Huge, pricey trucks haul jobs and profits for the Detroit Three

Tue, Feb 5 2019

DECATUR, Texas — Mickey McMaster is on his 12th pickup truck. The 61-year old farm equipment dealer in Decatur, Texas, two weeks ago treated himself to a 2019 GMC Denali for around $69,000 — a reward for long hours at work. "For me this is the Cadillac of trucks, it's a real luxury vehicle," McMaster said. "I've worked my way up to afford a truck like this and it shows that I've earned it." McMaster is the kind of customer General Motors Co is banking on as it plans to add 1,000 jobs at a plant in Flint, Michigan that will build a new generation of its largest pickups. Demand from Texas and other heartland states for big pick-ups is providing a lifeline to many workers the No. 1 U.S. automaker is laying off at plants elsewhere. The Detroit Three automakers and thousands of their U.S. workers are counting on customers like McMaster to keep buying bigger and more luxurious pickup trucks even if overall U.S. vehicle demand weakens this year, as most analysts predict. At Flint, GM will build a new generation of its heavy-duty Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierras, including luxury models that are some of the most profitable vehicles on the planet. GM, Ford Motor Co and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV's Ram division own the segment and are each doubling down with new or redesigned models launching this year. Sales of heavy-duty pickups in the United States have grown to more than 600,000 vehicles a year, up more than 20 percent since 2013, according to industry data. Prices for luxury models can easily top $70,000. GM on Tuesday celebrated the launch of a new generation of heavy-duty GMC and Chevrolet pickups at the assembly plant in Flint, Michigan, that is now building all such trucks for the company. At the same time that GM is laying off thousands of U.S. workers and planning to shutter five North American factories, Flint is hiring. The plant runs on three daily shifts, six days a week. As the new model's assembly system ramps up, the plant's capacity will increase by more than 25 percent, plant manager Mike Perez told Reuters. The Flint plant plans to add 1,000 workers, more than half of the 1,500 factory workers who have asked to transfer from plants GM has targeted for shutdown as part of CEO Mary Barra's restructuring plan. "We're bringing in 50 to 100 people every week," said Perez. Workers last week were still finishing the job of retooling the Flint factory to build the new heavy-duty trucks as part of a $1.5 billion investment project.

2020 Ram 2500 in minimal camouflage reveals lights, grille

Mon, Nov 5 2018

The folks at FCA have kept the next-generation Ram Heavy Duty trucks well-covered up to now. Now, we finally get to see an example of the truck with minimal vinyl wrap camouflage, giving us our best look yet at the 2020 Ram 2500. It has a number of design cues taken from Ram 1500, but it has a number of distinct differences. At the front, we have a pretty clear look at the 2500's fascia. The grille shares the same non-crosshair design of the 1500. It's flanked by wide headlights, and there's a chrome line that runs along the tops of the headlights and wraps around the top of the grille. Unlike the 1500, the 2500's grille is much taller, sticking way up above the headlights. It also retains the slightly trapezoidal shape. The headlights also have turn signals that protrude from below. The rest of the truck is still relatively well-covered. One key detail we can make out is the taillights, which appear to be the same as those used on the 2019 Ram 1500 Tradesman. As such, the bed will likely share cues with the 1500, such as the molded belt line low on the bedsides. Past spy photos have also revealed that the 2500 will also share the 1500's sharp interior. We're expecting to hear more about the heavy duty Ram in the next few months. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Chevy Silverado edges Ram 1500 in Consumer Reports two-truck shootout

Tue, 17 Sep 2013

Forget Corvette versus Viper. When it comes to important head-to-head comparisons, fullsize trucks are where domestic automakers really care. And until the redesigned Ford F-150 makes its debut, the Chevrolet Silverado is going to have plenty to brag about thanks to a new Consumer Reports shootout against the Ram 1500.
It was a tight race among these V8-powered titans, but the all-new 2014 Silverado (and its GMC Sierra twin) barely edged out Ram's updated pickup with a score of 81 points - enough to make it the institute's top-rated fullsize truck on the market. Its narrow victory over the Ram, which finished just three points back, was due to its superior fuel economy, better towing and payload capacity and conveniences like a lower step-in height, easy-to-use tailgate and rear bumper steps that make loading and unloading less of a chore.
Importantly, CR notes that buyers with less heavy-duty truck needs might actually prefer the Ram over the Chevrolet, since its high points include a smoother ride thanks to its coil spring rear suspension, dominant infotainment system with Uconnect, and a big thumbs up for the available Hemi engine and eight-speed automatic transmission.
