1997 Passat B4v Tdi/glx Conversion. Beautiful Shiny Red Turbo Diesel Wagon! on 2040-cars

My red passat wagon started out as a vr6. Not really it's fault, kind of OPEC's and American policy makers, but regardless-- no one is really responsible for the family they are born into. Luckily this passat fell in with the right crowd (me) and was converted to a tdi. Now it is a beautiful example of a efficient, quick, and very comfortable tdi b4 passat.
The tdi I put in comes from Europe (Amsterdam, to be exact). It's called an AFN. Practically speaking it is very similar to the tdi engines that were made in 1996-2001 (ahu/alh), but it is better. This engine has stronger pistons, a better turbo, better injectors, and comes stock with more horsepower and torque (alh&ahu engines had 90hp stock. This one (afn) has 110hp stock). I've owned an all original tdi passat and I can really feel the difference in this engine. Conveniently, all replacement parts are easy to get in the USA. This is really a nice engine to swap in because of the added performance, and ease of maintenance.
This has turned out to be a really nice swap. Everything works, and works well. If you don't drive it like a teenager, it consistently gets 45 mpg. I know it could do better with some new tires. It goes when you want it to! And it's really comfortable with the heated seats. The interior is in pretty nice shape. It has mats, I just took them out so you can see the carpets, and to clean them. No leaks of any kind anywhere.
The exterior is in amazing shape. With the exception of the dent on the drivers side it's really straight. The paint is shiny! Absolutely no clear coat peeling, and zero rust anywhere. I tried to get pictures of the dents and bruises to honestly show condition. Other than the three pictured, this thing is in really, really good condition.
The engine and the engine bay are pretty clean. If you didn't know it was a conversion it would be really hard to tell that it wasn't stock. The ccv tube is a little leaky so where it attaches and below is oily and dirty, but other than that it looks pretty nice in there. I got clear fuel lines so if there's ever any issues with bubbles or leaking you'll be able to tell right away. Plus it's kind of fun to watch the fuel pulse through there.
New timing belt, roller, and tensioner. New air filter, fuel filter, and full synthetic mobile 1 oil and oil filter too. New valve cover gasket that does not leak (victor rienz). New transmission fluid. And more!
A little white smoke at startup when it's cold, but it goes away quickly and then no more smoke after that. This wagon really does hold 25 gallons of fuel. I've personally put 24.1 gallons in the tank. Usually I only fill it up half way because I don't use it often enough and I don't want the diesel siting that long.
Which brings me to why I'm selling it... I'm converting my 1984 Westfalia vanagon with the same engine and I'm almost done with it. With two kid haulers, one of the tdi's is redundant. I don't use this one enough as it is so I want it to go to someone who will use it, and enjoy it like it should be. I know I'm going to only drive my van when it's done; I don't want to see this beauty go to seed.
Obviously I have a huge amount of knowledge with this car and this conversion. It's kind of a unique thing, but very useable, and well done if I do say so myself. I'm willing to do a warrantee on it for 6 months or so, within reason (if a tire blows out, I'm not going to cover that, and etc.). If you buy this and live far away we'll have to work something else out. Anyway, if you're interested let's talk! Good hunting otherwise--

2015 Volkswagen GTI [w/video]

The 911 Of Hot Hatches Takes The Compact Game To New Levels
North American car buyers get a bit of a slap in the face when it comes to delivery schedules for new the Volkswagen Golf and pumped-up GTI models. We'll just repeat the old chestnut: It's worth the wait... even though it still stinks. This time around, Western Europe is taking deliveries of the new Golf as we speak, and GTI deliveries start between May and July. North America doesn't get the Mk7 Golf or GTI until about July of 2014.
So we approached our first drive of the new GTI with this chip on our shoulder: "You're making us wait? Well, then at least give us the exact car we'll be able to buy. No compromises, mein freund." And so it was that we extracted nearly all of our drive impressions from behind the wheel of what, for the United States, will technically be a model year 2015 two-door Volkswagen Golf GTI Performance with the standard six-speed manual.

Audi rumored to buy Alfa Romeo, officials deny it

Thu, 28 Mar 2013

For more than two years, Volkswagen has been making public statements about its willingness to buy Alfa Romeo and quadruple the Italian brand's sales, and for just as long, Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne has replied with some version of "Mr. Piëch, drop it." According to a report in Ward's Auto, all that jousting might be over: it claims that sources close to both Marchionne and Audi CEO Rupert Stadler admit that the two are in talks for Audi to buy not just Alfa Romeo, but a production plant in Italy. In fact, a final deal could possibly include partsmaker Magnetti Marelli.
Against that backdrop, a report by German news weekly Stern quotes a Fiat spokesmen as saying it doesn't comment on rumors and an Audi rep has said flatly that "There is no substance in the news." If a sale is being arranged, the timing would seem to point to how eager Fiat is to raise cash to complete its major initiatives. Even though Alfa Romeo continues to delay its return to the US, it just showed off the production version of the 4C at the Geneva Motor Show (shown above) and said that preferred Fiat dealerships here would get them. Then there's Alfa's recently concluded deal with Mazda to develop a roadster based on the next generation MX-5 Miata - a deal that would seem to help both the Italian and Japanese brands.
The monetary issues are troublesome, though. Fiat is taking a beating in the European market and its weak-kneed balance sheet is delaying gotta-have-it products like the Jeep Cherokee. Fiat has been talking to banks about getting money to buy the rest of Chrysler and those financial institutions have also raised issues about debt and cash reserves, and the nasty game of chess Fiat is playing with the United Auto Workers (and now the court system about the portion of Chrysler it doesn't own) could end up blowing another hole in Marchionne's plans. It is possible that this could finally have convinced Fiat to at least see how serious Audi's parent company, Volkswagen, is about buying Alfa Romeo. Or it could be just another rumor.

Volkswagen drops "GTi" lawsuit against Suzuki

Tue, 02 Oct 2012

Way back in 2004, Volkswagen took umbrage with Suzuki being granted permission to use the nameplate "SWIFT GTi" for a performance variant of its small-car offering (2012 equivalent seen here). Now, eight years and surely some very steep legal bills later, VW has finally dropped its claim against Suzuki.
The General Court of the European Union stated, back in March of this year, that Suzuki's GTi registration could not be confused with VW's "Golf GTI." Volkswagen had appealed that ruling, though has now reportedly called off the dogs. In fact, Germany's Die Welt reports that the appeal has been dead for several weeks now.
This news comes amongst continued arbitration acrimony between the two automakers, all revolving around VW's forced divestiture of nearly 20-percent stake it purchased in Suzuki some two years ago.
