CUSTOM DESIGN & PRO-BUILT “CHOPPED” MERC S-55

1965 Mercury Monterey Custom / S-55 Chopped Pro-Street BUILT 390 FE

This car has taken years to build… decades in the making! A very unique “Chopped MERC” A 2-Door Sport Custom… real tribute to the Mercury S-55 Sport, which stopped as an option 1963, no production for 1964 & 1965 cars. This is the way the car should have been made!  FUNCTIONAL AIR SCOOP Shaker Hood & Bucket Seats... a real head turner!!

Best of Show… A TRUE ONE OF A KIND Vintage build!

HISTORY:  This car started its life as a low mileage Mercury Monterey Breezeway 4-door sedan. It was inspected & approved and is now legally titled as a 2-door coupe.  …in the late 80’s this car made it into the hands of a noted custom car builder, from stories told may have been in LA area of California?

This MERC had a true “frame off”” rebuild. The car was professionally trimmed down in size the middle…loosing the 4 door and back seat, roof, frame & door-lines completely rebuilt & professionally reworked… lightened & shortened by about 3 feet, well  fitting & very nicely done. The result of this classic custom build is an outstanding appearance & lightweight design, well proportioned, an awesome looking Vintage & Classic Sport Performance car….the way a Merc S-55 should have been made! !

RECENT UPGRADES: This last owner purchased the car just over 5 years ago for a very high price as it was rust free, had been driven very little with low miles and had history as a local show winner!! Over the last few years, he has added well over $15,000 into upgrades, new custom deep triple layered paint & performance rebuilds. This car not only looks great, it performs & sounds great too. Some additions from notes and receipts are as follows:

v  Ford 390 FE V8 Professionally Built by O’Neil’s Custom Engines

v  Ford C-4 Transmission & Torque Converter Built by Randy’s Racing Transmissions

v  B & M Racing Style click shift, New floor shifter installed

v  All new deep dish chrome wheels & moon style hubcaps

v  All new performance radial tires

v  Deep Black 2-stage paint, with satin racing black hood stripe

v  Matching Black paint under hood, show style presentation

v  Shaker Hood Assembly - B & M Fresh Air Intake

v  Racing Style Highback dual bucket seats

v  Emblems shaved, custom body trims & Metallic Teal side accents

v  New Mercury “factory tinted” windshield installed, lexan lightweight side windows.

v  Custom surround sound stereo system, new carpets, custom door panels & more.

v  All new hoses, alternator, radiator, battery, all new brakes…etc.

v  Performance Cam, High Energy Electronic Ignition & Wires

v  Hooker Competition Series Free Flow Headers

v  All new dual stainless free flow exhaust system

v  Suspension upgrades with Rear Air Shocks.

v  Dual Power rear antennas

This Custom Built Mercury was recently triple layered in deep Tuxedo Black paint & clear coated. The shaker hood has a Satin Black, subtle stripe down the center middle hump. From stories I have heard, owner had been approached to do a magazine layout for the car when completed! This car would be great on the cover of a magazine, and has not as of yet been featured or used for any model, photo or magazine layouts.

Receipts are there for the brakes, engine & most work done. You can see the performance BBF additions in photos with Edelbrock intake & Edelbrock carburetor, high voltage ignition system & more.  A special built 2,200 RPM Stall Torque Converter, B&M Floor Shift setup.. engine analysis specs show engine balanced, bored .030 over, HP Pistons 10:1, HD springs, free flow heads… Comp Extreme Energy Cam & more. I was told this light designed car now rated well over 400 HP, and is close to picking up front wheels which I did not test! It was designed for the addition of an actual blower. This car would look great with ladder/wheelie bars added!

I had fun taking this unique classic out for photos.. jaws dropped, cars pulled up and drivers loved it...”Cool Car” …”what is it?”…”WOW - Sounds Great!”  It is a true shaker under the hood …with mild overlap cam that sounds big block nasty at lights, Hooker Headers & new stainless dual exhaust. The stereo system worked well, sounds amazing with 4 built-in speakers behind you… dual switches put up the classic rear sloped antennas… it has the Breezeway option full  rear drop window, factory power steering & power brakes. Inside headliner, dash, chrome, wheel, etc… all beautiful as you can see in photos.

Notes: …this is an estate, where I am assisting with sale of this very unique car. There is a custom cockpit lighting cluster that is installed above mirror, but still needs power as some new wiring below dash ready to be re-connected with gas gauge ground & mounting of the breezeway window switch, looks ready under the dash.      The air shocks have an air nozzle in the trunk, and I did not test or add any air. The new Les Schwab full warranty battery was on my charger at time of photos and it will be put back into car. There is a new rubber trunk seal that also came with the car that had not been put in yet after new paint was completed. I HAVE MORE PHOTOS if desired. SEE PHOTO UNDERNEATH… this car has never been painted underneath or undercoated… no cover up and metal everywhere is solid, no rust, amazing condition for vintage!!!  I can see only normal surface age & discolorations, normal dirt from driving. The trunk is rock solid too, and as you can see, the trunk areas have been fully lined for show. Odometer reads 024325. All emblems shaved from car except front grill red verticle piece and 2 mecury heads on either side of roof... note that emblem shows the 3 horizontal laid Mercury stars, and that is what was custom matched to the rear trunk and sides. Inside on the dash it says Mercury...that is only spot! This is not yet a #1 show car. There are minor additions, work & completions to take it to that level and as I have noted, and is priced accordingly. I do have the complete new wheel & spare tire & jack assemblies. All books & receipts & box of parts included with car.

