1974 Karman Ghia Coupe MATCHING NUMBERS Just Completed Restoration NO RUST
This car has ZERO rust. How can I be so certain? Because she has just completed a complete, top to bottom, stem to stern, down to the nuts and bolts, frame-off-and-back-to-bare-metal restoration. Every square inch of the body has been inspected. If any rust was found, the section was replaced with steel. NOT fiberglass. Real steel, like it came from the factory. The edges are crisp and the curves are reminiscent of Marylin Monroe. Be sure to look at the picture of the bare metal nose. The body was then prepped and painted with a two-part epoxy primer. The base coat is Bahia Red, in accordance with the birth certificate issued from the Stiftung Automuseum in Wolfsburg, Germany. The clear coat is of the 2K (two-component) variety; which is chemically resistant, in case anything but the finest carnauba wax ever touches the finish. Both sides of the floor pans, as well as the wheel wells and door interior have been coated with a thin coat of truck bed liner. Afterwards, the wheel wells were painted the stock exterior color - appearing as it did when it rolled off the assembly line. Not only does this car have no rust, it will never rust again. The engine, whose serial number (AH443720) matches the frame, per the certificate issued by the Stiftung Automuseum, has been meticulously rebuilt to stock specifications. This includes new Mahle pistons and rings, cylinders, camshaft, lifters, heads and valves. That's all new -- not re-man or machined. The pistons and connecting rods have been balanced within 1 gram. This thing purrs. All the steering and suspension components are new, as is the clutch. New brake lines, master cylinder, calipers, disks, rotors, drums and cylinders. She even has a new car smell. The only modifications are pragmatic and reversible -- electronic ignition (dealing with points, gap, dwell and timing are are a thing of the past). Gone are the terrible little bullet fuses jammed where they cannot be seen. The electrical system has been hand-wired with an 18 circuit ATC fuse panel that is easily accessible. Just about every electrical component is on its own circuit. All the lights have been replaced with SuperBrite LEDs, so the gauges and turn signals can actually be seen. All the glass is rare, original, stock VW glass. The signal lenses are all original Hella, not reproductions. The interior upholstery is original, and in excellent condition considering its age. All the carpet has been replaced, as too the headliner and visors. The entire restoration process has been thoroughly and meticulously documented with nearly 200 photographs, as-built measurements and checklists. In each photograph is a slate containing the date and serial numbers, so there is no doubt that it is indeed the car in question. This documentation will be provided on a CD for the buyer, as well as the certificates from the museum. I find myself reluctantly parting with this beauty due to having an opportunity to purchase another car for my collection. Unfortunately, I find myself short on both cash and space in the garage, so something has to go. This could be the nicest Karmann Ghia for sale on the east coast. Jay Leno brings a rotary-powered VW Beetle to the garage
Mon, Aug 1 2016It takes something really unique or inventive to pique Jay Leno's interest. His show, Jay Leno's Garage, has featured everything from concours-worthy classics to completely custom, home-built machinery. How do you get Leno to feature one of more than 20 million Beetles on his program? Stick a turbocharged rotary engine under the hood. The Beetle's owner, Mario Markakis, swapped the car's stock flat four-cylinder for the Wankel engine from a 1990 Mazda RX-7 Series 5 Turbo. The engine's 250 horsepower are fed through a reinforced version of the Beetle's stock four-speed transmission. That's about five times the original engine's output. It works well, with the car putting down some impressive times at the drag strip. Markakis did most of the work to the Beetle in his garage. In addition to the engine swap, he's modified the car's brakes, suspension, and interior. Check out the video to hear all the details of this custom Wankel-powered Volkswagen. Skoda's next concept is a 300-mile electric SUV
Wed, Mar 29 2017If you thought Volkswagen wasn't serious about electric vehicles, think again. Its subsidiary Skoda will reveal an electric SUV concept called the Vision E at the Shanghai auto show in a few weeks. Not only is it the fourth all-electric concept shown by the VW group (following the I.D., I.D. Buzz, and Sedric), but it previews the electrified future of Skoda, which announced that it will have five pure EVs in its lineup by 2025. The Vision E is just as impressive as the company's electric ambitions, too. It boasts a roughly 310-mile range on a charge, and packs a motor that makes about 300 horsepower. The car will be capable of level 3 autonomy, which will allow it to operate autonomously on highways, in stop-and-go traffic, and to find parking spaces. Its top speed isn't amazing at around 111 mph, but it isn't a sports car. Rather, it's an "SUV coupe" similar to the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe. As such it has a more sedan-like back. The styling is also unique with full-width headlights and foglights, and another lighting element that extends from the front fender down the doors. The only obviously Skoda styling cue is the bulge down the center of the hood. The Vision E is also similar to the X6 and GLC Coupe in other ways. Its specs are quite close to those crossovers, particularly the Mercedes. It's a few inches shorter than the GLC Coupe, but it's an inch wider. It also makes the same amount of horsepower as the entry-level X6 and outguns the Mercedes by an impressive 59 horsepower. Of course, these are figures currently only projected and hypothetical since the Vision E is a concept, but it helps us get an idea of what this vehicle is like. So far, Skoda has only released sketches of the concept. We'll have to wait until the Shanghai show to see the real thing. Related Video:
Recharge Wrap-up: Mercedes gets F1 efficiency, EV charging in Vermont, VW e-Golf to use Bosch
Mon, Jul 14 2014Efficiency equals performance, especially in the case of Formula 1 racing. The Mercedes AMC Petronas team points to several key efficiency technologies it uses to get the most out of its cars. And if their utter dominance so far this season is testament to this relationship, perhaps we should pay attention. Mercedes highlights hybrid tech, turbocharging, aerodynamics, lightweight construction, tribology (both in making internal components and lubricants more slippery) and simulation as crucial to getting around the track faster than anyone else. These just happen to be some of the same things that make the cars we drive on public roads more fuel-efficient. Learn more in the press release below. It's a good read. Brammo, maker of sweet electric motorcycles, is teaming up with TEAM Industries to make drivetrains for electric vehicles. TEAM, which specializes in drivetrain technology, will also become an investor in Brammo as part of the partnership. "The electric vehicle market is a growth market," says TEAM CEO and President David Ricke, "and TEAM and Brammo will be providing a wide range of solutions for OEM manufacturers." Read more over at EV World. Vermont celebrated the installation of a new EV charging station as part of a Green Energy Corridor between Boston and Montreal. When finished, drivers will be able to make the whole trip in an EV with access to charging along the way. For $5, customers can charge their vehicle in about 30 minutes at the Red Hen Baking Company in Middlesex. There are currently only about 700 EVs on the road in Vermont. The state has a goal to get 90 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2050, and getting more EVs on the road is crucial to that mission. Vermont hopes that expanding the charging infrastructure will convince more people to go electric. Read more at Vermont Public Radio's website. For it's new e-Golf, Volkswagen will use Bosch chargers for home installation and ChargePoint stations at its dealerships. Bosch will have various 240-volt options for the home, and will also provide installation. e-Golf customers will also get a free ChargePoint membership, and will have access to the company's network of charging stations worldwide. The 2015 e-Golf goes on sale in the US later this year. Read more in the press release below.
