An argument can be made that the Ford AV8 was the first true hot rod.  Emulating the Lakes and street racers of the late 30s and early 40s,
this little roadster definitely fits the bill.  True to its tradition, it was recently honored with the Joe Mac Memorial Award at the annual
 Antique Nationals in Pomona, CA.

Motivation comes from a fully-balanced, ported, polished, and relieved 1946 59a flathead; 0.060" over with a Merc crank for 266 cu. in.
Timing is handled by a rare and potent Iskenderian 1007 LD (long duration) Track Grind camshaft, the "Impacter".  Fuel and air are
churned by an original pair of 97s and delivered to a rare and original Edelbrock Block Letter manifold.  Firing the mix is a Kurten dual-coil,
dual-point ignition with original Ford coils converted to 12v.  Containing the explosive gasses, is an ultra-rare set of original Edelbrock
Block Letter heads.  Spent fuel exits through custom-made headers and a pair of Smithy's.  Cooling the motor is an original Deuce
radiator rebuilt by the Brassworks, Paso Robles, CA.

Rowing the gears is a '39 Ford box delivering torque to a very rare Culver City Model A quick change (final gear:  3.46), both assembled
by Nick and Ken Smith at Hot Rod Works, Caldwell, ID.

The gennie Ford chassis was TIG welded for strength with further mods made by Derek Bower to improve rigidity.  A modified Ford F1
crossmember and Heim-jointed pedal assembly make for smooth braking and shifting.  Steering is by a rebuilt F1 steering box with
NOS sector shaft and worm gear and original Deuce pitman arm.

Handling the front suspension chores is an original Deuce 4" dropped axle, spindles, wishbone, and spring; rebuilt courtesy of Jay and Joe
Kennedy at the Bomb Factory, Pomona, CA.  Pete and Jake shocks finish the package.

Slowing things down are rebuilt '47 Ford hydraulic brakes with '40 backing plates.

 Rolling stock comes from '39 Ford wide-five hubs and wheels, 16 x 4" front and 16 x 5" rear, wrapped in Firestone 5.50 ribs and 7.50 bias-belts.
NOS '39 Ford standard caps and '40 trim rings complete the look.

Monitoring the motor are rare, curved glass Stewart-Warner gauges:  3 & 1/2" mechanical tach with complete S-W brass-arm tach drive, 2 & 5/8"
oil pressure and water temp gauges.  Completing the interior is a cut-down Glide seat with ultra-cool vintage Beechcraft airplane seat belts.

The body is original Ford steel in PPG black base/clear coat with original Ford Deuce grill shell and insert.  NOS B-L-C 682-J headlamps with
Halogen conversion.  Final detailing by Bill Larzelere, Burbanl, CA and Joe Kennedy.  Chrome and nickel plating by Christensen Plating,
 Vernon, CA.

A $2000, non-refundable deposit is due within 3 days at end of auction.  Total payment is due within 14 days (PayPal, cash,
Cashier's Check).  Successful bidder is responsible for shipping.

Detroit's new fleet of donated police cars have safety issues [w/video]

Wed, 23 Oct 2013

In a show of generosity in mid-August, Detroit's business leaders donated $8 million to the Police Department and Fire Department in order to buy 100 new police vehicles and 23 EMS ambulances. But now officers have discovered - and complained - that the police vehicles have glaring safety issues, Deadline Detroit reports. It is not made clear what models of the fleet vehicles - which include police versions of the Ford Taurus, the Chevrolet Caprice and the Dodge Charger - are affected by the safety issues.
Officers reportedly have complained that the Plexiglass partition separating front-seat officers and back-seat prisoners is easily breached, and that the front passenger seat is installed too close to the dashboard. Prisoners who manage to writhe out of their handcuffs can bend the Plexiglass and reach into the cockpit, and sitting too close to the dashboard can render airbags more dangerous and make officers more vulnerable to injury in a crash.
Mark Diaz, president of the Detroit Police Officers Association, received the complaints and reportedly said the vehicles would get safety updates addressing the issues. But Deadline Detroit reports that it checked some of the offending police cars and, as of the last few days, they hadn't been updated.

Ford Australia reveals updated Territory, Falcon via Twitter

Mon, 28 Jul 2014

Ford may have tied together much of its global lineup under the One Ford campaign, but one market where it still offers unique products is Australia. That will soon draw to a close as well, but before it does, the Blue Oval's Aussie operations are rolling out refreshed versions of its two unique products. For the moment, Ford isn't revealing much in the way of powertrain details, but it has shown off a couple of snaps of the revised products on its in-market Twitter feed.
First up is the new Territory. The SUV is neither based on a front-drive crossover platform nor on a truck frame, but shares its rear-drive underpinnings with the Falcon, taking it a step beyond the Falcon wagon alongside which it sits in Ford's Aussie range. Like the outgoing third-generation SZ Territory, the facelifted version is dominated by a narrow grille and larger front air dam, but further punctuates its big-chinned look with more rugged lower cladding and other metallic inserts that bring its look up to date.
And there's the Falcon, which Ford revealed in XR8 trim just last week and is now presenting in G6E spec. If the XR8 is the performance model, the G6E is the luxury version, swapping in more refined trim like a chrome-slat grille (instead of a black honeycomb), chrome foglamp surrounds, less-aggressive multi-spoke wheels (instead of five-spokes) and a flatter hood (instead of a power bulge). Otherwise, it looks essentially the same as the one we saw last week, its facelift bringing it more in line with the smaller, front-drive Mondeo (which we know here as the Fusion) and other members of the Ford family.

2015 Ford Expedition stays the course, adds EcoBoost power

Tue, 18 Feb 2014

The era of the body-on-frame, fullsize SUV is rapidly vanishing in favor of smaller, unibody crossovers. However, Ford still sees life in the segment with the reveal of the updated 2015 Expedition, now available (solely) with the company's 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6. The new truck will make its public debut at the 2014 DFW Auto Show in Dallas on February 19.
The loss of the previous 5.4-liter V8 in favor of Ford's 3.5-liter, direct-injected, twin-turbocharged V6 engine might rankle some of the Expedition's fans, but Ford claims that the change gives the SUV better fuel economy, more power and increased low-end torque than before. Unfortunately, official engine specifications won't be released until later this year, but Ford says engine output will be similar to the 365 horsepower and 360 pound-feet of torque that this powerplant produces in other applications. The EcoBoost is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, and the SUV now uses electrically assisted power steering, for an even greater fuel economy advantage. Ford claims this also allows for better maneuverability at low speeds and better feel at high speeds.
Exterior styling is basically unchanged for 2015. The front end has the same three-bar chrome grille and headlight design, but the lower air dam gets added chrome and LED lamps. The rear gets more brightwork on the hatch, and there's a chrome-tipped exhaust pipe. As before, Ford is offering the Expedition in two wheelbase lengths - 119 inches and 131 inches. A new, optional, continuously controlled damping system alters suspension settings constantly based on 46 parameters and offers comfort, normal and sport modes (just like the Expedition's sister, the recently refreshed and decidedly less-attractive Lincoln Navigator).
