1969 Bmw 1600 California Black Plate on 2040-cars
Los Angeles, California, United States
See more pictures here: This is an original (almost) rust free California Black plate car. The car is ORIGINAL. All the numbers match and other than the center console (pictured) there have been no modifications to the car.
The car was purchased from Oceanview Motors in Santa Monica California in 1969. I bought the car from the original owner in 1997 in Pasadena California.
The mileage is unknown as the speedo cable snapped several years ago. However the car has not been driven beyond my immediate neighborhood since then. When the cable snapped the odometer was reading appx 103k. If I had to guess it has about 5k more than that.
Engine: Runs strong, not powerful...its a small motor...but it runs strong. Original Carb rebuilt 3 years ago. Radiator replaced 4 years ago. Water pump and thermostat and all hoses replaced last week. The air pump is disconnected and could use a new bracket...or just removal.
Transmission: Original. The synchros and gears are in perfect working order. I clutch does not slip and feels great, but I cannot remember when it was last replaced.
Electrical: there are a few gremlins here. The interior lighting does not work. The gas guage does not work. The heater motor is dead and is disconnected. All exterior lights work and the battery is brand new.
Brakes: Perfect.
Tires: 90% tread all around.
Suspensions: All bushings replaced 5 years ago with stock bushings. Shocks also replaced 5 years ago with stock (Boge?) shocks.
Exterior: The pictures should tell the story here. The paint is original and is DONE! It needs paint or a garage immediately (this is the main reason that I am letting it go). There are two small dents in the hood. One fist sized dent on the front fender. There is no bondo, no rust, and no evidence of any body work ever. One of the windshield wipers needs reassembly. The antenna needs new mounting clips.
Interior: The interior is rough...as you can see. All the parts are there but it needs a complete overhaul. The car does come with a new carpet kit (still in the box) ready for install, and the original radio and center console which would need to be re-assembled and installed. The windshield rear-view mirror is broken and needs to be replaced. The door mirrors look good but both tend to go loose and need to be tightened up often.
Overall: This is an AWESOME car for someone with the time and resources to finish it off.
The car is located in North Los Angeles and is available for test drives. Just send me an email.
I have not listed a price as I am going to sell it to the highest bidder on Ebay in a no reserve auction. However, please feel free to email me if you have would like to make an offer before the close of the auction. I have decided it is time to let her go. The car will be sold at the close of the auction. |

BMW exec says public chargers not important for EV success
Fri, Jan 31 2014What has BMW learned from years of electric vehicle test programs and working with Mini E drivers and the ActiveE Electronauts? According to BMW board member Herbert Diess, it's that public charging is not an important piece of the puzzle of making EVs a success. The way those early EV drivers used their vehicles told BMW that, "public infrastructure is not really very important because most people are charging their cars at home," Diess recently told Wards Auto. It's a message we've heard before. Diess' personal experience fits with this conclusion, he said. After driving his company's new i3 city EV for over a year, "not once have I touched public charging." Of course, the i3 does let the driver search for public charging stations and BMW has a partnership with ChargePoint, and Diess is not hinting that BMW is totally against the idea of public charging. Still, Diess' comments are not likely to find a warm welcome with everyone in the EV scene. An August 2012 UCLA study titled "Financial Viability Of Non-Residential Electric Vehicle Charging Stations" (PDF) clearly states: Adoption by consumers will largely be a function of the electric vehicle charging options available. Studies show that most EV charging currently takes place in the home (Carr 2010). Even so, in order for EVs to gain widespread consumer adoption, it is critical for an infrastructure of electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSEs) to exist outside the home. Even BMW's own electric drivers have been sending mixed messages. In 2010, a study of Mini E drivers found that 87.5 percent said a public charging infrastructure is necessary, though 75 percent later said they could manage without such a network.
Watch two championship-winning DTM cars from BMW go head-to-head
Mon, 06 May 2013BMW recently had a little fun with two of the company's past DTM champions. Roberto Ravaglia and Bruno Spengler, winners of the 1989 and 2012 championships, respectively, both showed up at the world-famous Hockenheimring with their title-winning cars. The two swapped seats, with Ravaglia taking the helm of Spengler's BMW M3 DTM racer and Spengler sliding behind the wheel of Ravaglia's first-generation M3 racer in the classic BMW Bank livery, and headed for the track. Spengler got a 23 second head start in the first-gen M3 with Ravaglia chasing behind.
It didn't take long for the older hotshoe to sort out his new ride and close the gap. The short clip below follows the two as they make their way around the circuit, but the really interesting portion comes when the pair begin discussing what they like and don't like about each other's machines. You can check out the full video below for yourself.
BMW planning Zhi Nuo Chinese sub-brand, may export models
Sat, 06 Apr 2013Automakers continue to pour big money into the developing market that is China, and new sub-brands born of joint ventures with domestic partners crop up on what seems like a weekly basis. The latest? According to reports, BMW and its Chinese ally Brilliance are forming a new sub-brand called Zhi Nuo ("The Promise") that will likely rely on existing or older BMW products as a basis for new models.
Previous reports had indicated that the sub-brand could build its offerings based on an older 3 Series model (presumably the E90 series), but newer rumors have the X1 crossover (shown) factoring in. The Zhi Nuo brand could receive its official unveiling as soon as later this month at the Shanghai Motor Show.
Perhaps most interestingly, Automotive News Europe reports that the automaker's ambitions for Zhi Nuo may extend beyond China's borders. It's not clear what markets BMW may be eying, but executives admit the company hasn't ruled out Europe.
