1987 Volvo 740 Turbo Sedan (744T) in very good condition and with rare (for this model) manual transmission and only 82,xxx miles!

I will be completely honest with you about this car as I want this car to go to a happy home and I don't want to deal with any complaint from you as a buyer.

This is a west coast car that I had transported to Minnesota where I have since done extensive work to bring this car up to the very good mechanical condition it is now in.  The body/under-body are very dry since this is a west coast vehicle and has only been driven in the snow a few times, after which it was washed (including the underbody) and stored in a heated garage.  It's a non-smoker car, heated garage kept, and very well maintained.  The first owner was a wealthy person in California and the owner before me was a Truck Driver who rarely drove the car.

I bought this car as a second car and as a project.  When I got the car it had a leaking head gasket (left, front), bad clutch throw-out bearing, rotted engine wiring harness, but ran very very well with no transmission issues what-so-ever.  Since my ownership I have done an extensive overhaul of most major systems and would drive this car from coast-to-coast without any hesitation.  This is the second 740 I have owned and this one is by far one of the best examples you will find.

Here is what has been done to this car:
  • Remanufactured Cylinder Head (from Clearwater Cylinder Heads), Head Gasket, Intake/Exhaust Studs/Bolts, Intake/Exhaust Manifold Gaskets, Valve Cover Gasket
  • Timing Belt, Idler Pulley/Tensioner, Water Pump, Fan Clutch, Harmonic balancer, Thermostat, all Coolant hoses
  • Sachs clutch kit (throw out bearing, clutch, etc), resurfaced OEM flywheel, rear main seal, clutch slave cylinder
  • Bilstein touring struts on front and rear, rear springs, front control arm bushing, strut mount/bushings
  • Brake flex lines on all wheels, rear rotors, pads, and calipers
  • PCV/Oil Separator Box, cleaned IAC valve, cleaned throttle body, cleaned fuel injectors and fuel rail, new fuel filter, new high pressure fuel pump, new fuel pump relay
  • Cardone remanufactured distributor, bosch distributor cap/rotor, plugs, wires, bosch ignition coil, bosch oxygen sensor, airbox thermostat
  • Engine mounts, transmission mount, rear differential pinion, rear differential cover gasket
  • Catalytic Converter, Cat-back OBX stainless steel exhaust
  • Late Model/updated complete Engine Wiring Harness (post 1988 design which does not rot)
  • Upgraded stereo with Kenwood Excelon Stereo (USB and AUX input), Alpine Speakers, Infinity Basslink subwoofer
  • New Bridgestone Serenity Plus Turanza tires (very nice premium tire over $700 installed)
  • Fresh Mobil 1 Synthetic oil change, fresh brake fluid, transmission fluid, rear differential oil
  • All engine compartment hoses
What needs/could be done:
  • Air conditioning - currently does not work, but includes all parts and new belt (not installed).  The compressor would switch on before I uninstalled the belt, but I have no idea what is wrong with the system or if it has been converted.
  • Oil Pan Gasket - this is starting to leak on the right side (the side the engine is angled to) and could use replacement.  I got a quote from a local Volvo mechanic for $200 to replace the gasket and refill with fresh Mobil 1 and oil filter.  I don't notice low oil between oil changes, so the leak is very slow but can be seen on the right engine mount.
  • Occasional brake squeal on right side (passenger) - I had the rotors/pads cleaned up and calipers greased and the issue seems to have subsided.  The shop noted that all brakes are in good condition so it could be a temperature related even based on the compound of the pads.
  • Paintless dent removal -  there are shallow/wide dents on the front and rear right doors.  I am not sure how they got there, but they are certainly shallow enough with no creasing so they could be removed for a very small amount of money.  There is also on in the trunk lid face, not sure if this could also have PDR treatment or if it would be cheaper to replace the whole trunklid for ~$150 by getting a part on HollanderParts.com.
There are your normal old-Volvo body panel rattles when going over bumps, but no suspension creaks and all of the rubber suspension bushing appear to be in good condition.  The car starts right up (and I mean, right up), runs very nice, pulls strong, no smoke.  The transmission shifts as any M46 transmission could, they are not known for their refinement but are pretty robust and this one is in very good condition with no grinds or hard shifts.  The brake pedal is firm, the heat blows hot, all the lights on the dash function, it's a very nice example of a 26 year old Volvo.  Did I mention this one even has a Driver Side Airbag?

