The Brick! 1993 Volvo 240 Wagon, Third Seat, Security System, 150,444 Mi Clean! on 2040-cars
Skokie, Illinois, United States
This is something I’m used to saying about shoes, but now I find myself in the bizarre position of needing to say it about Volvos: I'VE OVER-BOUGHT!! Here’s the story…
I’ve been driving Volvo 240 wagons exclusively for many years now. The wagon I’ve been driving for several years now has started to fall apart a bit, so I decided it would be easiest to simply buy a “new” 1993 wagon and demote my current 1993 wagon to mule – using it only to haul things. So I acquired this beautiful wagon from Massachusetts. But here’s the thing… I’ve always, always wanted (1) to own a 240 sedan that matches my 240 wagon, and (2) to own one of the last 1600 Volvo 240s made, the famous, numbered 1993 240 “Classic Limited Edition”. By the time my “new” wagon – this one I’m selling – had been transported from Massachusetts to my home in the Chicago area, I had found a 240 Classic Limited Edition (#611!) sedan that also just happens to match my 240 wagon – all my dreams rolled into one car! Combine this with the Volvo S90 my husband acquired from St. Louis around the same time, and we have Volvo overload!
I’m going to include (below) the original listing that led me to purchase the car. In addition, I will say that I took the car to my Volvo mechanics (Rolf’s, in Evanston, Illinois, if you want to check them out – they’re tops!) and had them thoroughly inspect the car and fix all problems they found, totaling about $2300. (I’m happy to provide details on request.) In addition, the car has a Viper security system with two remotes as well as an after-market roof rack and after-market radio/CD player. One thing that didn’t get done was the center console housing is broken on the right side (next to the passenger seat; see photo) and the side mirror control on that side doesn’t work. Also, the lock on the rear driver’s side door doesn’t seem to respond with the rest of the locks when the driver’s door is locked or unlocked. The lock functions fine, but only manually. It's a lovely car, but we only have room for three cars, so last in first out! Here's the original listing that led me to the car:
THE BEST OF THE LAST THIS 240 Wagon exemplifies why these very collectible daily drivers have become so desirable. This 2 owner exceptionally clean car in and out has only been driven 9,500 miles in the past ten years by a well-respected Metro North Boston repair facilities owner/tech’s wife. As you can imagine the previous owner kept this one in excellent mechanical condition using only original factory Volvo replacement parts. The timing belt and water pump were replaced 4,000 miles ago @ 146,220 miles. Everything is operational on this car such as the odometer and fuel gauge, also the blower motor/fan has a strong 4 speed heating/defrost delivery system to work along with the A/C system (Volvo R134) to give real comfort in the coldest winters and the worst of the summer heat... Both map pockets on front door doors have just been replaced. The center console that houses the power mirror controls and heated seat switches are also in great condition. The center arm rest (rare) only 93 models is mint with drink holders. Due to fading over the last 20 years I elected to change all the lenses front and rear (head lights, tail lights, and both directional lenses). This 240 has every possible option from heated seats, power mirrors, power windows, and door locks, remote start, key less entry, two sets (key fob), 3rd row seating, roof rack, complete set of factory floor mats (equiv. to weather tech)... Clean Ma. Title and all service records. The only other car I've ever sold was my 1970 Datsun B210 many, many years ago (and I'm actually really sorry I didn't hang on to that one!), so if I haven't included some information, please don't hesitate to contact me with questions, or to contact Rolf's for their take on the car. Of course you're welcome to schedule a time to come by and look at the car in person and take a test drive. If you're far away, we're also happy to help facilitate shipping. Having recently shipped 3 cars ourselves, we've done the research and know what carriers are the best rated for the money. If you wonder why the weather looks so lovely in some of the photos I've included here, it's because 've had to rely on the original listing photos for the outside shots as the car is currently covered with snow, as you can imagine, though I've added some interior photos I just took today. Again, don't hesitate to contact me with questions or to schedule a test drive. And don't be afraid to make an offer! I promise we'll seriously consider all offers and answer promptly and politely! LOLVO Volvo V60 video leverages the power of cats on cars
Wed, 02 Jul 2014You know what we haven't posted in a long time? A very weird, car-related video. It's high time we address this failing.
As strange videos go, this one is truly bizarre. The two-minute clip focuses on the Volvo V60 R-Design, although you're not going to be learning anything about the car. Instead, you're going to be focused on the weird narrator (and the cat decals on the windows).
