GM claims it's first to sell million 30+ mpg vehicles

As we continue to put together all the data for the year-end edition of By The Numbers, General Motors has announced that it sold more than a million vehicles in the US last year that achieved at least 30 miles per gallon on the highway. More impressively, GM managed this feat using multiple strategies including small vehicle size, turbocharged engines and hybrid or plug-in technologies across four brands (Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC) accounting for 13 separate models. This number will grow even more in 2013 thanks to cars like the all-electric Spark, the diesel Cruze, the range-extended Cadillac ELR and the Buick Encore compact CUV.
GM's small car sales were up 39 percent last year helping to attain this million-sales mark for 30-mpg models, and almost 40 percent of all GM sales consisted of cars with fuel-efficient I4 engines. In regards to more advanced means of improving fuel economy, GM says that it plans on having 500,000 vehicles with "some form of electrification" on the road by 2017.

2017 Chevrolet Trax gets a friendlier face, more tech

Chevrolet only introduced the Trax for the 2015 model year in the US, but since the car was available for many years in other markets, it's overdue for a refresh. The 2017 model year updates include a major improvement in the CUV's styling and a more extensive slate of available tech. The current Trax looks somewhat frumpy due to its chunky headlights and square face, but the 2017 update does wonders for the compact CUV's styling. The narrower headlights wrap around the front end, and higher trim levels get LED running lights. The angular lower portion of the grille also has more visual flair compared to the current rounded shape. Around back, there are minor tweaks to the bumper and taillights. The 2017 Trax's interior looks like a much nicer place to spend time. A new instrument panel includes an analog speedometer and tachometer, plus a digital info display on the right side. The infotainment system is now Chevy's seven-inch MyLink unit with available Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and 4G LTE support. Chrome trim on the center stack and dashboard also make the updated Trax seem more luxurious inside. The latest model keeps the current powertrain, which consists of a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque and a six-speed automatic gearbox. Buyers can now enhance the CUV's safety with optional side blind zone alert, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision alert, and lane departure warning. The 2017 Trax goes on sale this fall in LS, LT, and Premier trims. You can get a good look at the improved styling in the gallery above, and expect live photos of the CUV from the Windy City soon. Junkyard Gem: 1980 Chevrolet LUV Mikado

During the 1970s and into the 1980s, each member of the Detroit Big Three imported Japanese small pickups and sold them with Ford (Mazda Proceed), Dodge/Plymouth (Mitsubishi Forte), or Chevrolet (Isuzu Faster) badges here. Ford developed the Ranger and killed the Courier for 1983 (though Americans could still buy the Mazda-badged version all the way through 1993), while The General axed the LUV after the S-10 debuted in the 1982 model year. Isuzu sold the same truck as the P'up through 1987, though, and we might as well follow up our recent P'up Junkyard Gem with its LUV predecessor. LUV stood for Light Utility Vehicle, and I've managed to spot a handful in the boneyards over the years. This one now resides in a yard in northeastern Colorado. The Mikado trim package included striped seat upholstery and a sporty steering wheel, plus these cool dash badges. As far as I can tell, no LUV Mikado advertising featured any Gilbert and Sullivan tunes. This one is fairly rusty for Front Range Colorado, and it has endured a bed swap from some other small truck. The engine is the 75-horse Isuzu 1.8-liter. Members of this engine family went into everything from Chevy Chevettes to Isuzu Troopers in the United States. Very unusually for a small pickup during the Malaise Era, this one has a luxurious automatic transmission. Acceleration must have been a leisurely affair in this truck. Air conditioning? Unheard of! Someone stuck every one of their lunchtime apple stickers on the driver's door. After 41 years of work, this truck is done. Come on strong in a LUV of your own!
