For sale is my 1957 Fairlane 500 Sunliner convertible project. It runs and stops and can move under its own power but is a long way from being roadworthy.
Drivetrain: The engine is a 1956 292 V8 with a Holley 4000 "Teapot" 4-barrel carburetor and oil-bath air cleaner. The engine has been fully disassembled, cleaned, checked, and reassembled with all new bearings (cam, main, rod) and rings, and of course gaskets and seals. The water pump, distributor, and fuel pump are all new. It runs well and doesn't leak any fluids at all. There are no exhaust pipes so it is loud with open manifolds. The carburetor was rebuilt a long time ago and then stored, and though it is clean and in good condition the accelerator pump responds slowly which causes a hesitation/stumble. A new pump seal should remedy that issue. The fuel tank appears to be rust-free and I have been running the car from it with it installed in the vehicle. The transmission is a 3-speed manual with floor shifter. The car was originally equipped with Fordomatic but the conversion was done long before I acquired it. The clutch disc is new and the parts seem to work all right without any shudder on engagement. I have not tested it extensively. The axle has a 3.10:1 ratio. Only the engine has been overhauled. The brakes do not leak and were probably replaced about 10 years ago, when the previous owner last did any work on the car. They stop the car well enough in my driveway but they should not be considered road-ready. Body: Every panel on this car has rust damage to some degree, except for the trunk lid, which is excellent. The panels are straight but the lowest portions of the car (rockers, floors, quarters, etc) have succumbed to "cancer" and will need to be replaced. Fortunately, replacement panels are sold for all of these rusted areas except the trunk floor and rear underseat area. Any 1957 Ford donor car should be able to supply the trunk floor as well as the front clip, which needs to be replaced as well as it is quite rusty. The x-brace frame is in good condition and should require minimal work to be excellent. The windshield is in good shape; some of the side glass is cracked but once again it can be obtained at reasonable cost. The convertible top frame is fully intact and can be raised and lowered by hand without difficulty. No parts are broken and only the header bow has some rust (not cancerous though). The hydraulics (ram, pump, hoses) are present but not usable. I have 99% of the exterior trim. Overall, this is an advanced project best suited to someone who enjoys metal repair and who can source a good donor '57 Ford to help complete the car, or as a donor for another '57-58 Ford Sunliner project. Soft-top Sunliners are scarcer than the retractable Skyliners and they are only becoming rarer. They are particularly uncommon in project form, so if you are looking to build one your way, this is a great opportunity. I have a NC title in my name. It is titled "inoperable" which means that when it is operable again, a License and Theft Bureau agent will simply need to verify that it is operable (for NC buyers). |

Crowdsource funding push on to save historic Ford buildings
Thu, 22 Aug 2013Detroit has no shortage of old, abandoned buildings, both within the city and in the surrounding communities. Few, though, have the historical significance of the old Ford Highland Park facility. Home to the very first moving assembly line, Highland Park was designed by the legendary Albert Kahn, and was one of the homes of the Model T.
Now, the Woodward Avenue Action Association is attempting to buy both the 40,000-square-foot admin building, which is located off the historic Woodward Avenue, and an 8,000-square-foot garage. The WAAA's goal is to convert the buildings into an automotive heritage center. The Detroit News spoke to the interim director of the WAAA, Deborah Schutt, who commented, "[Metro Detroit has] not been very good at telling our own story. So we've decided, let's pull everything together and tell our story."
The WAAA made an offer of $550,000 to buy the two buildings, and has $400,000 from the Michigan Department of Transportation and another $15,000 from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. It's trying to raise a further $125,000 through crowd-sourcing, starting a campaign called "Five Dollars A Day," after old Hank Ford's $5-per-day wage for line workers.
Shelby GT350R offers first mass-produced carbon fiber wheels
Fri, Jul 10 2015In the world of race engineering, reducing total weight is good, but reducing unsprung weight is flippin' fantastic. That's the reason Ford is pushing the envelope in terms of technology for the Shelby GT350R's wheels. Joining the likes of Koenigsegg in the offering, Ford has teamed with Australian outfit Carbon Revolution to produce the CF rollers en masse for the first time. Destined for the hubs of the new Shelby GT350R, the new hoops weigh just 18 pounds each, versus the 33-lbs weight of a similar aluminum wheel. On top of slashing up to 60 pounds in unsprung weight, there's such a reduction in rotational inertia – 40 percent, versus aluminum wheels – that Ford actually has to recalibrate the magnetic ride control system and springs. Thanks to, we're guessing, scenes of crashed Formula One cars disintegrating and spewing shards of carbon fiber all over the track, Ford seems quite keen to do away with the idea that CF is strong, but brittle. The company conducted extensive shock testing, ramming a wheel into a curb at speed. According to the Blue Oval, the lightweight wheel allowed the suspension to respond so quickly that the impact was "greatly diminished," causing the tester to run the experiment again, thinking there'd been a mistake. After recording brake rotor temperatures of 900 degrees Celsius (over 1,650 degrees Fahrenheit, or well past the point that aluminum or magnesium would melt) during testing, Ford and Carbon Revolution actually redesigned the wheels to "a thermal standard more suitable for motorsports," by adding an "incredibly thin, nearly diamond-hard coating that reliably shields the resin from heat." The same process was used to protect engine turbine blades on the Space Shuttle. While the work by Ford and Carbon Revolution should make GT350R customers excited, the work being done here could have serious implications for performance cars in the future. That's the real takeaway here, and is something that should leave fans of all performance vehicles excited.

Instead of the usual format of discussing a model for about ten minutes and then taking it out for a test drive, this week Leno gives viewers on a tour of over a dozen projects concurrently happening in his stable. The breadth of the vehicles shown and the things being done to them run the entire span of the automotive hobby. At the same time, Jay's shop is working on just a simple restoration of his 1969 Lamborghini Espada (pictured), and at the other side of the building, the team is rebuilding a wood-bodied 1914 Detroit Electric from scratch. He eventually plans to slot a more modern electric drivetrain into it. If bikes are more your interest, there's a freshly completed Brough Superior just waiting for a ride, and if American models are your thing, a Ford Bronco is getting a Coyote V8 installed into it. You have some very specific tastes if you can't watch this clip and start wishing at least one of these vehicles could be in your own garage. Other than the personal projects his mechanics are working on in the shop, Jay gets to have them all, plus plenty more.
