Low mileage 225/70R15 GoodYear GT IIs on 15" Rallys. All floor and body panels are original save for the hood. Original AM/FM flip-band radio. Factory tinted glass. Antenna in (new )windshield. New padded top & glass. Original boot. 4 barrel QuadraJet. (Original 2 barrel and manifold available.) Owned 32 years. This unrestored, well-maintained car drives & rides great!
Remember Shawshank Redemption? Andy Dufresne driving off to Mexico? This is the car! OK, his was red & this is Sierra yellow, his was a Goat and this looks an awful lot like one.... But, unlike Andy, I drove this from California to Ohio. Never on salt; never on snow.
Still, it's an original mid-century, mid-life crisis car, Bought it in Sep 69, after Bill’s divorce! As the second owner, I bought it from him in 81, with about 55K on it. It gets a lot of looks and offers on the street!
It was Summertime when I decided to drive the car back to Ohio across the Trans Canada Highway. (It's a Northern California car; it's got no air.) Driving thru the Rockies (Banf, Glacier Park, Calgary) and half way across Canada, I decided this car was a better ride and more comfortable and than my folks’ Seville. In Winnipeg an old fart (do car dealers ever retire?) offered to trade for an AC Cobra..., kit car. Yeah, right! This car's still in great shape and I wouldn't hesitate to drive it back to California.
The good: Mid-century muscle car. Driven fifteen years/cruised fifteen years; Survivor! Well maintained/not restored. Original drivetrain. Never on snow/never on salt. Easy restoration project. Reportedly, one of only 4,670 such convertibles built.
At 140K, I got a "premium" engine rebuild (Al Leist Racing Engines, San Mateo): forged pistons, balanced, sodium-hardened valves, HD oil pump & etc - got the bill. Transmission rebuilt soon after. Replaced all four coil springs with HD springs. KYB shocks. Added rear sway bar. Rides good and handles good. All work done by professionals. Check Yelp reviews for Performance Fabrication, San Carlos, mechanics from 1981-1991. Mike, the next mechanic was just as good.
Front buckets rebuilt/recovered matching original, parchment vinyl and pattern, plus new original-matching carpet, c. 1995. (Cook’s Upholstery, Redwood City. He put on an earlier top, too.) Five years later, crossing the border into Canada, the Mountie checking out my car, pulled out his knife. WTF! Not a word. Trying to bluff me, I guess, but at least he didn't cut up my seats.
Before the engine rebuild, I'd get great mileage - between 16-19 mpg. When it got down to 16, I knew it was time for a tune-up. At the rebuild - they talked me into a Meltorq cam - I did get more power, but at a cost. Later, my mechanic suggested I'd get better mileage with a stock four-barrel (they came on this car.) Don't really, tho we futzed around with it quite a bit. Runs great!
Mods: As-mentioned Quadra-Jet 4 barrel (& rebuilt by my mechanic. (Original carb/manifold available.)
Moved up to 15" x 7" Rally IIs, had them powder coated in original colors. Nice trim rings & center caps.
The bad: What doesn't needed a little work. When I got back here I thought it would be a good project. I got a new top, but didn't get around to the piddly stuff. (Didn't find many people I trusted.) It's got a total of five dings and a small spot of rust on one of the right-side weep-holes. One day I came out to the parking lot to find a note from the police, saying "Your car was involved in an accident, call us." I looked and looked and couldn't find anything. Six months later I noticed where the left corner of the rear bumper had been hit and pushed out the fender 1/16". Crap! Chrome is good, tho.
Back in the mid-eighties, I was a couple of blocks from home when this guy pulls out of his driveway in front of me. Going about twenty, I T-boned him. I got a new hood, new cowl and bumper. I had the car completely repainted at the time. In spite of the great pictures, the paint is a little tired. The new hood wasn't the best and has developed a couple of spots. Could be fixed easily. I thought I'd replace it with a bolt-on GTO hood with small scoops. The new front bumper wasn’t the best and it needs to be re-dipped. I covered a spot with a bumper sticker from my buddy’s band. "ZEUS ROCKS THE WEST"
Then, who knows where they come from but there are a couple of dings in the right front fender, right on the crease. A talented amateur could pound them out. Like I said, it’s time for a new paint job. Also, when I got the paint job, they used replacement molding. It’s similar, but not original. Recently, some silvering has come off rear view mirror. Clock never worked.
As second owner for 32 years I've fixed or replaced a lot of stuff. Almost all work done professionally by one of two mechanics.

