Looking For A Great Daily Driver -- This Is It! on 2040-cars
United States
All --
I have a 1985 Volkswagen Vanagon that I need to sell straightaway. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this vehicle an 8.5 to 9. EXTERIOR -- Is in excellent shape. There is one small ding on the driver side rear of the vehicle (pictured) and a very small amount of seam rust. There is NO rust around any of the windows and all window seals are very tight. All of the windows open and close easily and there is no broken or cracked glass on the vehicle. The driver's side mirror is off the vehicle right now. I have both the old one and the new one. Old one was not perfect. New one in box is BRAND NEW and just needs to be installed. INTERIOR -- All of the seats and the carpet are in very good shape with few stains and no tears. Considering the vehicle is almost 30 years old, this is probably the best interior on one of these vehicles that I have seen in a long time. Carpet is good but not great. All panels are very, very clean. There is one 1" tear on the driver side of the vehicle near the second row passenger seat. All of the exterior lights work and the tires are in great shape. Lift gate and sliding door work perfectly. ENGINE / ELECTRICAL -- Engine generally runs very strong but is running a bit rough right now and I am not sure why. The panel below the steering column is off right now and again, I am not sure why. Regardless, anyone looking for a VW Vanagon knows how simple these vehicles are to diagnose / repair / operate. My guess is that with a little tinkering, this will be an awesome, awesome daily driver. I can send additional pictures to interested parties. Ph. (719) 660-8266 Thanks, John |

2014 Volkswagen GTI to start a new hot hatch era in Geneva
Tue, 26 Feb 2013The upcoming Geneva Motor Show is going to be stocked with important new production models and sexy concept cars, but hot hatch enthusiasts will undoubtedly see it as the coming out party of the MkVII Volkswagen GTI. And while we've only got European specifications and pricing to go on for now, we can tell from the get-go that the new GTI will be a proper heir to VW's hot hatch legacy.
This seventh-generation GTI is powered by a turbocharged, direct-injection 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which makes 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque in base form. For the first time ever, Volkswagen is also offering a performance pack for the GTI as well, which ups the horsepower to 230 (torque remains unchanged). With a slightly lower curb weight to push around - the new base car weighs 2,978 pounds versus 3,034 for the current three-door GTI - 0-62 miles per hour is now achieved in 6.5 seconds, and top speed is 153 mph. (Cars with the performance pack offer 0-62 mph in 6.4 seconds, and a 155-mph top speed.) Buyers my choose between a six-speed manual transmission or an optional six-speed DSG unit.
Visually, the new GTI has obviously adopted the slant-nosed looks of the MkVII Golf, though with plenty of added drama. The exterior is dominated by the 17-inch "Brooklyn" wheels wearing 225-section rubber, and the aggressive front fascia gets black honeycombed inserts in the upper and lower grille sections. At launch, Volkswagen will offer the GTI in three colors: the Pure White seen here, Tornado Red and Black. Tartan patterned seats are of course still an option for the interior, while the GTI-specific steering wheel and shift knob are standard.
Top Gear drag races VW Golf R against McLaren 675LT and Porsche 911
Thu, Apr 7 2016Top Gear's latest quarter-mile drag race in the collects three very different performance vehicles: the 296-horsepower Volkswagen Golf R, 424-hp Porsche 911 Carrera GTS, and 666-hp McLaren 675LT. While each of these cars sit near the top of their segment, they each come from totally different rungs of the sports car price ladder. Spoiler alert, the Golf R doesn't win. But the final results illustrate the diminishing returns of price and performance. For example, the McLaren is only about a second quicker than the Porsche to 60 miles per hour, but the 675LT costs over 2.5 times more that the GTS. Related Video:
Prop-driven VW Beetle hopes to land in Bonneville [w/video]
Thu, 10 Jan 2013Sometimes you meet folks who, when they tell you "Hey, I have an idea," your reflex response is to stop what you're doing and tell yourself, "Get ready...." We imagine Mike Niemans is one of those folks, and the idea in question is putting a tank engine on a Type 1 Volkswagen Beetle. Not just any old tank engine - as if there were such a thing when we're talking about putting them in cars - but a 668-cubic-inch, 220-horsepower radial engine built by Continental in 1941 and procured from an M2 tank.
In the image above Nieman is using the tank clutch hub to get the motor set up, but in one of the images below you can see what really belongs back there is: a two-inch, reverse-pitch prop taken from a wind generator. He says there's enough mojo with the propeller action to get the car rolling down the runway like a jet when he gives it gas - and speaking of gas, the engine's been refitted to run on propane.
After a few safety tweaks Nieman's going to take the matte-black Beetle to Bonneville, "put the prop on, let her go and see what happens!" We can't wait to see the video of that. There are two shakedown videos below to get you ready.
