Beautiful barn-find, survivor, complete, stock, and original example of the very desirable 1953 short bed, half ton, 3100 5 window pickup truck. 1953 was the last year of the Stovebolt 6 235CID engine, 2 piece split windshield, and cool front grill prior to the upgraded (and less desirable/attractive) 1954 and 1st Generation 1955 models. This one had $3600 invested (in 1990 dollars) in a rebuild of the engine, replacement of the 3 speed manual transmission, new motor mounts, new brakes, new exhaust, etc. (I have receipts) in anticipation of a restoration that never happened. After all that work it just sat in a garage for two plus decades. The engines turns over fine and the oil looks good. All it needs is a carburetor. Once installed, it would take very little to get her running. And included is one of those nifty FRAM external oil filters (see pics) and a freshly rebuilt starter (see pics).

The interior looks great. All the gauges, buttons, knobs and levers are in place. The dash is perfect with no cutting or butchery of any kind. Floorboards and kick panels are decent with a little rust through and some old repairs; definitely nothing major (see pics). Column shift linkage, clutch/brake pedals, heater, door panels, and window/door handles are all included (see pics). All glass is good. Windows roll up and down nicely. Doors open and close very solidly. It comes with an additional speedometer (see pics) that is in much better shape than the one currently mounted.

I think the exterior is excellent. It looks like it has had one ancient respray in burgundy. Other than the cab corners (see pics), rust is pretty much non-existent. Running boards and all six hangers are included but not installed (see pics). One hood hinge is missing (passenger side). Bed is straight and rust-free; wood is long gone (kits are readily available) but all hardware remains (see pics). Rims are the original 16 inchers with a spare. Tires have cracking. The completeness, originality and quality of the sheet metal are definitely among the major strengths of this truck.

This is a very sweet, honest example of something that is getting tougher to find each day. It's got wonderful patina and could be made into a practical, reliable daily driver with little effort. It also represents an outstanding basis for a complete restoration due to the completeness and originality. I hope it finds it's way to an owner who gives it the stewardship it deserves. Just my opinion. My name is Chris and I am happy to answer all your questions. Please call me at 435-669-1470. I also have tons of extra pics that detail every nook and cranny and show all the extra parts. Please send me a non-Ebay email address and I will send them out promptly. This beauty is located in the dry, desert community of St. George, Utah (about 100 miles north of Las Vegas). Thank you very much for your interest.

Steve McQueen's last movie car, now Pawn Stars-owned, up for auction [w/video]

Sun, 03 Feb 2013

The last car Steve McQueen ever drove in a movie is officially up for auction. The 1951 Chevrolet Styline DeLuxe Convertible you see above is now owned by none other than Rick Harrison of Pawn Stars fame, but once ferried McQueen around the set of his last film, 1980's The Hunter. That flick saw the Bullit star play a bumbling bounty hunter and didn't exactly set the box office on fire. McQueen bought the car after production wrapped, and four years later it sold at his estate sale at the Imperial Palace in Las Vegas.
Flash forward to 2003, and the convertible received a full restoration back to near-stock specifications. Hagerty Insurance estimates the car to be worth around $45,000 without the significant providence. Given its ties to one of film's most popular gearheads, the old Chevrolet could fetch up to 10 times that when it goes under the gavel in Ft Luaderdale, Florida on March 22. You can head over to the Auctions America site for more information. You can also check out the trailer for The Hunter below.

BMW, Hyundai score big in JD Power's first Tech Experience Index

Mon, Oct 10 2016

While automakers are quick to brag about winning a JD Power Initial Quality Study award, the reality, as we've pointed out before, is that these ratings are somewhat misleading, since IQS doesn't necessarily distinguish genuine quality issues. JD Power's new Tech Experience Index aims to solve that problem. The new metric takes the same 90-day approach as IQS but focuses exclusively on technology – collision protection, comfort and convenience, driving assistance, entertainment and connectivity, navigation, and smartphone mirroring. It splits the industry up into just seven segments, based loosely on size, which is why the Chevrolet Camaro is in the same division (mid-size) as Kia Sorento and the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class is in the same segment as the Hyundai Genesis (mid-size premium). It makes for some screwy bedfellows, to be sure. Still, splitting tech experience away from initial quality should allow customers to make more informed and intelligent decisions when buying new vehicles. In the inaugural study, respondents listed BMW and Hyundai as the big winners, with two segment awards – the 2 Series for small premium and the 4 Series for compact premium, and the Genesis for mid-size premium and Tucson for small segment. The Chevrolet Camaro (midsize), Kia Forte (compact), and Nissan Maxima (large) scored individual wins. Ford also had a surprising hit with the Lincoln MKC, which ranked third in the compact premium segment behind the 4 Series and Lexus IS. This is a coup for the Blue Oval, whose woeful MyFord Touch systems made the brand a victim of the IQS' flaws in the early 2010s. But Ford and other automakers might not want to celebrate just yet. According to JD Power, there's still a lot of room for improvement – navigation systems were the lowest-rated piece of tech in the study. Instead, customers repeatedly saluted collision-avoidance and safety systems, giving the category the best marks of the study and listing blind-spot monitoring and backup cameras as two must-have features – 96 percent of respondents said they wanted those two systems in their next vehicle. But this isn't really a surprise. Implementation of safety systems from brand to brand is similar, and they don't require any input from users, unlike navigation and infotainment systems which are frustratingly deep.