GM recalling 70k Chevy Malibus, Pontiac G6s over steering issue
Sun, Feb 15 2015A problem with the power steering system in the Chevy Malibu and Pontiac G6 has prompted General Motors and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to issue a recall for an estimated 69,633 vehicles. The issue revolves around the electric power steering assist, which could suddenly fail and increase the risk of a crash, especially at low speeds where the power steering is most helpful. The recall affects 2006-2007 Chevy Malibu sedans and Malibu Maxx wagons (specifically those manufactured between April 1, 2006, and June 30, 2006), as well as the Pontiac G6 (which was offered as a sedan, coupe or convertible) from the same model years and manufactured from April 18, 2006, to June 30, 2006. Owners of the affected units can expect to hear from the manufacturer with instructions to bring in their vehicles to their local dealers to have the torque sensors in the power steering system replaced. RECALL Subject : Sudden Loss of Electric Power Steering , 1 INVESTIGATION(S) Report Receipt Date: FEB 04, 2015 NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V064000 Component(s): STEERING Potential Number of Units Affected: 69,633 Manufacturer: General Motors LLC SUMMARY: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured April 1, 2006, to June 30, 2006, and 2006-2007 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured April 18, 2006, to June 30, 2006. In the affected vehicles, there may be a sudden loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist that could occur at any time while driving. CONSEQUENCE: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash. REMEDY: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the torque sensor assembly, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. GM's number for this recall is 14772. Note: This is an expansion of recall 14V-153 to cover additional vehicles built between April 1, 2006 and June 30, 2006. NOTES: Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
Rent the 1967 Pontiac GTO from the XxX films now on Turo
Tue, Jan 10 2017The process of renting a car usually ranges from mildly annoying to "I'm calling corporate to get you fired." Plainly, it sucks, but sometimes you're left with no alternative. Turo, a peer-to-peer carsharing network, has created what's essentially the AirBnB for cars. Like AirBnB, the quality and variety of the rides varies based on location. If you're in Tucson, Ariz., in the next week, go check out this 1967 Pontiac GTO convertible before the release of XxX: The Return of Xander Cage. Promotions and marketing aside, this is still the opportunity to drive one of the original muscle cars. It's not clear if this is an original GTO or a Pontiac Tempest that was converted, but does it really matter? Old cars never drive as well as you hope, so, as long as it looks and sounds awesome, who cares? The owner listed on Turo is Xander C., Vin Diesel's character from the XxX franchise. This is the car that was used in the original 2002 film, and from the photos it appears to be in better shape than many other movie cars. The exterior is mostly stock, with some slight modifications to the lighting, wheels, exhaust, and trim, with the addition of a funky looking hood scoop that the listing claims shoots flames. It's not clear if it functions as an actual intake because there aren't any notes about what rests under the hood. The listing does ask for premium fuel, so more than likely it's some variation of a high-compression V8. Inside, the dashboard looks like someone raided the AutoZone accessory aisle. There are gauges, dials, toggle switches, and readouts galore. The listing also claims the Goat is packing a rocket launcher and a weapons stash under the seat. $999 per day isn't cheap, but it's less than you'd pay for a day with one of the rent-an-exotic shops you see in Los Angeles or New York. If you're not in Tucson or the price is a little too steep, Turo has what it's dubbed the Adrenaline Collection. The name may be hyperbole, but the lineup of cars is actually really solid. A quick glance reveals a 2015 Lamborghini Huracan, 2001 Ferrari 360 Spider, and a 1969 Jaguar E-Type. The car list keeps expanding, so if this proves popular, look for more cool stuff in the future. NHTSA could add 1M cars to GM recall
Wed, 13 Mar 2013
The Detroit Free Press is reporting that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration may expand a recall campaign for faulty brake lamps. The agency is currently looking into complaints that certain 2004-2011 Chevrolet Malibu models as well as some 2007-2009 Saturn Aura sedans may have brake lights that do not illuminate when the driver presses the pedal. Alternatively, the lamps may also illuminate without input from the driver. General Motors recalled 8,000 Pontiac G6 models from the 2005 model year for the same problem, and NHTSA is currently investigating whether to add 550,000 more G6 models built between 2005 and 2009 to the list for the same issue.
In addition, investigators are currently examining 97 complaints from Malibu and Aura owners with the same trouble. If NHTSA adds those models to the recall campaign, more than one million units could be covered. GM, meanwhile, says there have been no accidents or injuries as a result of the problem.
