2015 Porsche Cayenne GTS proves performance is relative

Thu, Nov 20 2014

The Turbo may be the most powerful model in the Cayenne range, but the GTS is arguably the enthusiast's choice. (In so far as a 4,500-pound crossover can be considered an "enthusiast's choice," anyway.) And now, after refreshing the rest of the Cayenne lineup, Porsche has revealed the new Cayenne GTS, alongside its new 911 GTS stablemate, here at the LA Auto Show. Like the new Cayenne S, the new GTS drops the previous version's atmospheric V8 for a 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6, but ups the output to 440 horsepower and 445 pound-feet of torque to propel Zuffenhausen's portliest to 62 in a scant 5.2 seconds. Alongside the power upgrade, the GTS gets a lowered air suspension and sportier exhaust, the beefier brakes from the Cayenne Turbo and an upgraded aero kit to help with the whole barn-door-profile thing. Just don't expect all that extra kit and the prestige of a Porsche badge on your crossover to come cheap, with prices starting at $95,500 (plus $995 destination).

Porsche 911 Targa 4S special makes us want to go Dutch

Mon, Apr 20 2015

There's a long list of things that make us love the Netherlands, and not all of them involve activities that would be illegal in most of the United States. Like this latest special edition Porsche 911, for example. Unveiled at AutoRAI 2015 – Holland's premier car show that opened last week – the Porsche 911 Targa 4S Exclusive Edition celebrates the 50th anniversary of Zuffenhausen's iconic partial convertible. It's decked out in Gulf blue, but instead of contrasting with bright orange, nearly everything else on this special Elfen is blacked out: The 20-inch Fuchs-style alloys, the throwback quarter-panel racing stripes, the LED headlight frames... everything but the signature Targa roof bar, which keeps its brushed metal finish. The interior is rather more subdued than you'd find on most special editions, with throwback houndstooth fabric seats and silver stitching. Power comes from the 3.8-liter boxer-six driving 400 horses to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Sport Chrono Package Plus, a sports exhaust, adaptive suspension and Bose audio system are all fitted as standard. Options include carbon-ceramic brakes, a seven-speed manual transmission and a 30-horse Powerkit. As the name suggests, though, this is a rather exclusive edition indeed. All fifteen examples will be made available exclusively in the Netherlands, priced from ˆ223,230 with the PDK or ˆ229,500 with the manual. That's more than you'd pay for a 911 Turbo Cabrio in the same country, and works out to more than $240k at today's conversion rates. Porsche 911 GT3 RS ends up in canal near dealership

Wed, Mar 30 2016

All new Porsches are cooled by water. That's just the way it is now, and no amount of purist moaning is going to change it. But when it comes to a water-cooled Porsche, this stretches the limits. This Gulf-livery-themed 911 GT3 RS had its nose deposited in a canal outside Porsche of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. There's a water hazard joke to be made here. According to a Google translation, the dealership's owner is blaming a mechanic for the mistake, while adding the damage isn't fatal to the ultra-rare 911. That has to be at least partially because the heart of this beast – the 4.0-liter, 500-horsepower flat-six engine – sits at the far rear of the car. Hopefully, that means damage is limited to just the body, brakes, and suspension. While it's hard to tell from the angle of this photo, the rear-engine layout may also be what kept more of the car from going in the drink – it seems possible a front-engine car may have been submerged.
