1991 Volkswagen VW Vanagon Carat  ( ive been told its called Multi-van )

1991 Vw Vanagon
odometer reads 68000 ( estimated ) has the rare tachometer
Automatic transmission
2.1L motor

1 year only color - grey interior - with rear facing jump seats.
Has some rust along seams , dents in slider door and rear quarter panel ( not very big dents )
I have the missing sliding door lower trim piece ( i bought it for $100 used )
Just installed two new / used 205-70-14 tires - all the tires are in pretty good shape
it does not seem rusty along rockers , etc..  just some seam rust along a few edges ( see pictures )

I bought this van at a local " police / tow yard " auction as is with no keys.  ( the ignition switch has been removed - starts with a screw driver and the lock assembly is cracked )  No keys for the doors / hatch or for the locking gas cap)
I towed it to my shop , checked the fluids and tossed in a battery and to my surprise it fired right up...  I have driven it around my parking lot - goes in drive and forward just fine -  doesnt like going into reverse - i checked fluid after letting it warm up for 10 minutes and the tranny fluid level was below the first dot on the dip stick )  it will go backwards in reverse but take a second to engage.   I have not driven this van over 20 MPH and do not plan too as the brakes are soft as well they work but probably need checked over -

Interior is dirty - but all there -  seats are in great shape -  carpet is dirty and gross -  there are the factory curtains - i think all of them are actually there with the snaps - the one that goes over the sliding door / rear side pass window has a slight tear in it..  there was an extra one on one of the jump seats - maybe its for the windshield?

Stereo is pulled half way out and missing face plate -  the rear speaker above rear seat are missing -  it has an awesome vanagon driver floor mat and an even awesomer taz devil pass floor mat -   there is a bentley repair manual also included..  the door panels are in great shape with speakers in them - the windows roll up and down - very slowly ( probably due to lack of use )  I did not try to use the AC -  a few knobs are missing from the dash..  a few AC vents are missing from the center roof ac thing that goes into the back...   a few cup holders are broken....  all the doors open up and close.

I was going to just part this out -  but thought i would see if someone else needed a vanagon project.   this van must be towed - can not be driven in its current condition -    the steering column doesnt LOCK cuz its broken where ignition switch goes...

For sale as is where is -  its 20 minutes SOUTH of LINCOLN NE in the country ( at my shop )

Happy 60th to the VW Karmann Ghia

Tue, 20 Aug 2013

Volkswagen's product portfolio may be as extensive these days as any other carmaker in the business. But if you still think of the original Beetle as synonymous with the brand, that's probably because a) you're old and b) the Beetle was the company's only product until the mid-50s.
Sixty years ago Wilhelm Karmann (founder of the eponymous coachbuilder) was in Paris for the auto salon and met up with Luigi Segre and his team from Carrozzeria Ghia who showed him what was essentially a "Beetle in a sports coat." A month later they showed it to Volkswagen chief Heinrich Nordhoff who, setting aside his conservative tastes, approved it for production. And so the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was born, giving the German marque a second product line. It still used Beetle mechanicals and was built at the same Karmann factory in Onsabrück that was already assembling the Beetle Cabriolet.
It took another couple of years to put the design into production, but from 1955 to 1974, Volkswagen and Karmann built 362,601 coupes and 80,881 of the subsequent convertible that arrived in 1957. Today the Onsabrück factory is part of the VW Group, handling production of the Golf Cabriolet, XL1 and Porsche Boxster and Cayman, and with that original Karmann Ghia prototype as part of its factory collection.

VW budget sub-brand stuck in limbo over VW standards, costs

Sat, 01 Mar 2014

Reports in October 2012 claimed Volkswagen had begun investigating the creation of its own budget brand. This came after having failed to purchase Malaysian car company Proton or produce a meaningful partnership with Suzuki, and after watching Renault-Nissan make piles of euro on Dacia and plot the return of Datsun.
For VW, more important than the question of what to call it was how to build it profitably and in a way that didn't damage the VW brand. According to a report in Autocar, a satisfactory answer still hasn't been found. The hurdle is how to hit "'necessary' quality and safety levels" at the price points needed to make the venture worthwhile. At the time of the 2012 report, German outlet Der Spiegel said VW was trying to get prices down to 6,000 to 8,000 euro ($7,784 to $10,379 US), about two thousand to four thousand euro under the price of the VW Up and in line with the cost of a 6,790-euro Dacia Sandero in Germany.
In March 2013, VW announced, "We want to bring a true budget car to the market in China in the foreseeable future," the most concrete move in that direction after years of planning to make a decision. Working with local Chinese maker FAW, it was predicted that the vehicle in question would appear around 2016, but as of November last year a final vote on it needed to wait until this year because "We are still working on the cost side" and profit possibilities for a car that "has to be durable, it has to be precise, it has to be safe."
