I am selling my recently-restored 1984 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am.

Car was purchased in June of 2012. It has the original 305 V8 with 190-195 compression on all cylinders. It runs strong. It also has the original 700R4 auto tranny which shifts smoothly. The car runs and drives great, and I recently had the A/C system recharged and converted to 134a refrigerant gas.

I've spent more than $15k restoring the car, and this is a short list of what I've done to date...

    • Complete engine & transmission  mechanical inspection and service
    • Car was repainted (2012) the original Dark Royal (slate) blue metallic with silver ground effects
    • New 1984 hood sticker and emblems
    • New (not yet installed) lower silver side stripe decals (included as part of the sale)
    • New windshield and seal
    • Cabin floor covered with sound-deadening material
    • New ACC carpet and jute padding
    • Newly restored original-equipment steering wheel (leather)
    • Newly recovered shifter knob and e-brake lever (leather)
    • Car interior looks and smells brand new!
    • Engine bay detailed
    • Many engine parts have been powder coated or hydro printed
    • New battery
    • New Tokico lowering springs
    • New Tokico struts and shocks
    • OEM 20-slot wheels detailed
    • New BF Goodrich tires
    • Period-correct OEM radio/cassette with discreet AUX plug for MP3 player
    • New rear speakers
    • New aircraft-firewall-material hoodliner
    • New Edelbrok intake manifold
    • New Magnaflow cat converter and 3-inch exhaust
    • New power window and power door lock motors
and much, much more.

When I purchased the car back in 2012 (I paid $3,000 for it), I started a builder's log on the Third Gen website, featuring more than 1000 posts and hundreds of photos with details on what I did—or had done—to the car. I think that chronicle will give you a good understanding of all the time and money I invested in this project.

So, why am I selling my Trans Am?

I own another T/A—a 1989 Turbo—which I would like to restore, so this one has to go, as I do not have the room to store both while I work on my '89.

Since I got the '84, it has been kept garaged and it has not seen rain. I have taken excellent care of this car. Of course I hope the new owner will love it and care for it just as much.

Trans Ams of this vintage are hard to find in nice condition, and this one is ready to be driven to the next car show. Items that still need attention include the fuel gauge (not working), and the power window switches sometimes stick, even though they are brand new replacement parts.

Don't let this one get away. I am offering the car locally, so I reserve the right to end the auction early if I sell it to a Central Florida buyer. (I live in Orange City, between Orlando and Daytona Beach).

Auction ends this Sunday at 5 p.m. PT (8 p.m. ET)
 LOW RESERVE PRICE

Someone's going to own this car this weekend, but if you want insure you'll be that lucky person, I have set a more-than-fair Buy It Now price, which gives you the opportunity to secure the purchase of this car immediately.

You won't be able to restore a 1984 Trans Am, to this level, for less money than my Buy It Now price. To give you a basic example of what went into this car and the attention to detail, I spent close to $500 just having the steering wheel, shifter, and e-brake knobs restored!

I know that I am totally upside-down on this one, and—as they say—my loss is your gain. But as long as you are a 3rd generation Pontiac Trans Am lover, and you want to have a good car to enjoy for years to come, I am okay with that.

Thank you for your interest!

The Small Print: Please bid ONLY if you intend to buy. Buyer must submit a $1000 PayPal deposit within 24 hours of end of auction, and buyer agrees to pay any remaining balance within 7 days of the close of the auction. Payment in full and title transfer are required before buyer can take delivery of the car. Once the transaction is complete, car must be removed within 10 days after transfer is complete. Car is sold AS IS, WHERE IS, NO WARRANTY.

