2003 BMW 540i, M Sport Package, Automatic Transmission w/ 5-speed Steptronic, 4.4L V8, performance suspension & rear end, fully optioned.

This is a beautiful example of German produced automotive technology. These E39 5-series car from 1997-2003 are gaining in popularity as future collectibles and are renown for their perfect balance of power, weight and performance. Drives like a cushy highway cruiser or a very maneuverable sports sedan.
This car has been lovingly maintained by me the last couple years, and also by the MIT grad who owned it before me. I have both his and my sets of all service records and maintenance done over the last 5+ years.
Both he and I used authorized independent BMW mechanics, and kept up with all required and advised maintenance. No expense was spared by either one of us to keep this car running perfectly.
I have owned a number of these cars. This one is the best. Everyone comments how well this car drives and performs. My mechanic says it drives better and is a lot more solid than some cars he services with half the mileage. I baby my cars: I don't beat on them at all, and doing so, they take care of me.
In addition, both sets of Continental Extreme Contact tires are BRAND NEW! ($1100+ value) and rear brakes pads also BRAND NEW last month (Akebono Euro ceramic) and car was fully serviced (new synthetic oil, fluids, etc.) so...car is good to go. You could definitely drive cross country with this car today.
When these cars are properly maintained, they last. This car has tons of life left in it.
The only small issue is a small crease, dent and ding on the hood that came from hitting road debris. Sucks, but it is there, but barely noticeable. Incredible...someone hit some metal on the highway and flung it in my path. Hit the front between the grills then bounced up off hood. Grill inserts will also have to be replaced as many tabs were broken, so they don't sit in there firmly. And one wheel has a little curb rash from previous owner. Just have to mention. This is a 10 year old car. Sharp, clean, but not perfect.
So...if you want the most bang for your buck, the most luxury, the most performance, for the least amount of money, this is the car for you. I spent on average a $1000 a year to keep up with this car. The payoff was that it always worked perfectly, and is amongst the most fun and dependable cars I've owned. I will miss this car when it is gone....

Bangle urges auto design shakeup, says industry not innovating

Fri, 30 Aug 2013

Controversial designer Chris Bangle, the man behind the notorious E65 BMW 7-Series "Bangle Butt," has some rather sharp criticism for the current crop of automotive designers in an upcoming full-length interview with Automotive News Europe. The preview, posted on Automotive News, details parts of the interview, with the always vocal Bangle lamenting the state of modern automotive design.
"Even concept cars today simply anticipate the next production model coming down the line. Is this innovation? No. And at the end of the day this is what's preventing car design from moving into a new era." Controversial as Bangle's design philosophy may be, we can't help but think he has a point. His so-called "flame surfacing" at BMW and other stylistic elements had a huge influence on modern automotive design, although as the years have passed, there hasn't been much innovation on the same scale.
Interestingly, Bangle also mentions that he's been courted by a few manufacturers that wanted to install the American as the head of their design teams. He's flatly rejected them, telling ANE, "It's not something you can do part time, you have to do it with all your heart and soul or you're going to get it wrong."

BMW V8-powered Ford Model A is the definition of Hot Rod

Thu, 20 Jun 2013

Today, hotrodding has a pretty staid definition. Take one classic American car, add one classic American V8, sprinkle with tire smoke and you pretty much have every hot rod to roll out of a shop in the last 40 years. Mike Borroughs knows it wasn't always this way. Once upon a time, getting your bucket to go faster meant grabbing whatever parts were lazing about the yard, bolting them together with a bit of ingenuity and laughing your way down the quarter mile. It's in that spirit that Burroughs built his 1928 Ford Model A.
Rather than turn to the tired flathead or the common Chevrolet small block, Burroughs plucked a 4.0-liter V8 from a 1995 BMW 7 Series. With 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque, the engine has no trouble shuffling the old A around town. He had to build a custom chassis to get everything to cooperate, but the result is a 1,500-pound heathen that looks built to harass dry lake beds. You can check it out in the video below. Be warned, the soundtrack by Hanni el Khatib may not be safe for work - awesomeness of this caliber rarely is.

BMW has the first smart emergency system for motorcycles

Tue, May 3 2016

While cars and trucks have long had smart emergency systems to send help in the event of a crash (think services like OnStar), motorcycles have had to go without -- a scary thought if you've ever worried about wiping out miles away from help. That's where BMW might just save the day, though. It's introducing the first smart emergency tech for motorbikes, Intelligent Emergency Call, to give the two-wheel crowd a proper safety net. You can trigger it yourself, such as when you need to help a fellow motorist, but the real magic comes with its automatic responses. IEC's acceleration and lean angle sensors can not only tell if your bike falls or crashes, but time the call for help based on severity. A bad accident will call for help immediately, for instance, while a gentler incident provides a delay so that you can cancel the call. If things are dire enough for that call to go out, it'll send your ride's position at the same time. Don't expect to see this system in North America, at least not any time soon. IEC will first launch in Germany sometime in early 2017, and it'll spread to other European countries soon afterward. There's no mention of availability in other countries, unfortunately. However, you may well see equipment like this become widespread among bike makers eager to one-up the competition.Related Video: This article by Jon Fingas originally ran on Engadget, the definitive guide to this connected life.
