72 Buick Electra 225 Limited hardtop sedan with 15,700 documented original miles. Literally a time capsule in showroom condition. Estate car, part of stored collection. Driven only to maintain and on certain occasions. Two owners from new, we are the second. Best in the country, never been shown. Body, engine/drivetrain, lacquer paint, chrome, vinyl top, interior --  all 110% original and in stunning condition. Only things that have been changed/worked on are radiator, brakes, tires, and wiper blades.

Paint: original all lacquer Hunter Green code I, just gorgeous. Never any paintwork, never any accidents
Vinyl top: mint green, all original and stunning. No degradation of grain, no color fading, no corrosion of trim, no nothing, it's in showroom condition.

Interior: this is the part that makes folks jaws drop. Car is as new. The new car smell from 1972 is still there, something that can't be duplicated or recreated at any cost. There has never been any kind of cleaner or protectant applied to any of the interior, save for the Scotchguard protectant treatment that was done by the selling dealer and period correct. From the dash, sun visors and headliner, to the rear parcel shelf, and all cloth, fabric, vinyl, woodtone/plastic chrome, knobs, buttons, switches, door pull straps, armrests, map pockets, seat belts, and carpet in between, everything retains its original, correct sheen. No color fading, no abrading of fabric textures or vinyl grain, no "shiny-ness" in typical high usage areas like armrests,  the pebble grain of the steering wheel is factory perfect, including  the 9 and 3 o'clock positions  where there's usually some shiny wear even on very well kept cars. Switches click firmly, knobs have the proper resistance, sun visors hold firm in any position, no sloppiness, wiggling, looseness, nothing. Original Sonomatic AM radio never messed with, not a scratch on the dial, works perfectly. Carpet still has residual Scotchguard sheen on it from dealer prep, it's never been shampooed or touched, other than light vacuuming from what we can tell. All 4 original dark green Buick rubber floormat carpet savers in beautiful condition, all there.

This interior was custom ordered and was Buick's top of the line -- code 8439 Limited 4dr hardtop package 60/40 notchback seats with snap closing map pockets on backsides for rear passengers, Kismet tricot nylon brocade cloth in dark green (code 770) with matching Madrid grain vinyl trim. Again, every inch of the upholstery, including the firmness of the springs and cushioning -- it's all just as it left the factory. Equipment options: A/C, power windows, power driver's seat, trip odometer and speed alert.

Trunk still has original floormatting and 'particle board surrounds' and are in stunning condition. Tire jacking/car raising instruction decal is also original and still there on inside of trunk lid. Original selling dealer emblem still on outside trunk left edge, and we still have the matching dealer keyfob with original GM Briggs & Stratton keys. Also included is paperwork and original manuals, but no window sticker.

Inspection and test drive welcome to serious parties with advance notice. A nationally known restoration shop who has done other cars for us knows this car and can vouch for its integrity. We can provide their contact info upon request. We also have  more photos, including some of the engine, trunk, and underside which will be ready later this week; just ask if there's a certain area you'd like to see more of. 72 was the best year aesthetically for these fuselage bodied, pillar-less (no center 'B' post) full size GM luxury cars; every subsequent year 'til their demise in '76 brought more and more ungainly bumpers and an increasingly bloated appearance. The seat patterns of this Limited's package, moreover, were unique to 1972 -- that, too, was axed by cost cutting for more simple fabrics and seat cushion designs for the '73 Limited.

The best of its breed, and would make a great stablemate for a period complementary Stage One GS Riv. Drives beautifully. For those who cherish this type of car -- until they build a time machine, this is it.

IMPORTANT: Buy It Now is NOT an appointment maker to schedule a test drive. A $2,000 deposit via Paypal is required within 24 hours of auction close, (weekends count), and is non-refundable. Balance is due within 7 days by wire transfer or certified bank check. Backing out, of either the deposit or the balance remaining, is non payment and you will be reported, no exceptions. You are welcome to arrange a visit and test drive, and all serious, experienced buyers do this BEFORE pulling the trigger. Out of state buyers are obviously responsible for shipping costs and arrangements. If you wish to drive it out, we can pick you up from the airport if you're not local, but we are assuming, and you must confirm that you are: 1) a resident of the same state, or plan to register it to keep at a second residence you have in the same state, as you would have to immediately visit the DMV and get your own plates/registration/insurance, or 2) you have a dealer license or some authority to provide your own temporary tags/registration/insurance. WE ARE NOT A DEALER and are not able to transfer titles/provide temporary tags/iinsurance, etc of any kind. We don't know if the local DMV will issue temporary tags to out of state buyers wishing to drive the car out and register it in their home state; do your homework.