Porsche Sports Car Together Fest is a labor of many Porsche loves

Sat, Sep 17 2022

Over Labor Day Weekend, Porsche held its second annual Sports Car Together Fest (SCTF) at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. We happened to be nearby, so we swung by to check out an event we’d never heard of until a few weeks before. Reading about it on Porsche's U.S. web site made us think it would be something like Rennsport Reunion for the Midwest. Turns out SCTF is just as much of a different kind of fun. The fest Tom MooreÂ’s the man behind Dark Horse Motorsports, the motorsport consultant for Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) PR. "People love Rennsport Reunion, but thatÂ’s every three to four years," he explained. “We wanted to gather people on those off years, and we didn't want to just do a mini Rennsport, because thatÂ’s its own thing. WeÂ’ve maintained the motorsport history at Rennsport. Here [at SCTF], we're doing the current look at what Porsche racing is for." In this case, that means gathering what Moore called "our Porsche motorsport pyramid." ThatÂ’s the range of enthusiast drivers from novice to hotshoes trying to get to top-tier endurance racing, "[starting] with the progression from Porsche Club of America track days up to the top of the ladder of one-make racing in North America," the Carrera Cup North America, a series made up of nothing but the latest 500-horsepower 911 GT3 Cup cars.  The three days of racing action allowed almost any kind of Porsche owner interested in clipping apexes to compete around an Indianapolis Motor Speedway layout tweaked with an infield section. This year, that included ex-NASCAR star Jeff Gordon, coming out of retirement to reunite with his longtime NASCAR crew chief Ray Evernham for the top-class Cup races.  Evernham told us Gordon hasnÂ’t raced in five years and he hasnÂ’t been a crew chief in 22. On very short practice, Gordon finished in 14th in the Pro Class in the first Carrera Cup race of the weekend driving the #24 Hendrick Performance Group Porsche, and 11th in the second race. Afterward, he said, "I made a pass on the white flag lap. That made my whole weekend Â… I must say that yesterday, I thought ‘man, I am getting beat out hereÂ’ and I donÂ’t like that. If I am going to be in an environment like this, I want to be competitive. But today turned the corner for me. So, I hope I get to do another one day."  When we strolled the paddock after the event, exposed sheet metal proved "Rubbing is racing" is a thing in the Carrera Cup as well as NASCAR.

GM repairing 40,500 Pontiac Vibes as part of Toyota airbag recall

Wed, 09 Apr 2014

General Motors has confirmed to Autoblog that the Pontiac Vibe is included in Toyota's just-announced recall action. The Vibe and the Toyota Matrix share a large number of parts, including the affected cable to the airbag.
"About 40,500 Pontiac Vibes from the 2009-2010 model years are included in the Toyota recall. Toyota designed and engineered the Vibe for Pontiac. GM will service customers with these vehicles when Toyota makes the parts available," said GM recall spokesperson Alan Adler to Autoblog in an email.
The recall covers 1.3 million Toyota units in the US, including 2009-2010 Corolla, Matrix and Tacoma, the 2008-2010 Highlander, the 2006-2008 Rav4 and 2006-2010 Yaris, plus the addition of the 2009-2010 Vibe. The models all have their airbag module attached via a spiral electrical cable. The connections on this cable can be damaged when turning the steering wheel. Once broken, the airbag deactivates and the airbag warning light comes on. Toyota has an improved part, but it's still making preparations to begin repairs. It will begin notifying owners soon.

Junkyard Gem: 2001 Pontiac Bonneville SSEi

Sat, Jun 19 2021

The General's Pontiac Division sold Bonnevilles from 1958 through 2005, which turned out to be well over half of the marque's existence. Named after the Bonneville Salt Flats, some Bonnevilles were huge but pretty quick, others were slow-motion land yachts, and some were nearly indistinguishable from their Buick and Oldsmobile brethren. The final generation, sold for the 2000 through 2005 model years, were among the quickest and most distinctive-looking Bonnevilles ever built, but they arrived in showrooms at a time when the clock was ticking for the division's very survival. Today's Junkyard Gem is one of those cars, an '01 with the hot-rod SSEi package. The Bonneville SSEi first appeared in the 1992 model year, just a year after the Buick Park Avenue Ultra was the first of many GM cars to get the 3.8-liter Buick V6 with an Eaton supercharger bolted on top. Production of the Bonneville SSEi continued through the 2003 model year, after which the GXP version and its Cadillac Northstar V8 took over. The 2001 version of this engine made 240 horsepower, good for plenty of torque-steery fun. Could you get this car with a manual transmission? What do you think? Some cursory research indicates that 1970 was the last model year for a three-pedal Bonneville, and even those cars must be incredibly rare. This one looks to have been in nice shape when it arrived here, with the original manuals still in the glovebox. By 2006, the Bonneville was gone; four years later, Pontiac was gone.
