My family owned it from about 1984, until now. A very solid rust-free, low mileage example- now 71,000 original miles- it needs little reconditioning: the paint and leather are very good. There are a few small cracks in the dash, that you don't immediately see. One piece of wood at the console shows some age. There are minor dings underneath- one dent- and the chassis has probably never been detailed. Not perfect mechanically: it has been in storage for about 10 years. Running, and brakes are up. It probably needs some A/C work, and a tune-up. I suspect an ignition relay needs replacing. Easily a show quality car. Owner's manual and original toolkit, first aid kit, emergency reflector. Suspension is up, but needs checkout. (No suspension blocks found.) Good tread on tires, but old. Needs to be trailered; partly because of good cosmetics, partly to assure it gets there."

1979 Mercedes-Benz 6.9-liter 450SEL. 140-mph-plus top speed; world's fastest production sedan at that time. The OHC V8 produces 405 lb-ft of torque and has a dry-sump oil system. Last year built; considered the best sedan of its day. About $45,000.00 new. 0-60MPH in 7 seconds- for a car that weighs about 4,500lbs. Hydro-pneumatic, self-leveling suspension. One of these was featured in the movie 'Ronin'. About 500 were brought into the U.S.- and only US models had leather and climate-controlled A/C. The sunroof was optional. Factory alloys. Real- not clone, not grey market.

X1, 3 Series power BMW back into global luxury autos sales lead

BMW managed to eke ahead of Audi for the global luxury sales crown in February. According to Bloomberg, BMW saw deliveries swell by 7 percent in February, besting the 3.2 percent jump enjoyed by Audi and giving BMW a 407-unit delivery lead over its rival last month. Mercedes-Benz, meanwhile, continued to falter, with the brand selling some 37,229 fewer machines than BMW, whose factories are running at full capacity to keep up with demand. Models like the X1 (shown above) enjoyed a sales increase of 40 percent in February while the company's bread-and-butter 3 Series jumped by 26 percent.
Mercedes-Benz hopes to stem its continued market share loss with the addition of the entry-level CLA sedan to its portfolio in April. The company is set to roll out an updated version of its cash-cow E-Class at the same time, and a new-generation S-Class will follow along shortly thereafter. Meanwhile, the company is increasing production to meet demand for its A and B-Class models.

Online Find of the Day: Lexus-engined Mercedes pickup is a vintage hybrid

You have to love someone who gets incredibly committed to a very weird idea. What you see for sale here is a right-hand drive 1971 Mercedes-Benz 220D in South Africa, but this old Mercedes is now converted into a pickup, complete with bed cover, and there's big secret under the hood, too.
The pickup conversion appears well done based on seller Sedgefield Classic Cars' photos. Even the tonneau cover fits well. You could almost believe that this Mercedes lived its life as a Chevrolet El Camino-like pickup from the very beginning.
However, the rear-quarters conversion might not be the weirdest thing about this Mercedes. The original diesel is gone from the engine bay in favor of a Lexus V8. It seems really odd to pop the hood and find a Japanese mill in this German car, but the photos make it look like a fairly well performed swap. So, bravo to the crazy thinking. According to the seller speaking to Autoblog by email, "as far as we can establish, this was done a few years ago, with all Lexus components."

Mercedes to market Tesla-powered 2014 B-Class EV in U.S.

Looks like another Tesla Motors investor will be looking to cash in on their connection. Autoweek reports Mercedes-Benz will offer their B-Class in the U.S. with Tesla propulsion.
The magazine says their source at the German automaker confirms plans for a B-Class electric-only vehicle. While Tesla already provides battery packs for the battery-powered Smart ForTwo, the B-Class EV will reportedly have Tesla batteries, motor and other components. U.S. residents should be able to procure one sometime in 2014.
The same Mercedes source says plans for a hybrid B-Class have been postponed for now. Adding a range-extending, gasoline-powered engine to an electric vehicle would put the car into a different class for which rebates and incentives aren't as favorable in the States.
