RARE OPPORTUNITY TO OWN A VERY LOW PRODUCTION TRUCK, MODIFIED AND RECERTIFIED BY A WELL KNOWN CUSTOM COACH COMPANY. 1989 CHEVROLET C1500 CHOO CHOO CUSTOM PICKUP TRUCK.  CHOO CHOO CUSTOMS, CHATTANOOGA, TN., BEST KNOWN FOR EL CAMINOS, MODIFIED EVERY TYPE OF VEHICLES FROM CONVERSION VANS TO PASSENGER CARS. THIS TRUCK IS IN PRIMARILY THE SAME ORIGINAL, UNMOLESTED CONDITION AS WHEN IT LEFT CHOO CHOO CUSTOMS. PREVIOUS OWNER BOUGHT THE TRUCK IN 1990. METICULOUS STORAGE, CARE, AND MAINTENANCE THROUGHOUT THE YEARS.

The Chevrolet C series trucks were built from 1960-1999. That is a 39 year production run. The C series was finally replaced by the Silverado in 1999. Chevrolet has been at the forefront of design and performance since the beginning.

A new, more modern look came in 1967, along with a new nickname: "Action Line". It was with this revision of the C/K truck that General Motors expanded the option list of comfort and convenience items to a vehicle line that had previously been for work purposes alone. This has been referred to as the Golden Age of Chevy Trucks. 1967 was the beginning of the nation's true love affair with trucks.

Although revolutionary in 1973, by the mid eighties Chevrolet engineers realized a complete new redesign would be crucial. The result was the new generation model, known as the GMT400 platform. There was a drastic difference between the 3rd-generation and 4th-generation GM trucks, and the buying public realized this immediately. It is a success story that has transcended time, will continue beyond 2014.

The popularity of these trucks motivated many aftermarket custom coach companies to design and produce modified specialty versions of these vehicles. One of these companies was Choo Choo Customs Inc. in Chattanooga, TN. This company began building conversion vans in 1975. Best known for their collaboration with GM from 1983-1987, modifying  Choo Choo El Caminos. Choo Choo went out of business in the mid 2000s. At that time, Honest Charley’s Speed Shop (also based out of Chattanooga , TN ) assumed a portion of Choo Choo’s employees and El Camino parts, which they still sell today. There is also a relatively new company, Choo-Choo Automotive Styling, advertising as the specialty parts division of Choo-Choo Customs Inc. It is unknown whether this is a division of Honest Charlie's, or a stand alone company.

Choo Choo customs also produced modified C and K series trucks until they closed their doors. Unlike the El Caminos, there are no published production figures on any other Choo Choo modified vehicles. One might assume that any Choo Choo example is a very limited production vehicle. Although basically an appearance package, this modification still sets this truck apart from the norm, and these are unique and highly desirable.

As with all unique vehicles, fakes are rampant in the hobby. The only positive verification of a Choo Choo Customs vehicle is the recertification tag in the rear portion of the driver door jam. The truck in this auction was modified and recertified in April, 1989, per the door tag. A photo of the recertification tag is prominently displayed in the main photo body.

GM pickup truck plant in Flint to add 1,000 assembly workers

Tue, Feb 5 2019

FLINT, Mich. — General Motors said Tuesday it will add 1,000 workers to build new heavy-duty pickup trucks at its plant in Flint, Michigan, and will give priority to GM workers who were laid off elsewhere. The announcement comes the day after GM said it was starting to hand pink slips to about 4,000 salaried workers in the latest round of a restructuring announced in late November that will ultimately shrink its white-collar workforce in North America by 15 percent out of 54,000. GM has come under fire from U.S. President Donald Trump and Midwestern lawmakers for its plans to stop production at five North American factories and cut up to 15,000 jobs in all. The automaker has said it is trying to find new jobs for 1,500 U.S. hourly workers at the affected plants. Flint's truck plant could be a haven for many of these employees. Sales of heavy-duty pickups in the United States have grown to more than 600,000 vehicles a year, up more than 20 percent since 2013, according to industry data. Prices for luxury models can easily top $70,000. GM on Tuesday will celebrate the launch of a new generation of heavy-duty GMC and Chevrolet pickups at the assembly plant in Flint, Michigan, that is now building all such trucks for the company. Elsewhere in the company on Monday, two people briefed on the cuts in the white-collar salaried workforce said GM is cutting hundreds of jobs at its information technology centers in Texas, Georgia, Arizona and Michigan and more than 1,000 jobs at its Warren, Michigan Tech Center. GM is filing new required mass layoff notices with state agencies and disclosed the cuts to lawmakers. The largest U.S. automaker announced in November it would cut a total of about 15,000 jobs and end production at five North American plants. The cuts include eliminating about 8,000 salaried workers, or about 15 percent. GM cut about 1,500 contract workers in December and said 2,300 salaried workers accepted buyouts, officials said. "These actions are necessary to secure the future of the company, including preserving thousands of jobs in the U.S. and globally. We are taking action now while the overall economy and job market are strong, increasing the ability of impacted employees to continue to advance in their careers, should they choose to do so," GM spokesman Pat Morrissey said, adding the bulk of the cuts should be completed in the next two weeks. Morrissey said GM would provide salaried workers with severance packages and job placement services.

