Mercedes-Benz says no to price premium on S550 PHEV

The good news? Mercedes-Benz won't be charging any extra for the plug-in hybrid version of the S550 sedan compared to the gas-powered version. The bad news? The gas-powered version is really expensive. The S550 Plug-in Hybrid's pricing will start at a tidy $95,325, the same as the conventional S550, according to Cars Direct. For that price, buyers get a car that delivers 436 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque while having the ability to go as far as 18 miles on electric power alone, assuming that the driver in question isn't trying to use all 436 horses. But just in case he or she is, the car can also go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in about five seconds. There's been no word on a fuel-economy rating from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) but the sedan gets 84 miles per gallon on the more lenient European driving cycle. It's unlikely to anywhere close to that stateside, but some folks still might feel they got their money's worth (ha ha) by adding a plug. The S550 Plug-in Hybrid goes on sale in California later this month. The model was first unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2013 and shown off at the Los Angeles Auto Show late last year. Mercedes goes boating again with G63 AMG-inspired Cigarette

Cigarette Racing has another Mercedes-Benz AMG-themed boat headed out to sea. After The SLS AMG-inspired 46-foot Rough Rider in 2010 and the C63 AMG Black Series-inspired 50-foot Marauder in 2012, this year's Miami Boat Show will introduce the 42-foot Huntress, theme provided by the G63 AMG.
The latest Cigarette homage is less overly racy than the ones before, befitting a watercraft modeled off a performance SUV, but don't let the looks fool: there are five Mercury Racing Verado 350SCi outboard engines, each one of them packing a supercharged inline six-cylinder with, natch, 350 horsepower. Those 1,750 horses will be good for 78 miles per hour when you've got some saltwater underneath you.
If you're in South Florida this week, Booth B-23 at the Miami Convention Center could be your best place to see it. Otherwise, like the 536-hp G63 AMG, it could be hard to catch. There's a press release with more information below.

Mercedes to market Tesla-powered 2014 B-Class EV in U.S.

Looks like another Tesla Motors investor will be looking to cash in on their connection. Autoweek reports Mercedes-Benz will offer their B-Class in the U.S. with Tesla propulsion.
The magazine says their source at the German automaker confirms plans for a B-Class electric-only vehicle. While Tesla already provides battery packs for the battery-powered Smart ForTwo, the B-Class EV will reportedly have Tesla batteries, motor and other components. U.S. residents should be able to procure one sometime in 2014.
The same Mercedes source says plans for a hybrid B-Class have been postponed for now. Adding a range-extending, gasoline-powered engine to an electric vehicle would put the car into a different class for which rebates and incentives aren't as favorable in the States.
