For sale is a 1999 BMW E36 M3 Convertible.  This is a genuine E36 M3, not a clone.

I am a BMW enthusiast and have taken car of this car in the 2+ years I have owned it, which includes professional detailing every 6 months, and hand waxing the entire car every month in between. The previous owner, an older gentleman and also an E36 enthusiast, took care of the car the same way.

To start, this is a very clean car with fewer than 80,000 miles, relatively low for a 15 year old car. The car is finished in Cosmos schwartz (black) over a stunning (and very rare) Modena interior, which offsets the black very nicely. In fact, there were only 104 E36 M3s convertibles made for the US market with this color combination, a testament to the car's rarity.

The paint is 7.5/10, there are some blemishes, but nothing major. The car has never been in an accident, and the all the molding that came with the E36 M3 is in tact. The top was replaced before I bought the car and is in good shape. It was patched just before I bought it (see pic), but is solid and will last quite a while. Speaking of the top, it goes down without an issue; occasionally, I will have to give it a slight push, which is common with older E36 convertibles, but usually that is not the case. The more you use the top, the better it is, and since I only drive it in good weather (never in winter/snow/rain), I have it down all the time.

The interior of this car is quite special. As stated above, this is the Modena interior, which has become very desirable in recent years for people looking at the E36 Ms. The seats are in excellent shape, though there is some cracking on the leather in the driver's seat (to be expected), but it is nothing serious. You may judge for yourself from the pictures. The car also comes with the original floor mats, which I have steam cleaned every year as part of the detail process. I cannot find Modena floor mats anywhere, including from Bavarian Autosport, the leader in wholesale parts for BMWs in the US. Therefore, I've done my best to preserve them, considering their rarity. Everything in the interior works, except for the digital clock, which is sometimes visible and sometimes not. All the other digital instruments work.

What also makes this car unique is that it comes with both the Premium (10 spoke M wheels and Harmonn Kardon sound system) and Cold Weather packages (heated front seats). Speaking of the wheels, note that they are in excellent shape as well, with no curb rash or damage.

This car is 100% original bone stock. Many of these cars have been modified in some way. Not this car. The engine is as exactly how it left the factory in Regensberg, Germany (no aftermarket computer chips, turbo boosters, etc). The S52 inline 6 was one of the best engines BMW had/has made.  The US models had yellow side markers, which many people who own E36 M3s have swapped for clear or smokey lenses. While they may not look as cool or updated as the clear lenses, the yellow lamps are a testament to the originality of the car. The only thing that is aftermarket is the stereo system; the E36s were know to have crummy radios, and the previous owner put in a Kenwood System complete with CD player and ipod hookup.

Recent service on the car includes:

New suspension system, complete with Bilstein heavy duty shocks in the back and new struts in the front ($2200)
New power steering pump and reservoir
New alternator
New spark plugs
New brakes (rotors, calipers, and pads)

This car has never been raced, tracked, thrashed or abused. Only cared for. I would really like to see it go to a good home, and to someone who appreciates it like I do. The E36 M3s were special cars.

Feel free to contact me with any questions or more pictures.

BMW takes 30th Anniversary Edition M5 out to drift

Thu, 04 Sep 2014

If you only look at the videos from BMW, it appears that the best way to celebrate the 30th birthday of the M5 is some smoky drifting, and it sure looks like a great way to mark the occasion to us. Now that the Bavarian brand's new 30th anniversary special edition is all set to hit the road, the most powerful M5 ever is getting it own chance to roast its tires on video, as well.
The M5 30th Anniversary Edition shouldn't have any problem hanging its rear end out, really. Under the hood, its twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 is turned up to 600 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque and can allegedly sprint to 60 miles per hour in a scant 3.7 seconds. That's pretty impressive for any sports car but especially for a sedan that can still carry four passengers comfortably cosseted in leather and Alcantara upholstery.
BMW is making just 300 of these celebratory models worldwide, and appropriately for the anniversary, only 30 of them are going to be available in the US. If the special M5 doesn't make your heart race, the video basks in a little nostalgia, as well, by showing off the original model for some historical context.

What happens when you take an engineer sliding in a BMW i8

Fri, Sep 19 2014

The BMW i8 is a pretty impressive car, and a highly visible one at that. It's a great brand ambassador, but not just for BMW. It's really no surprise that Formula E chose it as the safety car from the electric racing series. And, for its duties at tracks around the word, the i8 safety car got some slick upgrades, including wireless charging capabilities courtesy of Qualcomm. It's not your regular, cut-and-dry technology presentation. In the video below, Qualcomm engineers explain a little bit about what they do to enhance electric vehicles. But it's not your regular, cut-and-dry technology presentation. The engineers are forced to answer questions about Qualcomm's technology while riding along in the BMW i8 Qualcomm Safety Car driven by none other than Formula E driver Nelson Piquet, Jr. Sure, riding shotgun for hot laps at Donnington Park in an i8 sounds like a lot of fun, but these guys have a job to do, and Mr. Piquet isn't making it easy for them. The Qualcomm guys talk about taking technology and beefing it up for automotive use, explain the benefits of wireless charging and discuss some other stuff that's hard to pay attention to while watching the i8 get totally sideways in a smoky powerslide. See for yourself in the video below. If you miss something, don't worry; Qualcomm provides more explanation about its automotive technologies at its website, including safety, communication and, of course, inductive charging.

Recharge Wrap-up: BMW i8's Engine of the Year, biodiesel producer guilty

Fri, Jun 19 2015

BMW has won International Engine of the Year for the hybrid system in the i8. The i8 PHEV uses a 1.5-liter, three-cylinder gasoline engine with a hybrid drive unit including a 96-kilowatt electric motor. BMW beat Ford's 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine by a small margin to win the award for best overall engine. It also took the award for the 1.4-liter to 1.8-liter category, as well as best new engine. Tesla beat BMW to win the green engine category for the electric powertrain of the Tesla Model S. Read more at Green Car Congress, or see all of the results from the International Engine of the Year Awards. The head of Audi powertain development is quitting as the automaker steps up electrification. Stefan Knirsch has worked at Audi since late 2013, and previously worked at Porsche as the head of quality management and engine development. Germany's Auto Motor und Sport magazine had reported that Knirsch was leaving Audi, which Audi confirmed without giving a departure date or saying if he would be working elsewhere. Audi has been feeling pressure from its competitor Mercedes-Benz, and has been working on improving its EV offerings and autonomous vehicle technology. Read more from Reuters. The owner of a biodiesel company has pleaded guilty to fraud. Philip Joseph Rivkin, aka Felipe Poitan Arriaga, took part in a scheme to defraud the EPA, falsely claiming to be producing millions of gallons of biodiesel. This allowed his company, Green Diesel, to receive renewable fuel credits and sell them to oil companies and brokers. "These crimes are a serious threat to an important program that helps combat climate change," says Cynthia Giles of the EPA. "Companies and individual managers should get the message that there are serious consequences for breaking the rules and undermining the integrity of this program." Rivkin faces over 10 years in prison and $51 million in restitution. Read more in the press release below.
