Stolen '79 Vette finds home at Dream Cruise [w/video]
Mon, Aug 17 2015After over three decades of waiting, George Talley finally has his 1979 Chevrolet Corvette back, and it's as good as new. The coupe was stolen off of a Detroit street in 1981, but last year Talley received a call that the 'Vette was found in Mississippi. General Motors Executive Vice President Mark Reuss heard the touching story and had the automaker help get the car back to the Motor City. Now after a restoration by the GM Heritage Center and Autometric Body Shop, Talley got the keys to his Corvette back during the Woodward Dream Cruise. When Autoblog spoke to him after the coupe was returned last year, Talley said that the first thing he wanted to do with it was, "I think I'm going to cruise Belle Isle." We hope he enjoys the drive because the experience is a long time coming. You can watch Talley's excited reaction to see his newly refurbished 'Vette for the first time in the video below. Stolen Corvette Reunion and Restoration on Display at Woodward Dream Cruise 2015-08-14 DETROIT – George Talley's 1979 Corvette was stolen 33 years ago and recovered last year in Mississippi. General Motors executives, who heard of the recovery, offered to bring the car back home to Mr. Talley and restore it on his behalf. The GM Heritage Center, in conjunction with Autometric Body Shop in Center Line, Mich., took on the restoration project. Talley got an opportunity to see the progress ahead of its official reveal at the Woodward Dream Cruise on Saturday. Founded in 1911 in Detroit, Chevrolet is now one of the world's largest car brands, doing business in more than 115 countries and selling around 4.8 million cars and trucks a year. Since 2010, Chevy Volt has outsold Nissan Leaf by just two units
Tue, Mar 3 2015The first two plug-in vehicles from major automakers in the US were the Chevy Volt and the Nissan Leaf. Ever since they went on sale to much fanfare in late 2010, we've been tracking the monthly sales with great interest (and, of course, other green vehicle sales as well). After a big initial lead by the Volt – the Volt outsold the Leaf 23,461 to 9,819 in 2012 – the Leaf has been chugging along and outsold the Volt every month since November 2013. We knew that the cumulative totals would soon tip in favor of the Leaf, but for at least one more month, the Volt is going to be able to say its the most popular plug-in vehicle in the US. Overall, for all officially reported sales of the Leaf and the Volt, things are almost exactly tied. Since the vehicles went on sale in the end of 2010 until the end of February 2015, the Volt has sold 74,592 units and the Leaf has sold ... drumroll please ... 74,590 units. For February, Leaf sales totaled 1,198 units, a 17-percent drop from the 1,425 Leafs sold last February. Brendan Jones, Nissan's director of Electric Vehicle Sales and Infrastructure, said in a statement that, "Tough winter weather in several key markets held EV sales back in February. As we head into spring, we look forward to seeing more dealership traffic so shoppers can experience firsthand the benefits of the all-electric Nissan Leaf." Of course, it was cold in the US last February, too, but we're sure that the nasty weather did indeed play a role last month. Things were even worse for the Chevy Volt, which dropped to just 693 copies sold, down 47 percent from the 1,210 sold last year. That's just barely enough for Chevy to keep talking about its plug-in sales leadership, but we expect the message to change once the March numbers come out next month. Related Video:
Chevrolet SS previewed by Holden VF Commodore SS V show car
Thu, 14 Feb 2013It won't be long before we see the official, production-ready Chevrolet SS sedan (hint: it will be revealed this weekend). And to tide us over until all of the official details are released about the US-spec version, we have this: the Holden VF Commodore SS V show car, a performance-oriented brother to the Calais V that debuted earlier in the week.
What we really want to know about the SS V is what lies underhood, but General Motors' Australian arm is keeping that under wraps until the Chevy model breaks cover this weekend. Nevertheless, it's obvious that the SS V will be a serious performer, with all sorts of aggressive cues driving that home on the car's exterior. Take a look at those 20-inch billet aluminum wheels that hide big Brembo brake calipers up front, the sculpted hood and front fascia, the wide air intakes with LED running lights and the quad exhaust pipes out back. It's like the Pontiac G8 GXP never even left us.
Inside, there's a sporty-looking interior with aluminum accents that mix in with black leather and suede surfaces, all tied together in the middle with an eight-inch MyLink touchscreen infotainment system. It looks great, and again, while we don't know anything regarding powertrain details, it makes us oh-so happy to see a manual shifter smack dab in the middle of the center console.
