1978 Pontiac Bandit Trans Am With Hurst Hatch T-roof Real 'bandit' Not Clone on 2040-cars

1978 Pontiac Trans Am Bandit Special Edition 6.6 Litre. This is a rare optioned car that came with Standard Shift, Hurst Hatch T-Roofs but with No Air Conditioning. This car was built in Norwood Ohio, and sold new in Canada, (which is probably why the car was ordered and/or built without A/C). I've owned this car for 27 years. It was completely restored in 1990. Since then I've made some changes, mostly mechanical, in order to make the car more drivable. Most recently I just installed a brand new Pontiac 400 Motor and Tremec 5 Speed Transmission. The original Super T-10 4 Speed Shifter is included with the car. Other modifications include rebuilt 3:90 rear end. The car originally had 3:42's. The car still has the original rear in it, I only changed the internals. New KYB Gas Adjust Shocks, B-Cool Radiator, Twin Electric Fans, Oversized Alternator, MSD Ignition, and Sub Frame Connectors. I recovered the original seats in black cloth. I changed the original gold dash trim piece back in 1990 because the original was damaged when I was restoring the car. I also used 1977 door panels because the original door panels did not show well. Back in 1990 there were no 'Bandit' Special Edition trim parts available, only standard Trans Am parts, so my options were limited. How many people think Buick or GMC should have gotten the axe instead of Pontiac? You can't see it, but I'm raising my hand. Autoweek reports that former Vice Chairman of GM, Bob Lutz, has indicated that things didn't have to end up the way they did.
"The Feds said, 'Yeah, how much money have you made on Pontiac in the last 10 years?' and the answer was, 'Nothing.'"
In a talk given at the Petersen Automotive Museum for the Inside the MotoMan Studio series, Lutz says "The Feds said, 'Yeah, how much money have you made on Pontiac in the last 10 years?' and the answer was, 'Nothing.' So, it goes. And when the guy who is handing you the check for $53 billion says, 'I don't want Pontiac, drop Pontiac or you don't get the money,' it doesn't take you very long to make up your mind." Lutz even added that the next-generation Pontiac G6 would have benefitted from the rear-wheel-drive platform of the Cadillac ATS. How awesome would that have been?
For the 1939 World's Fair, Pontiac built a Deluxe Six bodied in Plexiglass. Part of the Previews of Progress pavilion in which General Motors' Futurama showed off what was to come in the world of autos, the 'invisible' Pontiac is credited as the first transparent car in America. And there were no shortcuts taken with its body: the Plexiglass form was fabricated by the company that brought the material to market in 1933, Rohm & Haas.
The see-through sedan was sold at RM Auctions' St. John's auction in Michigan on July 30, fetching $308,000. Not bad appreciation for a domestic oddity that cost $25,000 to build when new. General Motors has made a science out of sharing platforms. So when the company's Kappa platform was introduced for a new rear-drive roadster to be distributed across three different motor divisions, you'd have figured the program was pretty safe, right? Unfortunately for the workers at the Wilmington Assembly Plant which manufactured the Kappa roadsters, those three divisions were Pontiac, Saturn and Opel - three units which the General has either sold or shut down. Which is a shame, because a perfectly good rear-drive roadster platform is a heck of a thing to waste.
In one of the strangest rumors we've heard recently, however, our compatriots over at Jalopnik report that the DeLorean Motor Company (yes, that DeLorean Motor Company) is considering buying the plant and the platform from GM and putting it back into production as a new DMC.
