Clean title in hand. Odometer reads 60k. I think it's 160K.
I drove it as a daily driver. Motor was rebuilt in the early 90's but only driven about 40k by PO when the ignition switch broke. PO didn't fix it and it wasn't driven from about 2001 until 2011 when I got it. Just had the motor out last fall. Put new lifters in, valves, seals. It starts right up everytime. Runs, drives, stops great. Lots of get up and go. Accelerates smoothly. Easy to freeway speeds, even up hill. 2.0 Fuel injected. New shifting coupler and front guide.
New tires, spare too. Paint isn't too bad. It could use a buff and wax. Some surface rust areas. Battery tray rusted through and now has an insert shelf. There is a small gash in metal over the right rear wheel (see pic).
Interior is decent over all. Headliners good. Seats are good other than a small tear in the side of driver seat and one in passenger seat. Can be sewn up. Floor mats are good. Floors have some surface rust and one dime sized rust through spot in the cargo area. It could use a windshield and rubber and a rear window rubber, but not a must.
I installed an aftermarket ignition switch. Everything is included for the original ignition if you want to switch back. I have the heater working good.
I also have the right rear running light, spare tire hard plastic cover, and rear compartment carpet which are included. I'm including a copy of Haynes Bus Maintenance and Repair Manual as well.

Volkswagen formally introduces super-efficient XL1

Mon, 04 Mar 2013

Lightweight and low drag are hallmarks of great sportscar design. But when paired with a super-efficient, hybrid powertrain, you have the Volkswagen's XL1 that has been formally introduced in Geneva today.
When the 1,700-lb, carbon-fiber-bodied two-seater hits the road, its claimed 261 miles per gallon will make it the world's most-fuel-efficient production car. Though "production car" might be a stretch since VW said in a February press release that the XL1 would be built using "handcrafting-like production methods." We translate that to mean you won't be seeing many of these cars on the road. Though no one at VW has mentioned pricing yet, early rumors suggested a six-figure price tag.
That's supercar budget for a vehicle that has a 47-horsepower, two-cylinder diesel engine and a 27hp electric motor. With numbers like that, owners can expect 0-62 mph times of 12.7 seconds and top speed near 100 mph.

VW joins Daimler's protest of new A/C refrigerant as EU deadline for compliance passes

Sun, 06 Jan 2013

The case of Dupont and Honeywell's refrigerant R-1234yf is doing the exact opposite of keeping things cool. The two chemical companies have spent years and hundreds of millions of dollars developing R-1234yf to replace R-134a, the new refrigerant shown to be 99.7-percent kinder to the environment than the one it is meant to succeed. Part of that development has been years of testing by governments, outside safety agencies and automakers to approve the chemical for use in cars. It passed the protocols necessary for the European Union to declare that new and significantly revised cars from 2013 onward needed to use R-1234yf, and mandated that every car as of 2017 must use it.
Enter Daimler AG. The automaker created a head-on collision test with a B-Class at their Sindelfingen test track that would lead to the pressurized refrigerant being sprayed on the engine. The result in 20 out of 20 test was that the refrigerant burst into flames as soon as it hit the hot engine, while Daimler says that R-134a does not catch fire in the same test. Another unexpected result of the R-1234yf test was the release of hydrogen flouride, a chemical far more deadly to humans than hydrogen cyanide, emitted in such amounts that it that turned the windshield white as it began to eat into the glass.
Said a Daimler engineer in a Reuters piece, "It was scarcely believable. The most complicated lab tests conducted using the most sensitive measuring instruments around found nothing and all we do is drive a car around a couple of times, open a tiny hole in the refrigerant line and the next thing you know the car is on fire." So Daimler said it wouldn't use the refrigerant, and it recalled the cars it had already shipped with R-1234yf.

Touring the Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg

Mon, 23 Sep 2013

Forgive the ribbon up top - this isn't so much of a Read This as a Look At This. Ran When Parked took a tour of the sprawling Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg, and while there's a spot of text about the different and unique vehicles on display in the rotating exhibits, it's largely the collection of pictures of odd, one-off VW-badged cars and vans that excites. If you're a fan of the weird and wild, this is a post you'll want to look at.
As RWP points out, this is the larger, but less busy, museum targeted purely at Volkswagen products. The smaller AutoStadt museum, meanwhile, covers a much broader swath, with products from other Volkswagen Group members. Click on over to view the extensive gallery of high-quality images from Ran When Parked.
