GM Recalling 370,000 Trucks For Fire Risk
Mon, Jan 13 2014DETROIT (AP) - General Motors is recalling 370,000 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups from the 2014 model year to fix software that could cause the exhaust components to overheat and start a fire. The recall includes 303,000 trucks in the U.S. and 67,000 in Canada and Mexico. All of the trucks involved have 4.3-liter or 5.3-liter engines. GM said eight fires have been reported, but no injuries. One garage was damaged, the company said. All of the incidents occurred in cold weather. The company is asking customers not to leave their trucks idling unattended. GM dealers will reprogram the software for free. The company will inform owners starting Jan. 16. The major recall announcement, which came on Saturday, marred the Silverado's winning of the 2014 North American Truck of the Year Award at the Detroit Auto Show on Monday. Wed, 13 Mar 2013Full Disclosure: in my younger days, I loved nothing more than tormenting passengers with my behind-the-wheel hijinks. Once, after a particularly artful handbrake turn on a two-lane at around 50 miles per hour, I left one backseat occupant crying in their own lap. This isn't necessarily something to be proud of, but it gives you a glimpse into why it is that I find this ad from Pepsi so damn disappointing. The premise is beautiful. Take NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon, give him a disguise and set him loose upon some unsuspecting used car dealer. Hilarity ensues.
Except that this Pepsi Max commercial is so obviously staged, it can't help but feel like some ham-fisted marketing fail. From the strategically placed aftermarket cupholder mounted mid-dash for the hidden camera to the fact that the supposed dealer Camaro is displayed as a 2009 model (Hint: Chevrolet didn't make any), this clip is about as organic as a Twinkie. Still, we would never turn down a chance to watch Gordon thrash on a rental-spec coupe - only problem is, he probably didn't even do the driving himself. Check it out below.
2016 Chevy Volt wins Green Car of the Year
Thu, Nov 19 2015The award ceremony for the 2016 Green Car Of The Year announcement at the LA Auto Show today started with a joke video by juror Jay Leno. Showing of a restored and refurbished 100-year-old Detroit Electric EV, Leno said that while there were a lot of different powertrains in the running this year, he didn't expect any German diesels to win. Yuk yuk. There was no doubt that Leno was right; there were no diesels in the finalist's circle. The winner this year was the new, second-generation Chevy Volt, a plug-in hybrid with a 53-mile electric range and 106 MPGe. The first-gen car won the title five years ago, making the Volt the first model to be crowned Green Car Of The Yera more than once. The other finalists this year were the Audi A3 E-Tron, the new Toyota Prius, the Hyundai Sonata, and the Honda Civic. One of Green Car Journal's most important factors in deciding the winner is widespread availability, said Green Car Journal editor Ron Cogan as he announced the award. Qualifying vehicles also have to be on sale by January 1st of the award year (in this case, 2016). For the record, AutoblogGreen readers also picked the Volt to win in our poll a few months ago with 42 percent of the vote. Second place was the Prius, with 21 percent. Earlier this year, Green Car Journal had to strip the awards from two diesel vehicles, the 2009 VW Jetta TDI, which won in 2008, and the 2010 Audi A3 TDI, the 2010 winner.