And of course the OBVIOUS: While this is a rare, superb, virtually mint, museum quality example of a fine car which has only 15,700 miles and has never let us down, it is still a 40 year old car, and we can't GUARANTEE its mechanical fitness or worthiness in any way. We have only used it rarely, on special occasions; and while it starts, runs, and drives just beautifully,  in our almost 8 years of ownership, I don't believe we've ever put more than 60 miles on it in one single day. We will provide you with all of the service records we have and refer you to 2 local shops who have serviced the car while in our ownership. They know (and love) the car, and before setting out on a road trip, would be happy to check the basics and make sure it's ok for a long trip.

Is this GM's next electric crossover?

Thu, Nov 16 2017

GM made headlines this week when CEO Mary Barra presented the company's electrification and automation plans at the Barclays Global Automotive Conference in New York. "We are committed to a future electric vehicle portfolio that will be profitable," Barra said, which could be taken as a jab at Tesla. In the presentation ( PDF here), though, we see a new vehicle in a slide titled "Leveraging existing BEV platform to expand in near term." The vehicle, seen above, accompanied the captions "New CUV entries" and "two entries by 2020." Is this a sneak preview of an upcoming electric crossover from GM? The image seems too realistic and intentional to be a random placeholder. If this is, indeed, an upcoming battery-electric CUV based on the Bolt, the question remains: Will it be a Chevy or a Buick? It has no visible badging, but it shares DNA from both brands. As Inside EVs points out, though, it does bear a resemblance to the Chevrolet FNR-X concept unveiled in Shanghai earlier this year. With two CUVs on the way, it's not unthinkable that there could be a version for each brand. In addition to this slide, the presentation includes plans for an "All new multi-brand, multi-segment platform" launching in 2021. The all-new modular battery system will cost less than $100 per kWh, providing higher energy density and faster charging. The platform will host at least nine different vehicles, including a compact crossover, seven-seat luxury SUV and a large commercial van. GM has said it will launch 20 new EVs by 2023, and that it targets 1 million EV sales per year by 2026. Many of those sales will be in China. Related Video:

GM slashes prices in China as sales falter

Thu, May 14 2015

Buying a vehicle from General Motors' stable of brands might be a lot cheaper in the near future – at least for customers in China. The effort comes as GM hopes to keep sales there growing, and the decision alludes to yet another sign that the Asian country no longer has the booming auto market of past years. GM and its Chinese joint venture partner SAIC are slashing prices by as much as the equivalent to $8,700 on 40 models from Buick, Chevrolet, and Cadillac, according to The Detroit News. Across all of automaker's nameplates, the overall sales dipped in China in April by 0.4 percent to 258,484 vehicles. Among the drops, Buick was down 8.5 percent, and Chevy shrunk 5.6 percent. Caddy's numbers increased 4.6 percent for the month, though. Buick remains a popular brand in the minds of Chinese consumers, but according to The Detroit News domestic automakers there are starting to eat into the dominance of foreign companies in the market. The country remains important for GM, though. Late last year, it outlined a future strategy that included China as a major pillar, including a $14 billion investment to build five new factories and boost sales. Junkyard Gem: 1997 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight LSS Supercharged

Tue, Mar 21 2017

Oldsmobile got terminated by The General in 2005, in part because the marketing suits decided that the first three letters of the marque's name made the cars undesirable to the under-75 set (never mind that 21st-century rappers continue to venerate Oldsmobiles). Not long before the demise of Olds, though, you could buy an Eighty-Eight with the supercharged L67 V6, known as the Luxury Sports Sedan or LSS. These cars are very rare today, but I spotted this '97 in a Denver self-service wrecking yard. These Eaton blowers are now so easy to find in wrecking yards that most of them go unpicked by customers. The going rate for this supercharger is about 50 bucks, because everyone who wants one already has a big hoard of the things. If you have ever wanted to drop a supercharger onto your crapcan race car's engine, now is the time. Performance was respectable for the era, with output of 240 hp and 280 lb-ft. The 3800 was the descendant of the ancient Buick V6, which debuted way back in 1962, so GM had had many decades in which to make it a dependable (though not very smooth-running) powerplant. Yes, you could still buy big ol' sedans with rear drums at the dawn of the 21st century. Did the LSS steal any sales from potential BMW or Mercedes-Benz buyers? Probably not many, though its $27,695 price tag must have looked pretty tempting when compared to that of the much slower $32,960 Lexus ES 300 in 1997. Right now is the best time to make a resolution you'll enjoy sticking with. The reviewers at Popular Mechanics were unable to break the first-year LSS.