The headliner is in good shape with a fully operational sunroof with no leaks.  There are some interior panels that have a few bubbles and also on the vertical interior panels from the rear deck lid to the roof, I am guessing from being in the heat for so many years.

Please look at the pictures and contact me if you'd like a link to more photos and a video of the car, ask questions as much as possible, and make an offer I can't refuse.  Thanks very much for looking!

Volvo developing new three-cylinder engine family

Mon, 25 Aug 2014

Pop the hood on a Volvo of recent vintage and you'll find four-, five-, six- and even eight-cylinder engines. But the Swedish automaker is downsizing its engines over the coming years. The new XC90, set to be revealed later this week, will use a new family of four-cylinder engines (like the one pictured above). But that's not even the end of it as emerging reports speak of a new three-cylinder engine family in the works.
The new 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine will, according to reports, help Volvo further cut its carbon emissions in line with constricting regulations in markets like Europe and Australia. There won't be quite as many versions as the four-cylinder range, which will include gasoline and diesel versions in varying states of tune, but the three-pot motor is tipped to be employed in vehicles as large as the S60 and its stablemates. Larger than that, however, and the three-cylinder engine apparently just doesn't have the necessary torque.
Expect the new three-cylinder engine to be introduced sometime later this decade, after the four-cylinder's introduction in 2016. The three-cylinder engine is also set to form the building block of an even more efficient hybrid propulsion system in the future, enabling this new engine family to stay relevant through 2025.

Volvo to shake off Ford ties with new platforms, engines

Sat, 23 Feb 2013

It would seem Volvo is finally getting around to throwing all of Ford's things out of the apartment. Automotive News reports the Swedish automaker is preparing to unleash a range of new engines as well as a fresh platform designed entirely in house. The powerplants include an all-new four-cylinder engine set to bow before the end of this year before arriving in the US by 2014. Shortly thereafter, the world should get its first glimpse at the next-generation XC60, which will the company's first model to make use of the Volvo scalable platform architecture (SPA). US buyers can expect to see that machine on their roads by early 2015.
The next V70 and S80 will also use the SPA, though those models will carry V90 and S90 designations when they hit dealer floors. But that doesn't mean Volvo has completely weened itself off of Ford technology. The V40 will continue to ride on Ford bones until the model's next chassis can be co-developed between Volvo and Geely.

2015 Volvo XC90 is the Swedish future

Tue, 26 Aug 2014

It's been months since the Concept XC Coupe debuted at the Detroit Auto Show, Volvo's last show car previewing its all-new 2015 XC90. But the production model is finally here after years of development, and it signals the future of the Swedish automaker with its Scalable Product Architecture modular platform and cutting-edge new engine family.
The 2015 XC90 carries all-new styling, but is still familiar up front, with the company's logo slashing diagonally through its prominent, upright grille. Like the concept, it carries T-Shaped LED running lights through the headlights. The company calls them the "Thor's Hammer" design, an evocative designation that we think is fantastic. Under that new front end is a choice of two quite powerful, but very efficient powertrains. The standard XC90 gets a 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged engine with all-wheel drive making an impressive 316 horsepower. Or if buyers want to be a little greener and more powerful, there is the XC90 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid with the same engine, albeit augmented with an electric motor to produce a staggering 400 hp.
The exterior styling is crisp, if not quite as sensual as Volvo's latest concepts, but we think the interior is the real star here, with a dashboard that looks like it came out of a Herman Miller catalog and a unique vertically oriented infotainment screen integrated into its center stack, perhaps taking a cue from Tesla. If the cabin feels as good as it looks, we think a lot of sales are going to be won inside.
