The 38' Special

Up for bid today is a 1938 Ford truck project that I have been working on for a few years now. I wanted to build a traditional Drag Racer/Gasser like they would have built in the late 50s - early 60s. I started gathering parts and building the truck and have a great start for somebody who is into the nostalgia Drag race look.

Chassis-

The truck is built on a 37 Ford truck frame with a 39-40 Ford front axle and brakes with split wishbones up front and a mid 60s Pontiac Posi-trac rear axle and ladder bars in the rear. Both front and rear axles have the old school transverse leaf springs, still needs shocks mounted front and rear. The rear axle is massive and has huge 12 inch brakes; a 15 inch wheel barely fits over them. It is also a posi unit as it has the tag on the filler plug.

The frame still needs some finish work; I would probably box the inner frame rails or at least reinforce them where the wishbones and steering box mounts for added strength.

Brake components are all there, front and rear, but need gone through. I am including a frame mount brake pedal and an under dash setup that could work also.

Wheels up front are 15 inch early Ford with New Coker bias ply - Rear wheels are 15inch GM steel with Vintage NOS Foremost AFX Drag slicks.

Motor/Trans-

The motor is a really nice 1950 Olds 303 that we took apart and it was really nice inside, looked like a low mileage motor or had been rebuilt before it was parked. We put in all new gaskets, new timing chain, new water pump, took the heads clear apart and lapped the valves and put in new valve seals. Then we added a vintage 3 carb Edelbrock manifold, new plug wires and test ran the motor on an engine stand and it ran great! It is only running off the center carb, it will need linkage and all that. The valve covers on this motor are white porcelain coated which is really cool, not sure if that was a factory thing or if somebody had it done, but I have never seen that before.

Also comes with custom built headers that need a little finish welding.

The transmission setup is a conversion in progress going from automatic to manual.  I found a Cadillac manual bellhousing which bolts right up to the Olds motor and I have a vintage Schaffer Aluminum flywheel but it still needs some work to get everything to work together, we machined a little off the bellhousing but it is still a little too deep and will require a longer throwout bearing or you can save yourself the trouble and just buy the aftermarket bellhousing from Bendetson and be done with it. I think it's about 400 bucks, then you can bolt any Chevy manual trannny on you want. Currently we have a 57 Chev manual three speed on it.

Body-

The cab is a 38 Ford that has been chopped and we also channeled the floor a couple inches so it sits down over the frame a bit more. Perimeter of cab floor has been reinforced with box tubing but the sheet metal work still needs done. The cab itself is really pretty decent, just a little rust coming through on the bottom of the passenger door. We have the glove box door and back window garnish molding that needs to be chopped still as well as a really nice windshield frame that will need cut down as well.

Truck also comes with a nice 36 Ford truck grille and an original 38 Ford truck hood - what I wanted to do was fit the front of the 38 Ford hood to the 36 Ford grille and cut a hole in the hood for the air cleaners to poke through. It would look bitchin' if you wanted a hood on it. A guy would still need to figure out a core support/radiator to mount the grille to, might even be able to do a stock type radiator as well and mount the grille that way.

The bed is a 36 I believe, we shortened it about 8 inches, has the original Ford script tailgate and hinges.

Truck comes with a bunch of other vintage parts as well including a full set of vintage Sun Gauges with a Stewart Warner speedo, a vintage Fenton fuel block, 12 volt Generator, new 12 volt voltage regulator, 36 Chev truck steering wheel, Old Ford headlights and a bunch of other stuff, see pictures.

So if you are looking for a traditional Hot rod project, here it is - still needs a lot of work such as floors, wiring and all that, but an awesome start that looks right and has a lot of Vintage hard to find parts.

Truck is Titled as a 37 Ford truck and comes with a clear Washington state title. See pictures and Video and feel free to ask questions.

Buyer responsible for shipping/transport arrangements, we will help in any way we can - Payment of Cash in person or Cashiers check within 5 days of sale. Sold as is

Happy Bidding!

