1990 560SEC Gen II Euro (Japan) version. 282 HP stock rating. Euro bumpers, euro lights, euro VIN, and all import documentation.  VIN is WDB1260451A528429

This is a VERY rare car in the US, I'd guess there's no more than a handful of these in the country, due to changes in the gray market that occurred in the mid-1980s.  It is very unusual to find a gray market W126 car in the US newer than about 1985 or so.  A lot of money was spent getting this car to the US and having all the proper steps taken to make the car legal here.  Thankfully, the euro exhaust configuration was retained, instead of the US system with the power-robbing crossover pipe behind the engine.  The euro-spec engine has higher compression, more aggressive camshafts, and a wider array of engine control capabilities compared to the US versions.   Catalytic converter is still present in the exhaust system, and was recently replaced.

Rear axle ratio 2.65:1, also an upgrade compared to the US versions.

Since this is a "Gen 2" W126, it's got lots of nice upgrades over the earlier, more common, Gen 1 versions.  The leather seats have perforated center panels, and were revised to be more supportive and comfortable.  The door panels are restyled as well.  The bumpers are revised front and rear.

Timing chain/guides done less than 2K miles ago with OEM parts.
COLD Air conditioning!  Converted to R134 already.
C140 glass moonroof installed, with new MB sunroof seal (seal is still "breaking in" so it is quite stiff right now, but that will resolve within a few weeks).
Aftermarket Kenwood stereo installed, including component speakers in door panel pods.
2 amplifiers, and 12" subwoofer. 0 gauge wiring.
Headliner just redone in black Ultrasuede.
Brabus rear package shelf, upholstered with black Ultrasuede - original is boxed up along with powered roller blind/sunshade.
New intake manifold gaskets, new Bosch injectors, new seals and cups for injectors, etc.
New 1000CA battery
High end window tint - Formula One "Pinnacle" line, legal level (30%).
New clutch fan and electric fan switch.
Fuses replaced with copper ones.
New bosch cap and rotor, new Kingsborne plug wires, new Bosch w7DC0 plugs (correct spec for the euro motor).
New Bosch ignition coil.
New fuel filter and accumulator.
Euro headlighs, taillights, and front corner lights, in great shape.
New brake rotors, Akebono ceramic pads, hoses, rebuilt calipers, fresh fluid.
2 layers of sound deadening added to various locations throughout the car.
Viper Keyless Entry added.
Lloyd floor mats 1 month old - original carpet in excellent condition too!
Silberpfeil steering wheel, newly restored with perforated black leather.
Original steering wheel available.
Self leveling rear suspension works great!

OZ Futura 3-piece forged aluminum wheels in beautiful condition!  Continental ExtremeContact DW tires with less than 1500 miles.  This wheel/tire setup cost me close to $3000!

The engine runs very well at all speeds - super smooth, lots of power, and an absolute rush from about 70-110mph. Transmission is smooth and responsive.

I believe in honesty in ebay listings, I am not trying to hide problems here.
Issues with the car:

Cruise control does not function.  Probably just the control module, I have a spare that is known to be good but I haven't had the time to swap it out.
Clunk in front end over some bumps - I believe this is due to worn brake guide rod bushings.  I have a set of Lemforders that will go with the car.
Flex discs are due for replacement.
Seat belt presenters are disconnected.  Driver's side would extend but not retract, passenger side worked fine.  I have 2 new presenter modules (very $$$) to go with the car.
A few minor exhaust leaks (pinholes, and a broken clamp).
Leaky steering box (a VERY common W126 problem).
Minor rust in a few locations -- near front subframe mounts, and under rear shelf/rear window, visible from inside trunk.  Most sellers won't disclose this, but it is a very common problem spot in this chassis.

I welcome pre-purchase inspections of the car.  Bid to own it - winning the auction is not your ticket to showing up and deciding whether or not you want the car.  It's a contract to OWN the car unless it's been materially misrepresented (it's not).  I have close to 1000 positive feedback on eBay.

$500 deposit due within 48 hours of auction end.  Balance due within 7 days.

13-year-old boy swipes dad's Mercedes, drives across Europe

Wed, 16 Jan 2013

After an argument with his adoptive parents that resulted in them taking away his mobile phone, an angry 13-year-old boy ran away from his home in Italy and headed straight to Poland to meet his biological sister. But instead of taking the train or hitching a ride, like most on the run, the young man (an accomplished go-kart racer and car enthusiast) grabbed the keys to his father's Mercedes-Benz and jumped behind the wheel for an impromptu road trip.
With less than 200 euros (about $270) in his wallet and a passport in his pocket, the youngster managed to put more than 500 miles between himself and his distraught parents, crossing two international borders in the process, before German police nabbed him just shy of the Polish border. According to reports, the vehicle was tracked - it wasn't his driving that alerted authorities to his location.
Reunited with his mother and father, who traveled to Germany to retrieve both their son and the vehicle, the young man apologized and acknowledged his error. As a result of his actions, social workers will increase checks on the family and we can be sure his parents are now hiding the keys.

Why all of this year's F1 noses are so ugly [w/video]

Fri, 31 Jan 2014

If you're a serious fan of Formula One, you already know all about The Great Nosecone Conundrum of 2014. Those given to parsing each year's F1 regulations predicted the strong possibility of the so-called "anteater" noses as far back as early December 2013. Highly suggestive visual evidence first came after Caterham's crash test in early January, with further proof coming as soon as Williams showed a rendering of the FW36 challenger for this year's championship. That car earned a name that wasn't nearly so kind as "anteater."
Casual followers of the sport - or anyone who gets the feed from this site - probably don't know what's happening, except to wonder why the current year's F1 cars are led by appendages that would make Cyrano de Bergerac feel a whole lot better about himself.
The short answer to the question of ugsome F1 noses is "FIA regulations and safety." The reason there are various kinds of ugsome noses is simpler: engineers. The same boffins who have given us advances including carbon fiber monocoques, six-wheeled cars, double diffusers and Drag Reduction Systems are bred to do everything in their power to exploit every possible freedom in the regulations to make the cars they're building go faster - the caveat being that those advances have to work within the overall philosophy of the whole car.

VW looking to MAN up, ditch Mercedes van deal

Wed, 16 Jan 2013

Unlike the US, the commercial truck market throughout the rest of the world is chocked full of competitors from many different automakers. Since 2006, Volkswagen has had a fullsize van called the Crafter that was a result of a partnership with Daimler AG and based on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. This partnership is supposed to last through 2016, but Reuters is reporting that VW might be looking to end its relationship with Daimler and create its own van in cooperation with German truck and bus maker MAN.
The article says that VW AG has more than a 75-percent stake in MAN, which would essentially be keeping the new commercial vehicle in-house. Even if VW bolts, Daimler still has a deal worked out in the commercial truck industry between its subsidiary Mitsubishi Fuso and Renault-Nissan to supply the other with different trucks.
