This flat-out awesome 1968 Chevy C10 pickup is exactly what you need for this summer's cruise season. With a snarling 383 cubic inch stroker motor, a gorgeous bright red paint job, and just the right stance, this is the truck we all wish we could own. Still willing to work hard, but ready to play at a moment's notice, you can think of it as a Camaro with a bed.
The bright red paint means this truck is far from subtle, especially with those bulging rear fenders. During the build, they added a cowl induction hood, custom LED side-marker lights, and some special LED taillights with integral back-up lamps, so nobody will mistake it for someone else's truck. It's also a super-straight southern truck with great sheetmetal and no signs of heavy bodywork anywhere, and the shiny paint only emphasizes how clean this truck really is. Panel gaps are good and everything lines up well, indicative of careful workmanship and excellent care. The chrome CHEVROLET lettering on the tailgate is a new twist on a traditional look that looks perfect here, and the stainless factory grille gives it a semi-custom look that works really well. The front and rear bumpers have been re-chromed, adding just the right amount of brightwork to the otherwise monochromatic truck, and the wood floor in the bed is simply gorgeous.
The gray interior has been upgraded from its working-class roots with a pair of buckets cribbed from a late model. Vastly more comfortable than the original bench, the seats look like they belong in there, especially when matched to the gray carpets and custom door panels. The original gauges, including an ultra-rare tachometer in the center, are among the best features of these trucks and they look great. An AM/FM/cassette stereo head unit has been neatly fitted into the original radio's slot in the dash, right above the aftermarket A/C unit that lives underneath. In between the seats you'll find a slick B&M shifter for the TH350 3-speed automatic transmission and a thick leather-wrapped Grant GT steering wheel makes this truck feel more like a muscle car than a pickup truck. As icing on the cake, note that all the glass save for the vent windows is new.
That muscle car feel is certainly enhanced by the thumping 383 cubic inch stroker motor that lives under the hood. Renowned for making big block torque in a small block package, the show-quality 383 is fed by an Edelbrock carburetor atop a chrome Edelbrock intake, a great combination that delivers more than impressive performance. It's also dressed with chrome valve covers and an open-element air cleaner, all framed by shiny chrome inner fenders that must have cost a fortune. 3.08 gears out back make for an easy, relaxed cruiser on the highway, although it still launches hard with a 2500 RPM stall converter in the TCI Street Fighter transmission. The suspension has been lowered just enough to give it the right rake, and the soundtrack from the custom stainless steel exhaust system is worth the price of admission all by itself. Fat 255/65/16 radials have been fitted to American Racing aluminum rims, and the combination properly fills those big wheelwells.
A truck that's ready to work or play, with the moves of a muscle car. What could be better?

Nevada granted Daimler Trucks North America the first license to run an autonomous commercial vehicle on public roads in the United States Tuesday, marking another milestone in the technology's rapid advancement. Gov. Brian Sandoval and Daimler truck chief Wolfgang Bernhard promptly used the license to lap Highway 15 near Las Vegas in a newly revealed Freightliner Inspiration Truck. It was a clear signal that autonomous driving is big-rig reality, though it's still a long way from widespread use. Nevada certified two of Daimler's Freightliner Inspiration Trucks, which use the company's Highway Pilot system with a stereo camera, radar, and lane-keeping collision-prevention features to regulate the brakes and steering. The radar component has a long-range sensor that can cover 820 feet at an 18-degree angle and a shorter-range unit that stretches 230 feet at a 130-degree angle. The Inspiration trucks are based on the existing Freightliner Cascadia Evolution model used on US roads. In addition to the autonomous technologies, it also has futuristic design cues, including blue lighting in the front and a new hood and grille. While there are only two Freightliner Inspiration trucks in existence, Daimler expects to bring the Highway Pilot system into mass-produced big rigs by 2025, in time to capitalize on the market's predicted growth. The German truckmaker predicts the global hauling market will triple by 2050, and the United States will be a key part of that growth. Trucks carry 69.1 percent the nation's domestic freight tonnage and hauled 9.7 billion tons of freight in 2013, according to the American Trucking Association. Daimler expects autonomous driving to augment this growth, and perhaps evolve the role of the truck driver. Still, the company points out autonomous tech is not meant to replace drivers, but to assist them and relieve fatigue and monotony on long hauls. The driver has to stay in control for passing, in city traffic, and when hooking up the trailer. The company said autonomous driving also offers the potential for improved fuel economy – tests showed a five-percent gain – and lower maintenance costs. Daimler also said the technology could reduce congestion on the road. Much of this is attributable to the constant flow of traffic, which is aided by autonomous driving. While the benefits are becoming increasingly apparent, autonomous technology is still met with skepticism.

General Motors is continuing to adjust to excess supply of some of its brands' models. To get production more in line with the vehicles' actual demand, the automotive giant is idling two of its factories in North America in the coming months. The Orion Assembly plant is going to be down from March 9-13, according to an anonymous plant worker and another insider speaking to Automotive News. The factory builds the Chevrolet Sonic and Buick Verano, but there are plenty of both models sitting on dealer lots, including 216 days worth of Sonics, according to AN. The factory already had two idle periods announced to reduce the excess. In addition, downtime is scheduled at GM's "Flex" line at the Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, plant from April 13-17. This affects supply of the Chevrolet Camaro, Impala, Buick Regal and Cadillac XTS. Among them, the automotive giant has the largest supply of Regals ready for dealers with 213 days worth of them, according to AN. The future for the whole Oshawa factory is cloudy in general, though. There are rumors that it could close entirely in the future because the Camaro is leaving and the Regal and XTS might not last much longer than 2017. The Canadian government and the labor union there intend to put up a fight, though. Rumors of a mid-engine Corvette are like automotive industry folklore at this point. Every once in a while, news pops up that it might be happening or is under development, but nothing actually ever comes to fruition as something people can actually buy. The latest spy shots strongly suggest a mid-engine 'Vette is in the cards, yet again, possibly for 2018. Now, an op ed by former General Motors executive (and definite performance car fan) Bob Lutz in Road & Track gives the inside scoop on the history of one of these proposals and lays out how to make it happen today. According to Lutz, the company's engineers believed the C6 ZR1 was at the limit for front-engine, rear-wheel drive performance in that package, and the only solution was to move the powerplant behind the driver. Lutz even got then CEO Rick Wagoner on board. The scheme made it at least as far as clay models for mid-engine versions of the 'Vette and Cadillac XLR. Eventually, a lack of money got in the way, though, bringing the project to an end. Lutz puts a lot of faith in GM's current leaders, especially Mary Barra and Mark Reuss. He thinks the chances of a mid-engine 'Vette happening this time are better than 50 percent. The model, rumored to be named Zora, could offer over 700 horsepower in an ultra lightweight body and be priced at about $120,000 to "suck the doors off everybody." Head over to Road & Track to get some insights from this highly respected and entertaining auto industry veteran. Related Video:
