 2003 20th Anniversary GTI, Jazz Blue, #2395 of 4000 20ths produced, 1 of 1,000 in Jazz Blue

VW 1.8T (turbo) engine and 6 speed manual gearbox.
All receipts/records included with sale.

Car is in excellent mechanical condition, owned by a 45 year old, well-seasoned technician.

I purchased this car in November of 2010 at 177,740mi. I just had to have a Jazz Blue 20th!
The car was in need of some TLC and I've done my best to restore/upgrade/maintain this vehicle to an outstanding mechanical condition while improving the overall cosmetic condition, inside and out. To my knowledge car has had NO accident damage, nor are any repainted panels evident.

I've performed extensive upgrades/modifications to the vehicle for purposes of reliability, performance and handling. I own/operate a private shop that specializes in German performance, more specifically Porsche race cars. This car has been one of many projects of mine in the last three years.

I can honestly say, this car has been one of the most reliable, funnest daily drivers I've ever owned. The hatchback is incredibly convenient and it's tough to beat the styling, performance and practicality of the MKIV GTI. I enjoy a solid 23MPG City/28MPG HWY, while boasting ~270HP via a THOROUGH Frankenturbo F4T conversion.

In November, we used the vehicle to drive down to Gainesville, Florida and back. It was a comfortable drive, the power was super handy (#&$*^% semi-truck drivers!!) and we averaged 26-27MPG with some city driving. The round trip alone was a solid 22hrs. of seat time and we went all over the place while we were down there. It was fun to have my daily driver that far from home, knowing how reliable it's been. That was the 2nd of two road trips I've ever taken in the car, as I'm usually driving a diesel rig w/trailer when I travel.

This has proven to be a VERY reliable setup and it produces a solid 26psi. of boost ALL DAY.
The Frankenturbo setup and related upgrades have turned an otherwise "blah" daily driver into one hell of a fun car that yields great gas mileage!
FrankenTurbo is an awesome, grassroots company, mainly focused on VW 1.8T/2.0T platforms, Doug (the Owner) offers great customer support and is constantly researching data via his customers.
Performance package topped off with a custom tune by C2 Tuning, via Ben Gilman, Newport News (affiliated with Volks & Rings VW/Audi Specialists)
ALL tuning accompanied by a VAGCOM analyzer, very important, most owners who "modify" their VW don't even bother with this.

TRANSMISSION:
Rebuilt by AAMCO Transmissions, Chesapeake, Va. September 2010, just prior to purchase. - as funny as this sounds, the "local VW expert" was currently working at AAMCO.
This was a $2,500 rebuild and the clutch was replaced with a complete SACHS disk/press.plate at the same time.
Shortly after purchase, I changed the transmission lube to Redline 75W/90 "NS", and it's been a flawless relationship.
CV Axles are VERY expensive for a 6spd. MKIV, shortly after purchase, I removed & stripped down both axles, rebuilt with Redline CV grease, using new boots/clamps, axles torqued to specifications with new inner bolts/outer axle to hub bolts.

SUSPENSION:

When I purchased the car, it was in need of ALL suspension bushing replacement.
Shocks were replaced with new Bilstein "Sport" units, using a new set of H&R Sport/Lowering Springs.
This lowered the car another 1.2" and added a nice look to an already factory lowered vehicle.
All shock mounts, strut tops, bearings and seals were replaced at that time.
Ball Joints, Wheel Bearings, Control Arms (R32 bushings), Dog Bone/Motor/Trans. Mounts (recent) - all replaced.
Rear support axle was rebuilt about a year after purchasing vehicle, using new factory VW bushings.
Less than a year ago, the factory 18" "Aristo" wheels were stripped down and reconditioned by Auto Elite, Va. Beach.
Tires were replaced at the same time the wheels were restored with Kumho ECSTA4 All Season Performance, there is ~3K mi. on the tires.
This car is an absolute blast to corner-carve with.

BRAKES:

RED calipers, as delivered from VW on Audi TT, VW 337 and 20th AE GTI models
Front pads were replaced about two years ago and have plenty of pad remaining, rear pads are NEW.
Front rotors were replaced with ECS vented/slotted performance disks when front pads were changed.
Rear brake (hard) lines were replaced about a year ago, with factory lines, when one of them started leaking.

I cannot emphasize enough how the performance modifications, coupled with the slew of NEW parts on this vehicle make it a realiable, attractive and FUN vehicle to drive, with great mileage to boot! I've got well over my asking price wrapped up in this gem and it's a solid, performance inspired daily driver. It's also the least expensive 20th AE available on the East Coast, and undoubtedly the most mechanically sound. I challenge you to find another 20th AE GTI in like mechanical condition with similar upgrades.

PLEASE DO NOT contact me with a bunch of B.S. regarding "Blue Book Value" and such...if you're looking for a 20th AE GTI, you know they come at a premium.
It's not even remotely possible to duplicate this vehicle for anywhere near the asking price - it's tastefully modded, body/interior/wheels are FACTORY ORIGINAL.
Any mechanical/performance/suspension/exhaust modifications can be easily reversed if you prefer a 100% "stock" vehicle, but who does?

