The TR6 was the penultimate design in a long line of classic British sports cars made by Standard-Triumph. Its successor, the homely TR7/8, has never really achieved collectible status. Thus, the TR6 was the last of the hairy-chested, body-on-frame Roadsters, with a brawny straight-six up front, preferably to be driven with the top down.
<!--[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]-->

TR6 is a very versatile sports car. Featuring an easy-to-operate, weather-tight folding top, optional removable hardtop and a good heating system, it can be used year round as a daily driver. It's not a mean-spirited diva, but an un-temperamental, ruggedly powerful automobile that will put a smile on your face every time you drive it.

Sadly, many of these purists' cars have been eaten alive by the merciless rust cancer. Others have been "restored" with varying degrees of competence. But they will never be the same, 'cause a car is original only once. Nicely preserved original examples, true survivors that have never been restored, never needed restoration, are highly sought after today. They are the ones true collectors lust for.

The most likely place to unearth such a rare gem would be Southern California, with its mild climate and large number of open-air enthusiasts. The wonderful TR6 presented here is as nice and as original as it gets. With the exception of only a couple panels, the car is still wearing nearly 100% of its factory applied British Racing Green paint. It never suffered from neglect or corrosion and is as virginally preserved as one could hope for.

This TR6 VIN *CF16113U* left the factory gates in Coventry on December, 1973 and sold new at British Motor Car Distributers in Anaheim, CA.

A one inch stack of documents provide a rich history.

Receipts totaling over $10,000 intimately inform us - not only about the substantial and meticulous maintenance work performed, but also how reliable this fine automobile has been and will continue to be for many years to come. All books, receipts and documents go with the car.

Only leaving the Golden State for a few short years, the car was always pampered and fully documented since day one. The current owner is a prominent, local businessman who brought the car back to Southern CA where it remains covered and sheltered in his “man cave” among a private collection of museum quality automobiles. During his ownership, (less than 800 miles ago) it was mechanically “perfected” so he and his family could enjoy trouble free, cross-country trips.

Hence, a unique opportunity arises to obtain an original and coveted “6” with hardtop and overdrive. One that is pampered beyond belief by a mature owner with big pockets and the willingness to pay up for the best service and upgrades money can buy.

Let's check out this dream find now, inside and out!

Exterior:

After four decades, the immaculate finish, rust-free body and undercarriage is a testimony towards the loving care this TR has always received and underscores its Southern California provenance.

The Karmann-designed coachwork looks great. Door and hood fit is excellent, and there are absolutely no signs that this car has ever been involved in an accident, not even a small one. Did we mention that it is 100% rust free as well?

All of the paint still displays a wonderful luster; please, keep in mind, it's 40 years old and there are a few small imperfections including some chips, dings and scratches in isolated places and areas that were re-sprayed or brush-touched.

There is only minor pitting in some of the chrome. Otherwise, all brightwork still sparkles like new.

A scrape in the rear bumper and a paint flaw can be seen in the close-up photo above. Clearly a minor cosmetic repair included paint work but the bumper was left alone.

Nothing to lose sleep over though. The car's overall finish displays a look not unlike finely patinated porcelain.

Factory correct, chromed luggage rack is a nice addition.

A small ding can be seen on the top of the quarter panel (see above photo).

How often do you encounter a vintage British Roadster featuring nearly all of its original, factory-applied paint?

Most importantly, body gaps between hoods, doors and fenders are of reference quality and there is absolutely NO evidence of rust, collision repair or any other mishap that would cause the enthusiast sleepless nights.

What makes this TR6 unique in the classic car world is that you actually have three vehicles in one: a roadster, a convertible and a coupe.

As a roadster, the top retracts behind the seats and the original, boot installs within 30 seconds. And yes, all the snaps are fully intact.

Raise convertible top the “6” becomes a perfect all-weather convertible. The brand-new top fits tight as a drum and there are no leaks or wind noises.

The rear window has a nice zip-out feature allowing fresh air in or a surf board out.

But wait, this TR can even be enjoyed during the cold season.

Thanks to the matching steel hardtop (with perfect headliner), the car morphs into a weather-tight coupe with added lateral support.

All original bolts, brackets, sleeves and hardware are complete to install the hardtop to every fastening point.

Finally, in case of a surprising rain shower, or to keep the interior safe from prying eyes and damaging sun rays, the zippered tonneau cover can be fitted.

All fastening snaps on the covers and convertible top are undamaged.

Full Tonneau Cover is very practical; permitting you to leave the TR's top down when parking it and when you are about to go cruising by yourself, you just unzip the driver's side. Makes for a draft-free drive, and--if needed--the heater works much better, too!

Car's paws feature these vintage, Michelin Redline tires.

With exceptionally well-preserved 6J x 15" factory steel rims with chrome lug nuts, center caps and beauty rings, wheel detail is amazing.

Speaking of detail, let us stress how straight the body is, how sparkling the chrome, how glossy the paint: if you wouldn't know differently, you'd think to be looking at a 4-year old, not a 40 year-old car.

This one is that clean!

Let’s take a peak underneath:

With only minor surface rust, there is zero evidence of corrosion; only a nice, original, collision free chassis.

We'll inspect the interior next, shall we?

The original black upholstery is as clean as can be.

The bucket seats with small head rests display unique, diamond-pattern center sections.

Original floorboards are rust free.

The TR6's luxuriously outfitted cockpit is a world apart from the austerity of a TR3 or early TR4, keeping more in line with a Jaguar E-Type or Jensen.

Even the vulnerable areas under the doors and rockers, everything appears 100% original and free of any corrosion.