SHOW& GO!! The car runs strong and drives well! It sounds awesome! (I have taken a video on my camera but will need my son to assist with posting soon) THIS CUSTOM MERC has a free flow exhaust and coupled with the headers sounds impressive…. sounds as good as it looks! I am helping to move this striking & unique vintage muscle car on to a lucky new owner. I can honestly say someone is going to get one heck of a very unique, true muscle car in overall impressive condition … a true head turner that you can hear coming your way!!

Feds open investigation into Chevy Express, Ford Freestar rust issues

Wed, 28 Dec 2011

'Tis the season... for road salt. And with that, comes rust. And what does rust bring? Well, for Ford and General Motors, a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation. According to The Detroit News, NHTSA is looking into potential recalls issues with Chevrolet Express vans and Ford Freestar minivans.
The feds have received five complaints that rust has caused leaking fuel filler pipes on 2003 Express vans. Separately, seven complaints have been filed over excessive rust in the rear wheel wells of 2004 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans. The Freestar and Monterey went out of production in 2007. Neither issue has resulted in any crashes or injuries, according to the report.

Impala SS vs. Marauder: Recalling Detroit’s muscle sedans

Thu, Apr 30 2020

Impala SS vs. Marauder — it was comparo that only really happened in theory. ChevyÂ’s muscle sedan ran from 1994-96, while MercuryÂ’s answer arrived in 2003 and only lasted until 2004. TheyÂ’re linked inextricably, as there were few options for powerful American sedans during that milquetoast period for enthusiasts. The debate was reignited recently among Autoblog editors when a pristine 1996 Chevy Impala SS with just 2,173 miles on the odometer hit the market on Bring a Trailer. Most of the staff favored the Impala for its sinister looks and said that it lived up to its billing as a legit muscle car. Nearly two-thirds of you agree. We ran an unscientific Twitter poll that generated 851 votes, 63.9 percent of which backed the Impala. Muscle sedans, take your pick: — Greg Migliore (@GregMigliore) April 14, 2020 Then and now enthusiasts felt the Impala was a more complete execution with guts. The Marauder, despite coming along later, felt more hacked together, according to prevailing sentiments. Why? On purpose and on paper theyÂ’re similar. The ImpalaÂ’s 5.7-liter LT1 V8 making 260 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque was impressive for a two-ton sedan in the mid-Â’90s. The Marauder was actually more powerful — its 4.6-liter V8 was rated at 302 hp and 318 lb-ft. The ImpalaÂ’s engine was also used in the C4 Corvette. The MarauderÂ’s mill was shared with the Mustang Mach 1. You can see why they resonated so deeply with Boomers longing for a bygone era and also captured the attention of coming-of-age Gen Xers. Car and DriverÂ’s staff gave the Marauder a lukewarm review back in ‘03, citing its solid handling and features, yet knocking the sedan for being slow off the line. In a Hemmings article appropriately called “Autopsy” from 2004, the ImpalaÂ’s stronger low-end torque and smooth shifting transmission earned praise, separating it from the more sluggish Mercury. All of this was captured in the carsÂ’ acceleration times, highlighting metrically the differences in their character. The Impala hit 60 miles per hour in 6.5 seconds, while the Marauder was a half-second slower, according to C/D testing. Other sites have them closer together, which reinforces the premise it really was the little things that separated these muscle cars. Both made the most of their genetics, riding on ancient platforms (FordÂ’s Panther and General MotorsÂ’ B-body) that preceded these cars by decades. Both had iconic names.

Petrolicious shows Mercedes 280SL as architecture in motion

Wed, Jun 17 2015

While still an absolute beauty today, the design of the pagoda-roof W113 Mercedes-Benz SL was revolutionary when it debuted. Moving away from the soft curves of the previous SL models, the all-new generation brought an upright, angular shape that was as much architectural as automotive. In the latest video from Petrolicious, owner and architect Daniel Monti expounds on the inspiration that he gets from his 1969 280SL's fantastic styling. The roof is the most famous design feature of this generation of SL. Look at the top from the front or back, and you can see a gentle, downward arc that evokes the look of a pagoda. That one styling element is also a fabulous counterpoint to a vehicle that is largely more angular than curvaceous. Petrolicious wonderfully illustrates how some of the SL's form-follows-function design aesthetic can be found in the architect's work in this video's heaping helping of mid-century modern goodness.