GM CEO Mary Barra predicts mass electrification will take decades

Tue, Jun 9 2020

General Motors is allocating a substantial amount of money to the development of electric technology, but Mary Barra, the firm's CEO, conceded that battery-powered cars won't fully replace their gasoline-burning counterparts for several decades. She stressed the shift is ongoing, but she hinted it will be slower than many assume. "We believe the transition will happen over time," affirmed Barra on "Leadership Live with David Rubenstein," a talk show aired by Bloomberg Television. She added that not every car will be electric in 2040. "It will happen in a little bit longer period, but it will happen," she told the host. She was presumably talking about the United States market; the situation is markedly different in Europe and in China, where strict government regulations (and even stricter ones on the horizon) are accelerating the shift towards electric cars. On the surface, it doesn't look like General Motors has much invested in electrification; the only battery-powered model it sells in America in 2020 is the Chevrolet Bolt (pictured), which undeniably remains a niche vehicle. Sales totaled 16,418 units in 2019, meaning the Corvette beat it by about 1,500 sales. In comparison, Cadillac sold 35,424 examples of the aging last-generation Escalade during the same time period. And yet, the company isn't giving up. It has numerous electric models in the pipeline including a slightly larger version of the aforementioned Bolt, the much-hyped GMC Hummer pickup, and an electric crossover assigned to the Cadillac brand. These models (and others) will use the Ultium battery technology that General Motors is currently developing. Its engineers are also working on a modular platform capable of underpinning a wide variety of cars. Bringing these innovations to the market is a Herculean task. EVs may not take over for decades, but Barra and her team must believe their 2% market share will increase significantly in the coming years if they're approving these programs. Autonomous technology is even costlier, more complicated, and more time-consuming to develop. Barra nonetheless expects to see the first General Motors-built driverless vehicles on the road by 2025. "I definitely think it will happen within the next five years. Our Cruise team is continuing to develop technology so it's safer than a human driver. I think you'll see it clearly within five years," she said on the same talk show. Her statement is vague but realistic.

Diesel Power finds the ultimate modified oil-burner

Sat, 24 Aug 2013

For nine years, Diesel Power magazine has run the Diesel Power Challenge, this year's grindfest being "a week-long torture test that features seven events, nine trucks, 8,000 horsepower, and nearly 15,000 pound-feet of torque." The road to being crowned "the most powerful truck" starts with a dyno run, and then continues through the completion of a CDL-style obstacle course, an eighth-of-a-mile drag race while towing a 10,000-pound trailer, a quarter-mile drag race without a trailer, a fuel economy test in the mountains and finally a sled-pulling test through a 300-foot-long packed-mud pit.
What kind of trucks get into such a fight? Last year's winner, for instance - who upgraded his truck this year to prove he didn't "luck into the win" - drives a 2008 Ford F-250 Super Duty with a 6.4-liter Power Stroke V8 upgraded with a custom intake, Elite Diesel triple turbos and a two-stage nitrous system. Another competitor has a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 powered by a 5.9-liter Cummins inline-six, upgraded with Garrett turbos, dual-stage nitrous, a seven-inch exhaust stack and twin fans built into the bed to cool the Sun Coast Omega transmission. The numbers on that truck: 1,255 horsepower, and 2,063 pound-feet of torque at the wheels. Naturally, as the image above might suggest, things don't always end well.
You'll find all five videos covering this years challenge below. A scene in the dyno video sums it all up perfectly: a competitor leaves his nitrous on too long and the crew is treated to some ominous poppings, he leans out the window, throws both hands up and shouts, "Amer'ca!"
