s most notable about BMW Group Plant Spartanburg, given current events, is that according to the U.S. Department of Commerce it was the largest automotive exporter by value for the fifth year running in 2018. ThatÂ’s worth emphasizing: largest automotive exporter by value. Not GM. Not Ford. BMW. And where might one assume that more than a few of those X vehicles are shipped to? China. Some 360 miles southwest of Spartanburg is Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, Inc., in in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. It started building vehicles in 1997. Since then, Daimler AG has invested in excess of $5.5 billion in the facility. It manufactures the crossover now known as the GLE, formerly the ML-Class. It also makes the GLE coupe and GLS. Daimler describes the Tuscaloosa facility as “the traditional home of SUV production” for those vehicles. When it reported its global 2018 sales, Daimler noted that on a global basis SUVs account “for more than a third of all Mercedes-Benz sales.” According to the Chinese finance ministry, on December 15th the Chinese government will impose a 25% tariff on automobiles (and a 5% tariff on auto parts) from the U.S. Certainly this is going to have a direct effect on the sales of vehicles that are manufactured in the U.S. and exported to China. BMW and Mercedes are going to take it on the chin for the vehicles that they make in plants that they invested in so heavily in the U.S. Which could potentially mean that people in places like Greer, South Carolina, and Vance, Alabama, are going to find themselves in the crosshairs of the combatants. Soo too could Lincoln, which produces vehicles in places like Louisville, Kentucky (Navigator), Chicago, Illinois (Aviator) and Flat Rock, Michigan (Continental). Although the Tesla Gigafactory 3 is rapidly nearing completion in Shanghai, it is worth noting that vehicles built in Fremont, California, are being sold in China in numbers that donÂ’t make Musk unhappy.
