You're looking at a 2002 Saab 9-3 SE Turbo hatch-back sedan. The car is very zippy, and gets great fuel mileage (we've gotten as good as 31mpg with it). It's got the 205 horsepower EcoPower 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 cylinder engine which runs very smoothly and powerfully. Doesn't burn oil, or smoke. It has 200k on it, but has a lot of life left in it. The transmission shifts firmly and smoothly just as it should (no mushiness, or hesitation whatsoever). The interior is in nice condition, as is the headliner. Sunroof works properly, and does not leak. Rear hydraulics on the hatch back need to be replaced, so as you can see in the pictures, I just use a broom-handle to hold the hatch up when loading/unloading. The A/C is ice cold & the heat is toasty hot. Saab is built in Sweden, and they really engineer everything on these cars to the n'th degree! The vents are deflected right at the windows exactly where they need to be for fantastic defrosting. Also, the car warms up in about 1/2 a mile in the Winter, so you get good heat almost immediately which is nice. The seats are leather, but the center portions are cloth, so they don't feel cold on your legs to get into the car, or burn you in the summer which is nice. As you can see, the car is a pewter color, but the previous owner had a deer hit, so we found a fender that was supposed to be the same color, and had it shipped from an auto-salvage yard, but it turned out to be more of a tan color unfortunately, so it will need to be painted to match the rest of the car. There's still a little crease on the front of the door, and some dings on the hood as you can see, but it was a very light hit, and did not set off the airbags or anything like that. The car has good, quiet exhaust. No cracked glass. Everything works on the car, but the driver's doorglass will come off its track if you don't hold it back while rolling it down (it's easy to get used to, and we just live with it). Also, the neutral-safety-switch is bad, or unhooked, but it doesn't affect drivability of the car. We put new spark-plugs in, and fixed a vacuum leak when we first got the car, and it runs great now. We run Mobil 1 Full Synthetic in it (which is what they call for). The brakes stop the car very well (4 wheel discs), and the vehicle handles phenominally around corners, etc. Additionally, Saabs are consitently the safest cars on the road, and have been designed that way for years. This model is very sporty and versatile (it's almost like owning a little pickup, or a wagon) as the rear seats fold down, and give you 6 foot of cargo hauling ability!

Because it's got some cosmetic imperfections, I've listed it at a bargain price. For comparison... you may click on, or paste the following link in to your web-browser to view the Kelly Blue Book value for this car:

Junkyard Gem: 1989 Saab 9000 Turbo

Tue, Jul 24 2018

Saab got a lot of sales out of its 99 and 99-based 900 models, but a bigger and more modern car became necessary in order to compete with other European manufacturers in the executive-car market. This car was the 9000, and examples are getting very hard to find nowadays. Here's a 200,000-mile turbocharged 1989 Saab 9000 in a San Francisco Bay Area self-service wrecking yard. Other than Mercedes-Benzes and Volvo 240s, I don't see many junkyard 1980s European cars with better than 200,000 miles on the clock. The owner or owners of this Saab loved it enough to keep it in nice shape for a good 30 years, and it drove more than 7,000 miles on average during each year of its life. The engine is the same 160-horsepower turbocharged Saab H that went into the 1989 Saab 900 Turbo. This engine is descended from the Triumph Slant-4, which Americans knew best as the power under the hood of the Triumph TR-7. Members of this engine family remained in production from 1968 through 2009. It has the five-speed manual transmission, which was starting to become an unusual transmission choice for U.S. car buyers by 1989 — even in Saabs. The Scania badging on Saabs went away after 1995. I see plenty of Saab 900s during my junkyard wanderings, but 9000s aren't so easy to find in the big U-Wrench yards in 2018. I'm not sure what's going on with the fabric in this car's door-panel inserts. Saab went with the same ignition-switch location as everybody else with the 9000, rather than the "traditional" spot between the front seats. Naturally, Saab purists were so outraged by this that they ordered another round of surstromming and swore to stick with their two-stroke 96s for the next 30 years. What brands have Saab owners defected to? Polk investigates

Sun, 02 Sep 2012

When a brand goes belly-up, it's natural for analysts to wonder where that brand's consumers will turn. General Motors has mothballed more car brands the last decade than most other automakers' have in their entire portfolios, so "Where did [insert brand here] buyers go?" has been a common question asked of The General. According to reports, it didn't do so well at retaining Oldsmobile owners (who supposedly went to Hyundai), or Hummer and Saturn buyers, but did get some return love from Pontiac owners.
A consultant with Polk has turned the loyalty lens on Saab. The Polk Disposal Loyalty Methodology tracks owners selling vehicles within six months of buying a new one. In 2010 and 2011, Polk found that when Saab died, owners went right up the middle of the mainstream to Honda. It was close, though, with just 0.2 percent separating Honda from number two Volkswagen. Audi comes in third.
After that it's back to the masses with Toyota, Chevrolet and Ford trumping import luxury brands. And if you combine all of the General Motors brands that Saab owners have migrated to, GM more than doubles Honda with a 15.2-percent share, so all the love is not lost.

Meet the other Cadillac wagon. It's as American as ABBA

Tue, Aug 16 2022

The Cadillac CTS Wagon became a cult classic the second it went on sale. We all knew that it was never going to sell in anything approaching significant numbers, and if that "we" didn't include those actually working at GM, one would have to wonder what they were smoking. Cadillac was still having a hard enough time trying to convince people that it was now a BMW-fighting sport luxury brand rather than the purveyor of Grandpa-piloted land yachts. To many, a sport sedan like the CTS seemed like a stretch. But a CTS sport wagon? It sure seemed like GM was just doing things for funzies, an impression only enhanced by the CTS-V Wagon. Forget cult classic. That thing was an instant legend.  And yet, the CTS wasn't the only Cadillac of that era offered as a wagon. It wasn't even the first. Before GM said "to hell with it, let's have some fun" on this side of the pond, over in Europe, it had already taken a page from its old badge-engineering playbook to create the 2006 Cadillac BLS Wagon. It was available as a sedan, too, but its awkward majesty is best enjoyed as the long-roof model.  There's just something off about the whole thing, right? That's probably because it also looks vaguely familiar, as if you've seen it before. So where the hell does this thing come from? Sweden! Behind that Cadillac Art and Science face is a Saab 9-3, and in the case of the BLS Wagon, the Saab 9-3 Sport Combi wagon. The roofline is the dead giveaway, as no other wagon has ever looked like that. In fact, the roof and windows were the only exterior elements to copy directly over from 9-3 to BLS. No kidding. With the Cadillac front end, doesn't the Saab-funky-boxiness make it look like a miniature hearse? The answer is yes. GM's design team, led by Ed Welburn, was quite pleased with his work. Perhaps it even egged him on to create a real Cadillac sport wagon? "The whole team was very excited to apply Cadillac's design language to a wagon for the first time," said Welburn in a press release from the time. "The V-shaped chrome-plated grille, a Cadillac hallmark, is picked up again by the shape of the rear window, and the body side character lines make it unmistakably a Cadillac." The interior is surprisingly different from the 9-3, including the ignition switch migrating from the center console up to the steering column. It also wasn't exactly in keeping with the Cadillac norm of the time.
