2016 Ford F-150 gets new Limited model
Tue, Jul 21 2015The average price paid for a full-size pickup this year is $42,429. Ram is right at that mark, with an average price of $42,256, the Chevrolet Silverado is below it, at $38,384, and the Ford F-150 is above, at $46,573. That average transaction price is thirty percent higher than it was six years ago, and that F-150 price is eight percent higher than one year ago. We can thank that escalation for the arrival of the new F-150 Limited, a truck that Ford says responds to the "growing needs of discerning truck customers interested in exclusivity, capability and craftsmanship." Reuters went further, saying customers want "trucks that could substitute for a higher end German sedan." Billed as "the most advanced, luxurious F-150 ever," everything has been thrown at the standard features list. Buyers will get the luxury modifiers we expect from Europeans, like Mojave leather throughout, climate-controlled, massaging front seats, heated rear seats, and fiddleback eucalyptus wood. Driver assistance systems are legion, including a 360-degree camera system, adaptive cruise control, active park assist, a remote tailgate release, and SYNC3. Ford's new Pro Trailer Backup Assist will be an option. As if that won't be enough to tell it from the less luxurious models, the Limited sits on unique 22-inch wheels, the word "Limited" is written on the hood, the VIN is laser engraved in a plaque in the armrest, and the grille, tailgate, and door handles get a satin chrome finish among other changes. Only four exterior colors make the palette: Shadow Black, Magnetic, Blue Jeans and White Platinum Metallic tri-coat. The sole engine offered is the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 with 365 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. We've been talking about luxury trucks for years now, and Ford's competition is in the game, too - Chevy has its Silverado High Country, Ram its Laramie Limited. This new F-150 Limited, however, raises all bets. It will go on sale this winter at an as-yet-unknown price, but since the current top-of-the-line Platinum starts at $51,585, we have a feeling that getting a Limited out the door under $60K will be near impossible. NHTSA investigating Ford's solution to May 2014 power steering recall
Tue, Apr 7 2015The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating a complaint that Ford's response to a May 2014 recall of the 2008 to 2011 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner doesn't quite go far enough to solve a troubling power-steering problem. Roughly a year ago, Ford recalled nearly a million vehicles after it was found that a problem with the torque sensor's communication with the power steering control module could cut steering assistance for drivers. While manual steering would still be available, the problem was enough to ask drivers to report in to have the PSCM inspected, and if necessary, replaced (along with the torque sensor, or in dramatic cases, the entire steering column). That would only happen, though, if trouble codes were being thrown. If there weren't any problems, dealers were told to simply update the PSCM's software so that any issues between it and the torque sensor would simply throw a visual and audio warning – power steering would still be maintained. The petitioner claimed that following the recall work, he still experienced a problem with the torque sensor. According to NHTSA, a claim was made that Ford didn't go far enough in its solution to the problem, and that "the software update itself may in fact cause further issues with the affected vehicle's power steering, causing it to fail, and ultimately requiring replacement of the torque sensor or entire steering column." The petition was filed in early February and is now officially being looked into by NHTSA.
Ford finds flex-fuel engine design plays big role in emissions output
Mon, Jan 6 2014How bad is ethanol for your engine? There's been a lot of debate on this issue as the US considers upping the biofuel content in the national gasoline supply from 10 percent (E10) to 15 percent (E15). The ethanol industry and some scientists say higher ethanol blends show no "meaningful differences" in new engines while the oil industry says ethanol creates health risks. Researchers working at the Ford Research and Innovation Center decided to take a closer look at how a wide range of gas-ethanol blends - E0, E10, E20, E30, E40, E55 and E80 - affected the emissions coming out of a flex-fuel 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis. To see the full report, printed in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, requires payment, but there is an abstract and Green Car Congress has some more details. The gist is that, "with increasing ethanol content in the fuel, the tailpipe emissions of ethanol, acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, methane, and ammonia increased." At least NOx and NMHC emissions decreased. The researchers say that the effects are due to the fuel and "are expected for all FFVs," but that the way that a manufacturer calibrates the engine will affect NOx, THC, and NMOG emissions. It's this last bit that's important, since the researchers found, "Higher ethanol content in gasoline affects several fundamental fuel properties that can impact emissions. ... These changes can have positive or negative effects that can depend on engine design, hardware, and control strategy. In addition to direct emissions impacts, higher ethanol content fuel can also provide more efficient combustion and overall engine operation under part-load conditions and under knock-limited higher-load conditions." So, as we head towards more ethanol in our fuel supply (maybe), manufacturers are going to need to learn how to burn it most efficiently.
