1974 BMW 2002

118,000 miles

NO RESERVE

This car was recently restored by the owner who was obviously passionate about BMWs. I have been commissioned to evaluate and sell this car by his widow. I was trained by BMW of North America, am a BMW certified master mechanic who has worked professionally on BMWs for over 25 years. My first of many BMWs was a 1974 2002.

After thoroughly looking at the receipts and the car itself, I have found the following positive points:

  1. The frame up paint job is beautiful.

  2. The repairs to the floorboards and rear shock well were done professionally; no rust left behind; everything welded.

  3. The only visible rust is the typical rust along the bottom edge of the passenger door only (replacement door included; see #4 below).

  4. This car comes with extra parts:  2 front doors that seem to be rust-free, window regulators, front vent windows and frames, driver side mirror, one door window, oil filter, and service manuals.

  5. Except for the driver seat seams that are worn, upholstery is in great shape (see photos).

  6. Listed below are all the new or fairly new parts and modifications that were installed:

  • Weber DGAV 32/36 carburetor

  • Short shift kit

  • Removable moon roof

  • Rear shocks

  • ANSA muffler and straight pipe to replace resonator

  • Lowered suspension

  • H & R rear springs - progressive rate 29-201R

  • New front springs

  • Bosche high output coil

  • Pertronix electronic ignition

  • Bottle cap 14" wheels from later model 3-series

  • Pirelli HP 185/60 tires

  • Zender front air dam

  • Interstate battery and cables

  • Headliner

  • Door gaskets

  • Most window gaskets

  • Vacuum gauge - mounted to firewall

  • Everything on interior that is needed for air conditioning (no compressor, condenser or hoses)

  • Emergency brake cables

  • Carpet

  • Most metal brake lines and some rubber lines

  • Front brakes

  • Rear brakes

  • Dashboard

This car handles really well, tracks well, feels very tight, starts and runs great. (no smoke)

Even though it shifts perfectly, the transmission output and layshaft bearings are noisy. I believe the owner planned on replacing this 4-speed with a 5-speed transmission.

The interior light switches are missing.

There may be other improvements that I have not spotted.

If I didn't have so many BMWs myself, this car would not be listed on Ebay :) It would be in my garage!

Payment and delivery:

Non-refundable deposit of $500 required to be paid within 48 hours of end of auction through Paypal. Deposit will be credited toward price of car. Payment (by certified check or cash only) must be made and car picked up within 10 days after auction closes.

NO RESERVE

GOOD LUCK!

The Bilenkin Vintage is a retro-Russian coachbuilt BMW

Wed, Dec 2 2015

If you want to add some retro Russian style to your E92 BMW 3 Series, the coachbuilt Vintage by Bilenkin Classic Cars is probably your best (and only) option. The coupe's shape takes inspiration from vehicles of the Communist era, but this bespoke machine's design gets even crazier on the inside. The company's website shows that Bilenkin already has experience restoring classic cars, but this design. That experience is on display here. The stylists do a masterful job of hiding the BMW donor at the front, and the two big headlights and low-mounted, chrome bumper seem to take inspiration from old Volgas. In a fantastic touch, lengths of chrome also run through the door handles down the side to accentuate the rear. The back might be the styling's best angle because of the way the fins step down over two tiers to create the taillights. While the exterior focuses on mixing vintage looks with modern underpinnings, the interior cossets the occupants in opulent trim that features gold and diamonds. Bilenkin upholsters one example in its photos (above right) with paisley fabric, teal trim, and a frosted gearshift. The company also has one with a more traditional look that combines brown leather, wood, and crimson carpets. The Vintage recently debuted at the 2015 Dubai International Motor Show, but Bilenkin doesn't go into much detail about the vehicle's mechanical specs. According to the company's site, "it is intended to embody elegance and style along with the principle 'Sheer Driving Pleasure.'" The retro design certainly achieves the first part of that goal, while the BMW bones probably deliver the latter as well.

Hyundai poaches another BMW M exec to run high-performance N division

Fri, Mar 2 2018

Hyundai has poached a third executive for its N high-performance division from the ranks of BMW's M department. Thomas Schemera, a 31-year BMW veteran, will head the High Performance Vehicle & Motorsport Division that Hyundai just inaugurated on March 1. Schemera's job will be to "oversee strategy, product planning, sales and marketing for the new division." He will make the most of the transfer from Hyundai Motorsport to the road cars developed by the N division, and work to boost the brand. Schemera has the same boss at N that he did at M: Albert Biermann, the first M exec Hyundai snagged in 2015. After Biermann came Fayez Abdul Rahman, installed at the Genesis brand, who had previously developed platforms for the BMW 7 Series, X models, and M vehicles. Rahman spent the last phase of his BMW tenure in charge of M Equipment, M Sport Packages, and BMW Individual. Although he's undoubtedly busy with his VP job in charge of Genesis architecture development, we hear Hyundai plans to develop some kind of "N Sport" appearance and performance items for release later this year — a middle step in the same vein as M Sport and Audi S-line — and Rahman could certainly help. Schemera brings proven chops when it comes to moving standard and specialty hi-po offerings; as VP in charge of sales and dealer development in China, Schemera oversaw a four-fold increase in BMW and M sales in the four years from 2005-2008. He ended his run as head of BMW M and BMW Individual in the Americas. Although there's but one N product for sale now, the slate is full, and Hyundai looks ready to spend the time and money to seize every opportunity. BMW on the other hand, might soon turn into that tormented significant other regarding its M personnel: "So ... why did you let Hyundai like your Instagram post? Do you like Hyundai? Do you follow them back?!" ROEV lets you use multiple charging networks with one account

Thu, Nov 19 2015

It may be a textbook case of a first-world problem, but any EV driver who doesn't want to carry two or three plug-in vehicle charging station cards when one would do is about to get a little smile on their face. This morning at the LA Auto Show, the new ROEV Association was announced that will let EV drivers carry just the one card. While you would think the all-caps ROEV stands for something, none of the pre-announcement materials nor the website explain it that way. Instead, it seems to just be a play on rove, which makes a lot of sense. There are three charging networks involved in ROEV: Blink, ChargePoint, and EVgo. Conveniently, these are the three largest in the US and have a combined 17,500 public chargers across the country. If you've got an account with one of these three networks, once ROEV goes into effect (expected in the spring of 2016), you'll be able to use that card at any participating charger without signing up for another account. Your personal details are kept private, ROEV says, and the companies coordinate behind the scenes to make it work. Pricing details were not disclosed. Besides the three main charging networks, two automakers are also founding members of ROEV: BMW and Nissan. ROEV says that Audi and Honda have also have already joined the Association and the organization wants to pull in all EV stakeholders to make electric vehicle charging easy. Fans of EV technology will note that ROEV has nothing to do with promoting either the CHAdeMO or the SAE Combo (CCS) fast charging standard. The Leaf is a CHAdeMO car while the i3 uses CCS, for example. The charging networks, of course, provide both kinds of plugs and don't promote one over the other. Tesla and its Supercharger network are not involved in ROEV, but Tesla drivers can, of course, participate in ROEV.
