Hemi V-8 331 c.i. , 2bbl carb. Fluid Torque Drive 4-speed semi-automatic transmission. All original condition with 44,720 original miles. This car is one of those “barn find” originals. It was sold new to a Mrs. Smith in Buffalo, NY. Her husband passed away sometime later and she continued to drive the car sparingly until 1971 when she surrendered the plates. Oil change stickers on the Driver’s door show 37,116 miles on 6/17/69 and another 40,165 on July 13, ?(I would assume 1970). I have a document from NY state showing the plates were voluntarily surrendered 2/22/71. It sat in storage for 37 years until it was sold at an estate auction in 2010. Since then, The brakes and wheel cylinders have been replaced, the gas tank cleaned with new lines installed. The Master cylinder was rebuilt, brake lines installed, carburetor cleaned. A full tuneup was done with new plugs and wires, dual-point distributor refurbished. There is a NY state inspection sticker from 2013. The car passed inspection as all lights, turn signals, speedometer, gauges, horn, wipers are functioning properly. The original 6-volt system is intact. All courtesy lights, and cigar lighters are working. I have not been able to get the gas gauge or the AM radio working. The radio appears to be complete and the speaker component has supposedly been re-built. I believe a tube may need replacing to get it working as it does power up and the dial illuminates. The car has new whitewall radial tires installed. All glass in the car is original. The windows glide up and down effortlessly. The wing windows open and close perfectly. The headliner is virtually as new. The original door rubber seals are supple and near new in appearance. The windlace around the doors and headliner is original but appears as new. There is a small tear in the front bench seat on the passenger side. It was told to me that when the car came out of storage it had the plastic covering on the seats. I have a replacement carpet but have not installed it. The 4-speed automatic transmission upshifts and downshifts perfectly. It upshifts as it is supposed to when you lift on the accelerator above 20 MPH and it will downshift when the accelerator is depressed just as a modern car does. I have a complete service manual that explains all the systems in the car. Chrysler was noted for its state of the art engineering and it is quite impressive. It has power steering and vacuum assisted brakes. The Hemi engine starts reliably and runs smoothly. The oil pressure gauge shows excellent readings. I have not noticed any smoking or oil consumption. The ammeter and generator work perfectly. The paint on the car is original and shows a lovely patina. There is evidence that some repair was done to the right rear quarter as the paint appears newer in that area. The trim shows some pitting but is in good condition for its age. I had to install an exterior transmission oil cooler as I could not find a replacement for the engine block mounted heat exchanger which proved to be defective. The original part is still in place but I have by-passed it. The coolant lines are still the original ones so it could be put back to original very easily if the part could be located. The Fluid Torque Drive (torque converter) has a leak that can be remedied with replacing the seals. I have the seal kit. There are some small rust spots on the body. I have replacement rocker panels that have yet to be installed. Also, the heater core was by-passed when I got the car. I have not attended to this as I live in Florida and don’t need a heater. |

2019 Chrysler Pacifica and Dodge Grand Caravan 35th Anniversary Editions debut in Chicago
Mon, Feb 4 2019Just ahead of the 2019 Chicago Auto Show, FCA revealed a pair of special editions to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the original Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager. The 2019 Chrysler Pacifica, Pacifica Hybrid and Dodge Grand Caravan 35th Anniversary Edition models will make their full debut this week sporting special badging and paint. Since the original 1984 models debuted, Chrysler has sold more than 14.6 million minivans around the world. Chrysler introduced the original Caravan and Voyager in late 1983. The pair shared much with Lee Iacocca's storied K-platform. K-based models such as the Dodge Omni and Plymouth Horizon helped turn around Chrysler's fortunes in the early '80s. Likewise, the Caravan and Voyager were a huge success and provided the template for modern minivans including the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna. The Pacifica and Grand Caravan 35th Anniversary Editions both come with an all-black interior featuring Cranberry Wine accent stitching on the seats, steering wheel, door trim, instrument panel bezels and door handles. There's also a 35th Anniversary logo on the floor mats plus badges on the grille and liftgate. The package is available on Pacifica Touring L, Touring L Plus and Limited trims, including hybrid models. An optional S package (blacked out trim) can be added to any 35th anniversary Pacifica. The anniversary package can be added to Grand Caravan SE and SXT models. The anniversary package will be available sometime this summer.
Dodge Grand Caravan reportedly will cease production in 2020
Wed, Jul 24 2019The Dodge Grand Caravan looks like it may finally be reaching its demise next year. A report from Automotive News Canada says the old Dodge minivan will cease production in May 2020. The report cites AutoForecast Solutions as the source of its news. FCA confirmed to us that the van will be going away eventually, but the company is not ready to put an official end date on it yet. For the time being, it looks like the Grand Caravan’s long run will eventually grind to a halt in Windsor, Ontario, the vanÂ’s only production site. With the introduction of the Chrysler Voyager as the budget minivan option from Chrysler, FCA may think it no longer has any use for the outdated Dodge. The Grand Caravan has a starting price of $28,535, whereas the new Voyager is priced from $28,480. ThatÂ’s an almost identical starting point, but we still donÂ’t know what kind of incentives FCA will offer for the Voyager. There are typically big cuts for the Grand Caravan, which have pushed recent average transaction prices down to $24,972. We imagine itÂ’ll be much more difficult for FCA to offer discounts of that magnitude to Voyager shoppers. Still, AutoForecast Solutions told Automotive News it believes FCA will transition folks away from the Grand Caravan. “For the 2020 model year, theyÂ’ll likely run to fleet and then get the consumers to buy the new Voyager,” says Sam Fiorani, vice president of global vehicle forecasting at AutoForecast Solutions. Eliminating the Grand Caravan would be a strong bet on ChryslerÂ’s strategy of splitting the Pacifica into two different model lines. Nearly every month, FCA sells more Grand Caravans than Pacificas. The Pacifica is the far superior minivan to own, but you canÂ’t argue with a cheap price. Once the Grand Caravan is gone, budget minivan buyers will have no choice but to buy a Voyager if they want the cheapest new option out there. Entries from the few other manufacturers that produce minivans are all going to be more expensive than the Voyager. The 2020 Pacifica and Voyager team are slated to reach dealers later this year, but it wonÂ’t be until next year that weÂ’re able to fully take stock of how this plays out for FCA.
Junkyard 1983 Dodge Rampage has Franco-American roots
Mon, Jun 20 2016Lee Iacocca and the K-Cars get most of the credit for saving Chrysler after the company's 1979 bailout by the US government, but the success of the Simca-derived Omnirizon platform was a large, if overlooked, component of Chrysler's early-1980s resurgence. The Dodge Omni and Plymouth Horizon were sold in the United States for the 1978 through 1990 model years, and variants included the 1983-1987 Dodge Charger and the Rampage, this well-worn example of which I spotted in a Denver self-service wrecking yard last week. The early Omnirizons came with a Volkswagen-sourced 1.7-liter engine, but all of the Rampage pickups (and their near-identical Plymouth Scamp siblings) came from the factory with a 2.2-liter K-Car engine making 96 horses. This truck has a 4-speed manual transmission, which would have made it reasonably quick by Malaise Era standards. This one had plenty of body filler and rust, even before the crash that sent it on that final tow-truck ride to this place, so it wouldn't have been worth restoring. Still, we can hope that some of its parts will live on in other L-body trucks.