It's like someone taught the Swedish Chef to speak English, but with a ridiculous accent and a script that's been fed through Google Translate. The result is a weirdly cerebral voice speaking in a manner that borders on gibberish mixed with information about the car. We're particularly fond of, "In accordance with Volvo tradition... the car... is... of course... furnished, with an inside." "Floor bibs," in reference to the floor mats, was an office favorite, as well.
Volvo XC40 and C40 electrics get new motors, more horsepower, longer range
Tue, Jan 17 2023Late last year came reports of improved versions of the Volvo XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge for Europe. Configurators over the Atlantic showed there wouldn't just be new rear-wheel-drive models, but more battery, more range, and faster charging. The Swedes have finally published the official list of updates, the tweaks even better than the reportage and websites showed. First, the rumors are true, Volvo is back in the rear-driver game after 25 years on the sidelines. The automaker took the previous e-motors off the front axle, putting its in-house-developed, more powerful, and more efficient e-motor on the rear axle. This first use of the new e-motors bumps output from 228 horsepower to 235 horsepower in the RWD trims when combined with the 60-kWh standard range battery. That, plus cooling improvements for the pack, means the XC40 Recharge's range jumps from 425 kilometers on the WLTP cycle to 460 km (285 miles), the C40 Recharge's range going from 438 km to 476 km (296 miles). Plugged into a charger capable of at least 130 kW, refilling from 10% to 80% takes about 34 minutes. We specified "standard range battery" because another new treat is a second RWD trim: Volvo will plug its 82-kWh battery into the powertrain for those willing to pay. But wait, there's more: The big pack powers an even juicier e-motor making 248 hp. The added gumption boosts range in the XC40 Recharge to 515 km (320 miles), in the C40 Recharge to 533 km (331 miles). And again, improved cooling permits uprated charging speed of 200 kW, cutting the run from 10% to 80% SOC to approximately 28 minutes. Dual-motor variants make the change to asymmetric output as revealed before, giving up two 201-hp e-motors for a new 156-hp motor on the front axle and that in-house 248 hp motor on the rear. In conjunction with better cooling, the XC40 Recharge Twin Motor climbs to 500 km (311 miles) of range on a charge, a 62-km hike, the C40 Recharge Twin Motor to 507 km (315 miles), a 56-km enhancement. Marginal gains also come from a set of more aerodynamic 19-inch wheels. The updated twin-motor siblings are expected to enter production in May, the single-motor versions in the fall. We only get the Twin Motor models here. If our variants reflected the same range extensions as in Europe, the 14% rise for the XC40 Recharge would give our car a 255-mile range, the C40 a 12% boost to 254 miles of range.
1969 Volvo P1800 gasser wins 2021 Hot Wheels Legends Tour
Mon, Nov 15 2021Hot Wheels has announced the winner of the 2021 Legends Tour: it's a 1969 Volvo P1800 gasser owned by England-based Lee Johnstone. Built from a bare shell, the V8-powered hot rod will join the toy manufacturer's catalog of 1/64-scale model by the end of 2022. Designers and key figures from the automotive industry chose the P1800 after looking at contestants from 11 countries on five continents. The list of finalists also included a 1991 Porsche 911 turned into a Baja race car, a 1969 Dodge Charger fitted with extra-wide tires and powered by a Richard Petty V8 engine tuned to 740 horsepower, and a 1968 Mercedes-Benz 250S called High Class that rides on a frame sourced from a 1984 Chevrolet S-10. Substantial skill and originality went into each build, but Johnstone's hot rod stood out above the rest. "The Volvo Gasser is a wonderful expression of authenticity, creativity, and most importantly garage spirit," said Ted Wu, the vice president and global head of design for vehicles at Mattel. Wu was one of the panelists that picked the P1800. Johnstone explained his P1800 was little more than a rusty shell that was too far gone to restore when he acquired it. Instead of scrapping it, he decided to build it into a gasser powered by a 454-cubic-inch V8 plucked from the Chevrolet parts bin and supercharged to develop around 600 horsepower. Fitted with dual four-barrel carburetors, and nicknamed "Ain't no Saint," it reportedly runs a 10.01-second quarter mile at 133 mph. Johnstone regularly races the P1800 in the United Kingdom with help from his three daughter and his wife, Sue. Hot Wheels is scheduled to release the P1800 in late 2022, Autoblog learned from a spokesperson. Turning a car into a toy is a surprisingly lengthy and meticulous process that involves collecting numerous photos, converting them into sketches (and, if needed, tweaking some of the proportions to better fit the 1/64 scale), making a 3D digital model using a software called Freeform, and printing test cars.