Ford and OMS bring military ride-and-drive program to Hockenheimring

Tue, Jun 9 2015

This post is appearing on Autoblog Military, Autoblog's sub-site dedicated to the vehicles, aircraft and ships of the world's armed forces. It kind of goes without saying, but joining the military means you won't be enjoying quite as much leisure time as members of the civilian world. That said, when a chance to let your hair down does come along, servicemembers usually enjoy some very unique opportunities... like driving a new Ford Mustang and F-150 around Germany's Hockenheimring. Ford and the Overseas Military Sales Corporation, the on-base retailer for the Blue Oval and the same outfit that worked out a raffle program for servicemembers to purchase the limited-edition 50th Anniversary Mustang, put together the ride-and-drive program at Germany's second most famous circuit. The OMS allows military men and women to purchase vehicles for both on-base use and for pickup when they arrive back in the United States. "The Ford Driving Freedom ride-and-drive event is designed to introduce the new 2015 Ford Mustang and F-150 to military personnel who are stationed on US bases across Europe," Ford fleet sales manager Doug Walczak said in the attached statement. "It's the first time such an event has been held overseas." According to Ford, over 300 servicemen and women applied to take part in this pilot program, which was more than double what Ford and OMS had room for. With such an impressive response rate, it's no surprise that similar events could come to other US bases. Scroll down for the official press release from Ford. U.S. Military Personnel Take Ford Mustang, F-150 for a Ride at Hockenheimring Racetrack · Ford and the Overseas Military Sales Corporation host first-ever Ford Driving Freedom ride-and-drive event for U.S. military personnel stationed on bases across Europe · U.S. military personnel got the unique opportunity to drive the Ford F-150 and Ford Mustang on Hockenheimring racetrack in Germany · Ford has worked with Overseas Military Sales Corporation since 1995 to offer Ford and Lincoln vehicles for sale throughout the Americas, as well as in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, as well as on select Navy ships HOCKENHEIMRING, Germany, June 9, 2015 – Members of the U.S. military got the unique opportunity to take a test drive of the Ford F-150 and Mustangtoday at Germany's famed Hockenheimring racetrack.

Mulally confirms he's not leaving Ford for Microsoft

Tue, 07 Jan 2014

In recent months, rumors had been flying about Ford CEO Alan Mulally potentially leaving the company to take a position at Microsoft. Last we heard, Mulally was planning to stick around at Ford through at least 2014, and in an interview today, that bit was confirmed by the CEO himself.
According to the Associated Press, in a report from The Detroit News, Mulally said he will not be leaving Ford for Microsoft, and reiterated that he will remain at the Blue Oval through 2014, if not longer. Mulally has "no plans other than to serve Ford," according to the report.
Mulally did not say whether or not he had been in talks with Microsoft at any point. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has said he plans to leave the software company sometime this year.

Made in America | These cars top the most-American list

Mon, Dec 5 2022

The car with the most American/Canadian content for 2022 is ... cue the drumroll ... the Lincoln Corsair, in both standard gasoline-fueled and plug-in hybrid guise. Both versions of Lincoln's compact luxury crossover earned a score of 86 — due to 72% of its parts coming from one of the two aforementioned countries — in the American University Kogod Business School's annual "Made in America Auto Index." Last year's leader, the 2021 Ford Mustang GT (when equipped with a manual transmission) fell all the way to 22nd place with a 50% rating due to a switch in transmissions sourced from Mexico. In case you're interested, that puts Ford's red-blooded American ponycar below vehicles like the Kia Sorento, Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class SUV and Lexus ES. If you're wondering how an American car that's assembled within the borders of the United States could rank below a model from a Korean, German or Japanese automaker, well, we'll let Kogod explain: "The components of the index are based on research performed by the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor Michigan regarding the economic value of different components of auto manufacturing. For example, the highest ranked cars are made by U.S.-based manufacturers using American engines and transmissions, and with a high AALA percentage of U.S. and Canadian parts." There are 25 total vehicles listed in the Top 10 (there are lots of ties this year). Here's the full list: (1) Lincoln Corsair: 86 (1) Lincoln Corsair PHEV: 86 (2) Tesla Model 3 Long Range: 82.5 (3) Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray: 81 (4) Chevrolet Colorado: 80.5 (5) Jeep Cherokee Latitude 4x4: 80 (5) Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk: 80 (5) Tesla Model 3 Performance: 80 (5) Tesla Model Y: 80 (6) Dodge Durango Citadel: 79.5 (6) Dodge Durango Blacktop AWD: 79.5 (7) Honda Passport Trailsport: 78.5 (8) Ford F-150 2.7L, 3.3L, 5.0L: 77.5 (8) Ford Ranger: 77.5 (8) Ford Bronco automatic: 77.5 (8) Tesla Model S: 77.5 (8) Tesla Model X: 77.5 (9) Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 3.6L: 77 (9) Jeep Grand Cherokee L LTD: 77 (9) Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 3.6L: 77 (9) Chevrolet Camaro automatic: 77 (10) Honda Odyssey: 76 (10) Honda Ridgeline: 76 (10) Honda Pilot: 76 There's a whole long list of reasons for the above scores, with seven criteria that include factory location, headquarters location and where its various bits and pieces come from.