If you find yourself "troubled" over the 195K mi. on the odometer - get over it.  It's a modern German performance vehicle, with rebuilt transmission (172K mi.) and rebuilt engine due to timing belt failure (prev. owner @111K mi.) The suspension has been replaced, brakes have been serviced (even replaced the lines), the interior is NOT falling apart like EVERY 20th AE out there (unless it's been reupholstered like this one) and the wheels/tires appear as if they're right out of the box.

There is NOTHING that will REQUIRE you to spend any significant amount of $$$$$$$$ if you purchase this vehicle.  It has been my trusty daily driver/project car for 3.5 years this month, I've simply moved on with a new daily driver.

Vehicle has a FRESH detail, inside and out by a professional, recent oil/filter change, using Motul Synthetic (always), new Bosch Icon (bracketless) type wiper blade assemblies and new rear Pagid "Premium" brake pads. Some of the original parts related to this vehicle will be included with sale - I.E.: Engine Cover, Battery Box, Air Box, etc.

I am very flexible with regards to transporting of vehicle.  I can transport via personal diesel truck/enclosed trailer within a 300mi. radius for a reasonable fee to cover my expenses -or- can meet for exchange of vehicle.  I am NOT looking for trades, a partial trade is possible but I'm mainly looking to CA$H OUT as I have a new daily driver.
Vehicle is located in Chesapeake, Va. in a VERY convenient location, a straight 4mi. shot off I-64, Greenbrier exit.

Bentley considering diesel engine for new SUV

Wed, 05 Mar 2014

Turns out, in case you didn't know, the rich are just like regular people. They too are concerned about the environment, even when tooling around town in their super-luxurious Bentleys. So the automaker is weighing the idea of offering a diesel engine in its SUV offering, which could help satisfy customers' demands for more fuel-efficient engines.
Chairman and CEO Wolfgang Schreiber told Autoblog in a roundtable interview at the Geneva Auto Show that the automaker is researching whether or not a diesel engine makes sense for the brand. Bentley, owned by the Volkswagen Group, could in theory use a diesel engine from anywhere in the Volkswagen Group family. We at Autoblog have hopes they'll revive the V10 TDI used in the VW Touareg until 2010, but ever-stricter emissions laws would likely make that problematic.
But rich people aren't so much like us that they'll be worried about petty things like pricing. Schreiber admitted the diesel engine could be a $15,000 option, which he said customers would probably find "acceptable." Given that the cheapest Bentley today starts at $177,000, typical customers probably won't be diddling around worrying about an extra 15 grand.

VW to relax ambitious US sales targets?

Fri, 16 May 2014

The Volkswagen brand sold 407,704 cars last year, a 6.95-percent decline compared to 2012, and it's down a further 8.36 percent through the end of April 2014 compared to this time last year. In order to to put the sales football between its Strategy 2018 goal posts, the brand would need to add 100,000 more sales every year to achieve the lofty 800,000-unit target. Coming to grips with how unreasonable that is, VW US CEO Michael Horn has said, "For now, we have to have realistic targets."
The reasons for the brand's slow-down are imprecise, but lots of folks are throwing lots of reasons around. Last November, VW Group Chairman Ferdinand Piech told Bloomberg, "We understand Europe, we understand China and we understand Brazil, [but] we only understand the US to a certain degree so far." Analysts say the brand hasn't had midsize and compact SUV offerings, especially an overdue retail version of the CrossBlue, and the ones it does have are priced too high for their segments. It "didn't introduce enough new engines, or alternative technologies or model variants" for the Passat and Jetta. It devoted so many resources to China that the US market suffered. It was being outspent two-to-one on advertising by competitors. Its J.D. Power dependability ratings aren't high enough to overcome its past. It "has never really taken the US customer seriously." And so on.
There's still no official admission of defeat concerning the target, but reading between the lines there are some VW execs that appear to accept it won't happen short of some deus ex machina. Still,

Tanner Foust checks out his new VW Beetle GRC rally car

Thu, 11 Sep 2014

Racing driver and Top Gear USA host Tanner Foust is a very busy guy. After all, he's competing in rounds of both Global Rallycross series and FIA World Rallycross Championship, not to mention his TV duties. However, we probably shouldn't feel too sorry for him, because his job puts him behind the wheel of some truly crazy machinery.
Case in point is his latest ride in Global Rallycross - the Volkswagen Beetle GRC. The German company claims that this all-wheel drive Bug makes around 540 horsepower from its 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and can shoot to 60 in under 2 seconds. Plus, if this video is any indication, this Volkswagen sounds like a machine gun when throwing revs at idle, and it can do some wonderfully easy four-wheel drifts.
Previously, Foust was driving a VW Polo for Andretti Autosport in GRC, but the team unveiled the look of the Beetle GRC at the Chicago Auto Show. Now, Foust is finally getting to show off his new office to the public, and like VW's tagline for the new car claims, it's way hotter than Herbie.
