Now on the block is my 1970 VW bus. I made a lot of progress with the interior and mechanical restoration of this bus, but have come to a stopping point due to time and other projects, and it is time to move this to someone else and continue the journey.
The bus is originally from Long beach, California, and spent the majority of it's life there. The body is very typical of a California bus. some of the window seals are dry and need to be replaced, but no body cancer to deal with. The motor is a twin carb that has been overhauled, valves recently adjusted, and runs like a sewing machine. The transmission and clutch work very well, doesn't pop out of any gear.
I replaced the rear wheel bearings, hubs, and brakes. I also replaced the center steering pin (big job), steering gear and the steering damper to get the wander out of the front end. The bus has brand new Hankook tires that are bus rated (don't just put passenger tires on these) all around.
The interior is all new by TMI, new panels, carpet, seat covers, and glove box. I even added a new reproduction radio and new antenna (didn't cut up the dash, but it has an ipod input).
I have new seat covers for the front two seats, but couldn't bear to put them on because the existing ones are in such good shape, and was saving them for the total restoration. Same thing with the new steering wheel on the back seat. I also have the original window for the sliding door if you want to go back to bone stock.
So what does it need?
My top priority would be a headliner, but you really should decide if you want to do a repaint and put new window rubbers as part of the process. I couldn't decide, so here we are.
Could use a paint job, but everyone who sees it says leave it alone and drive it.
The gas gauge doesn't work, but the odometer does, so just keep an eye on it and you'll be fine until you decide to replace it.
The headlights, taillights, turn signals and marker lights all work. The dash lights are dim, so probably need some replacements.
The heat is hooked up and you can even feel heat at the windshield and coming under the dash after it warms up. But it is still a VW bus. Lot of area to heat.
This is a great running and driving bus, and the interior is new so you can be comfortable putting the kids in and go for a drive.
But what a great bus for a total restoration!!! The trim is all there, no rust to deal with! This bus has many more miles left, and more memories to make.

Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn resigns amid diesel scandal
Wed, Sep 23 2015Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn is stepping down amid charges the company manipulated its diesel-powered cars to meet emissions regulations around the world, the automaker announced Wednesday. No successor was immediately announced, though recommendations will be made at VW's board meeting Friday. Winterkorn, 68, has led VW since 2007 and oversaw the German automaker's staggering growth around the world. His departure comes less than a week after the EPA alleged the company has been cheating on diesel emissions testing for years, and that its cars might emit 40 times more pollution than legally allowed. The EPA says about 482,000 vehicles are affected in the United States, and VW estimates at least 11 million vehicles globally might have the software that allows the vehicles to cheat emissions regulations. "As CEO I accept responsibility for the irregularities that have been found in diesel engines and have therefore requested the Supervisory Board to agree on terminating my function as CEO of the Volkswagen Group," Winterkorn said in a statement. "I am doing this in the interests of the company even though I am not aware of any wrongdoing on my part. "Volkswagen needs a fresh start – also in terms of personnel. I am clearing the way for this fresh start with my resignation." Winterkorn stepped down after an executive committee meeting of the VW Supervisory Board Wednesday. The committee agreed Winterkorn had no knowledge of wrongdoing. "The executive committee has tremendous respect for his willingness to nevertheless assume responsibility and, in so doing, to send a strong signal both internally and externally," VW said in a statement. Volkswagen is conducting an internal review and expects more "personnel consequences" in the coming days. It also will voluntarily submit a complaint to the state prosecutor's office in Brunswick, Germany, and cooperate with the expected criminal investigation. Winterkorn's departure is the latest development in VW's burgeoning diesel emissions scandal. It came to light last week after the work of researchers at West Virginia University detailed the software manipulation designed to skirt EPA tests, and it has resounded as governments around the world examine Volkswagen's diesel vehicles. The company set aside $7.3 billion to deal with the fallout and has retained the law firm that defended BP during its oil spill.
Felicity Ace sinks with thousands of VWs, Porsches, Lamborghinis
Tue, Mar 1 2022The stricken ship Felicity Ace sank overnight after a week of salvage efforts ultimately proved unsuccessful. The ship, which was carrying up to 4,000 VW Group cars, went to the bottom unexpectedly while a salvage team was attempting to tow it to shore, Bloomberg reports. "Initial reports from the local salvage team state that the vessel had sunk at around 9AM local time having suffered a list to starboard," Mitsui O.S.K. Lines transportation company (MOL), which owns the Felicity Ace, said in a statement released early Tuesday.  "The last vessel position was around 220nm off the Azores," MOL said. "The salvage crafts will remain around the area to monitor the situation. Further information will be provided as it becomes available." The ship sank after being battered by waves and listing 45 degrees to starboard, the ship’s operator said. “The weather was pretty rough out there,” Pat Adamson, a spokesperson for MOL Ship Management (Singapore), a unit of Mitsui OSK Lines Ltd., said by phone. “And then she sank, which was a surprise.” VW, Porsche, Audi, Bentley and Lamborghini-branded models were aboard the ship, which was headed to Rhode Island from GermanyÂ’s Emden port when the fire broke out on Feb. 16. Rough seas and ongoing fires fueled by the lithium-ion batteries of EVs onboard delayed the ship's salvage and recovery operations for the better part of a week. While the likelihood of salvaging the smoke and potentially fire- and water-damaged vehicles from Felicity Ace's hold was slim to none, some had held out hope that their special-ordered vehicles might survive the mishap. The Panama-flagged Felicity Ace was safely evacuated of its 22 crew members by the Portuguese navy after a fire started in its hold more than a week ago. The ship can carry up to 4,000 cars. European carmakers declined to discuss how many vehicles and what models were on board, but it appears to have been transporting approximately 2,500 cars, including roughly 1,100 Porsches and an undetermined number of Volkswagens. The cars aboard were on order. Porsche customers in the United States were being contacted by their dealers, the company said. “We are already working to replace every car affected by this incident and the first new cars will be built soon,” Angus Fitton, vice president of PR at Porsche Cars North America, Inc., told The Associated Press in an email. The ship sank in water nearly 10,000 feet deep, the Portuguese Navy said.
