Barrett-Jackson 2014: Michael Schumacher's 1998 Ferrari F300 earns round of applause, $1.7M bid [w/video]

There isn't much in the world that can aurally match the screeching wail of a Formula 1 car at redline. We obviously can't say whether or not the showmanship of starting this 1998 Ferrari F300 in front of the assembled masses at Barrett-Jackson and slowly taking it up to its 18,000-rpm redline had any effect on bidders, but it did, at the very least, result in a round of applause.
This '98 Ferrari F300 was driven 38 times by Michael Schumacher, and there was another round of applause for the driver, who's currently in a medically induced coma and listed in stable condition after a skiing accident. This particular example is number three of nine total built for the '98 season. Power comes from a 3.0-liter V10 engine producing 805 horsepower at 17,500 rpm.

F1 cars will have cockpit protection for the 2018 season

Formula 1's sanctioning body, the FIA, reported that the F1 Strategy Group decided chose the 2018 season to be the first to feature new cockpit technology to protect drivers. The decision was made to allow more time to develop the technology, instead of rushing it into use. The halo design being tested by Ferrari is still the most likely solution that uses a solid ring above and around the cockpit with a central pillar ahead of the driver. The F1 Strategy Group did say that they will be open to any other options that may develop in the coming year. Red Bull has also been developing a system that is closer to a wind-screen. The push to develop new safety technology came after Jules Bianchi's fatal crash with a recovery truck at the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix. His car slipped underneath the back of the truck leaving his head vulnerable in the impact. It is possible a device like the Halo could have prevented this, but in its current, it form wouldn't protect a driver from the sort of loose debris that hit Felipe Massa during qualifying for the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix. Ferrari stock demand exceeding supply

As with the Ferrari cars, so it is with shares in the company's initial public offering: When Ferrari has a limited quantity of something to sell, demand far outstrips supply. Investors told banks weeks ago that bids for the $1 billion in stock – up to 18.89 million shares – would exceed the number of shares available over the entire expected range of $48 to $52. Ten percent of the company is going on the block' Bloomberg reports that the books close on the IPO on Monday at 4:00 pm. The final price will be set on Tuesday, and trading will begin Wednesday under the ticker symbol RACE on the New York Stock Exchange. Piero Ferrari, the son of Enzo Ferrari, will hold onto the ten-percent stake he currently has in the company. Fiat Chrysler will disburse the final 80 percent to its investors sometime in 2016. In combination with spinning Ferrari off from its parent company next year, the share sale is expected to put $4 billion into Fiat Chrysler coffers, which will be used to help fuel the growth of Alfa Romeo, Jeep, and Maserati. Assuming all goes to plan, Bloomberg says Ferrari will be valued at roughly $12 billion, a number $1 billion greater than the valuation Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne put on Ferrari earlier this year and higher than the brand's own internal assessment.