A true British Roadster must have a wooden dashboard, and the TR6 is no exception.

With a professionally restored veneer dash and instruments, the full array of SMITHS gauges all work flawlessly and perfect silk screening highlights the dials with red needles.

Above photos of instruments were taken after the engine was idling for 20 minutes in 90 degree, Southern California weather!

Woodgrain finish is truly stunning.

Though not original to this car, the overdrive appears to be original Triumph equipment (not aftermarket). It is operated by the lever switch just behind the turn signal switch. Everything is factory correct and works perfectly.

Moto-Lita steering wheel is both a stylish and functional British addition. And not inexpensive either.

The black console area, knee pads and dash pad are crack free and both sun visors are new with crystal clear passenger mirror.

An upgraded, 4-speaker stereo system with AM/FM Cassette (how modern!) guarantees pleasurable audio; even when traveling topless at speeds well above the double nickel.

Glove box locks and the light still works.

In short, everything looks and operates as if the car was delivered in this decade; not 40 years ago.

How about a look inside the boot?

The carpeted trunk is surprisingly large and very clean.

Original lug wrench, jack and spare belt are shown.

Matching wheel with spare tire resides in a separate compartment below a carpeted wooden partition. A typical TR6 weak spot would be the trunk floor. Out of sight and deeply recessed, it is usually the first place where corrosion develops.
<!--[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]-->

Things are different here!

Not the tiniest rust bubble is to be found; the paint inside is still 100% factory original.

A picture says more than a thousand words: this--all original--trunk is clean!

Let’s have a peak under the hood.

Engine & Mechanical:

TR’s immaculate engine compartment is all original, factory-correct, down to the decals and markings.

Originality abounds and the wiring looks fantastic. The car always runs cool, and there are no oil leaks worth mentioning.

The 2.5-liter, six cylinder power plant inhales through dual Stromberg carburetors.

It sounds crisp and runs smooth, with superb oil pressure and stable coolant temperature, even during the hottest summer days.

The wonderful thing about these older Triumphs is - with knowledge and a decent set of tools, you can keep this fine “6” in tip-top condition.

Over the years, beyond religious oil changes, meticulous maintenance was performed on the engine, its ancillaries, suspension, fuel and braking systems.

As a result, this TR6 is mechanically as strong as it is cosmetically. Yes, any TR6 can be a very tough and reliable automobile with a bit of preventative maintenance!

Drivability:

Invigorating is the word that best describes this TR6 experience.

The Roadster runs like a cheetah on the prowl. Its suspension layout is intelligently engineered and the power-to-weight ratio is very favorable, indeed. In any climate, the powerful 6-cylinder engine starts every time, idles, revs and pulls effortlessly through the gears without unusual noises or hesitation and accelerates strong and smooth leaving no smoke in your rear-view mirror.

Warmed up, the oil pressure ranges from about 35 lbs. at idle to a reassuring 75 lbs. at speed. Coolant temperature remains absolutely stable, with no hint of overheating even after extended runs at high speeds. The dealer added overdrive unit works perfectly and provides relaxed highway driving.

Throwing this TR through the curves, the strong engine emanates throaty, lusty sounds. The fully synchronized 4-speed transmission with electronic overdrive shifts very smooth and precise. The fresh disc brakes anchor the car securely, in a straight line, and without any hint of fading.

Aided by newer tires, handling and braking are simple and superb with no rattles, shakes, shimmies or pulls. All in all, this Triumph is a thoroughly convincing performer and a joy to drive!

Everything works on this TR, from lights and switches to heater fan and back-up lights. Despite its age, the car definitely is ready to be driven anywhere, even across the Country, if that's where you live.

Pound for pound, Triumph's TR6 is one of the finest, most fun post-war British sports cars. Being the last of the breed, this TR6 is a highly collectible Classic with fantastic appreciation potential, one that can easily serve as a reliable daily driver.

To make things even better, the car gets 25 MPG on regular gas and is smog exempt in California. Reasonably priced spares and affordable classic car insurance are readily available.

Looking back, you realize that, somewhere in time, the chapter of the true British Roadster has ended. It has ended with the introduction of engine management systems; it has ended with the worldwide popularity of power steering, power windows, power tops, and power-assisted thinking, even in Her Majesty's Kingdom. It has ended with the Triumph.

This Triumph TR6 however is up to any task imaginable. It could serve as a show car, a "new" old car to relive the good old days, or simply as a reliable, fun daily driver during ANY time of the year. At the very least, no matter where you go, you’ll see a smile on everyone’s face, including your own. To state it succinctly: It delivers on its promise!

There's but one stumbling block on the way to TR6 heaven: unmolested, well documented, hardtop with overdrive examples are nearly impossible to find. All the more reason to watch this one closely;

Jaguar F Type V6 S vs Triumph Street Triple R in open-air track attack

Sun, 21 Sep 2014

Typically, these track battle videos pair up car against car or, in more disparate circumstances, car versus crossover, as we saw the other day. While the outcome of that battle was quite predictable, what'll happen when an equally fetching (and fast) four-wheeler is put up against one of the icons of the two-wheeled world? Evo just had to find out.
Matching up a Jaguar F-Type V6 S Convertible against a Triumph Street Triple R is at least more of an even fight than the last battle between the Porsche Cayman GTS and Macan Turbo. The Triumph has a 675-cc engine to work with, and is very light. Meanwhile, the Jag has a thumping 380-horsepower, 3.0-liter, supercharged V6 to haul about it's considerably heftier heft. Who will come out on top?
You'll need to watch the full video to find out.
