1981 Volkswagen Rabbit Diesel 4-door Hatch Mk1 Vw 5-speed on 2040-cars
Oakland, California, United States
You're looking at a 81 Volkswagen Rabbit 4-door hatchback. The car has a clean title and is in great condition- I'd drive this thing anywhere. Extensive work has gone into the car making it reliable I was planning to have the car repainted, but now that looks like it'll be your responsibility- should you decide to purchase this great little car. I hate to see it go! The previous owner hadn't had the car very long, but he told me that the car was originally owned by a Stanford professor, who commuted in it for a long time. I was surprised by the 750,000 miles on the odometer, but he told me that the gauge cluster had been replaced at some point, and that wasn't the original mileage. Judging from the condition of the car, this seems like a reasonable claim. The car starts easily, runs smoothly and is incredibly reliable. In the ~8,000 miles that I've put on it, it's delivered an average 45 mpg, with a high of 52. Here's a quick rundown of the cars details. Engine/Transmission -1.6L Diesel. According to the vehicle records, a rebuilt cylinder head was installed about 12,000 miles ago. -Four new motor mounts. Mounts were powder-coated black. -Recent oil/filter change- synthetic oil used. -Recent transaxle oil change. -Recent fuel filter change. -Recent valve adjustment -New timing belt, timing belt idler. -Powder-coated (black) the timing belt cover. -New water pump/gasket/o-rings. -New radiator hoses. -Cooling system flushed and refilled. -A/C delete with custom alternator bracket and tensioner, powder-coated black. -New alternator belt -Fairly new alternator -Two new axles/CV joints. -Completely rebuilt shifter assembly. All new bushings. Upgrade to a delrin bushing on the main shift rod. -New electric fan switch. -New valve cover gasket. Body -The paint is peeling on one side in particular, but there is no significant rust. -The body is straight, but has a few dings here and there. -New locking gas cap. -New Bosch wiper blades. Interior -Aftermarket mechanical (more accurate) temperature gauge. -New Sony 60wx4 receiver -New Retrosound front speakers -New Infinity rear speakers. -New package tray straps. -GTI steering wheel with new OEM GTI steering wheel center. -Headliner, seats and carpet are in excellent condition. People frequently compliment how good it looks inside. -With the AC delete, the evaporator core and all lines were removed. -As nice as the interior is, the dashboard is in sorry shape. The carpet over the dash covers as many cracks as a dry lake bed. Also, the previous owners have attached the face of the dash with non-factory screws. -Hand brake assembly powder-coated satin black. Suspension -New strut cartridges. -New strut bearings/mounts. -New front wheel bearings, with new circlips. -New rear wheel bearing (1) and grease seals. Repacked bearings with sythetic grease. -New ball joints. -All new control arm bushings. -Recent alignment with 1-year warranty at Wheel Works. -Powder-coated black strut housings. -Powder-coated black control arms. -Powder-coated black the steering knuckles (while the bearings were out). -Powder-coated black the clamps for the rear control arm bushings. -German-made Borrett 14" alloy rims -Only about 10,000 miles on tires. ~80% tread left. Brakes -Powder-coated disc brake splash shields -Fairly fresh front pads. -Rear shoes are at 75% -4 new anti-rattle clips installed. -Two new parking brake cables installed. I had planned on doing it anyway, but if you'd like the car converted to run biodiesel I can take care of that for a few hundred more. Conversion includes new viton fuel lines, secondary fuel filter addition and a couple extra fuel filters. That's about it, but I've probably left some things out. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to shoot me an email.

Volkswagen forced to sell stake in Suzuki
Mon, Aug 31 2015The six-year-long failed marriage between Volkswagen and Suzuki has finally come to an end. Almost. An arbitration panel in London issued its final verdict which, according to a VW press release, cleared Suzuki in terminating the agreement, so VW now needs to get rid of its 19.9-percent share. However, the tribunal's decision said VW performed all of its obligations and Suzuki didn't – the Japanese carmaker should have given VW last-call rights for a delivery of diesel engines, but failed to. The breach opens Suzuki up to damage claim, but so far VW only says it reserves the right to sue. Now that Suzuki has an outside investor to provide funds it meant to get from VW, perhaps both can get back to their reasons for being. The press release is below. Ruling in arbitration proceedings: Cooperation between Volkswagen and Suzuki deemed terminated - Arbitral tribunal confirms Volkswagen met contractual obligations and finds that Suzuki has ordinary right to terminate agreement based on reasonable notice - Volkswagen to dispose of its 19.9 percent stake in Suzuki and expects positive effect on Company's earnings and liquidity from transaction - Arbitrators also find that Suzuki breached its contractual obligations to Volkswagen under the agreement and that Volkswagen has right to claim damages Wolfsburg, 30 August 2015 - An arbitral tribunal in London has announced its ruling in the dispute between Suzuki Motor Corporation and Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft. As a result, cooperation between the two parties is deemed terminated. The arbitrators confirmed that Volkswagen met its contractual obligations under the cooperation agreement and found that Suzuki has terminated the agreement upon reasonable notice. Volkswagen will therefore now dispose of its 19.9 percent stake in Suzuki and expects a positive effect on the Company's earnings and liquidity from the transaction. The arbitral tribunal also confirmed that Suzuki breached its contractual obligations to Volkswagen under the agreement and that Volkswagen has the right to claim damages. "We welcome the clarity created by this ruling. The tribunal rejected Suzuki's claims of breach and found that Volkswagen met its contractual obligations under the cooperation agreement. Nevertheless, the arbitrators found that termination of the cooperation agreement by Suzuki on reasonable notice was valid, and that Volkswagen must dispose of the shares purchased.
VW redoes A-ha's 'Take On Me' music video
Wed, 18 Sep 2013Volkswagen has been responsible for its fair share of witty, clever commercials. "Tiny Vader" might be the most popular, but somehow, we think this newest spot will find a big audience. VW delivers not so much a cover, but a reimagining, of 1980s Norwegian pop band A-ha's famous music video for "Take On Me."
The original opens with an animated motorcycle race, which is revealed to be part of a comic book. VW's version replaces the motorcycle with a Passat, which strikes us as an oddly sober choice when there are cars like the GTI and Beetle in VW's portfolio. But never mind that - take a look down below for the entire 46-second spot. For reference, we've also included the original music video. And if you aren't a fan of the musical stylings of A-ha, just think, VW's choice of 1980s music could have been much worse.
Touring the Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg
Mon, 23 Sep 2013Forgive the ribbon up top - this isn't so much of a Read This as a Look At This. Ran When Parked took a tour of the sprawling Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg, and while there's a spot of text about the different and unique vehicles on display in the rotating exhibits, it's largely the collection of pictures of odd, one-off VW-badged cars and vans that excites. If you're a fan of the weird and wild, this is a post you'll want to look at.
As RWP points out, this is the larger, but less busy, museum targeted purely at Volkswagen products. The smaller AutoStadt museum, meanwhile, covers a much broader swath, with products from other Volkswagen Group members.
