What a candidate for a very mild restoration, is this 1977 Mercedes Benz 280SE! To be very candid and to get right to it, I bought this car for my wife, so we could attend the classic car shows together, (me in my Mopars, her in this car) I thought she would love it. She didn't. She is a modern car kind of gal. Old cars don't turn her on. So, it's got to go.  As the pictures show, this car looks great already. For a 36 year old car it is incredible. It is mechanically sound, basically. The transmission is beginning to slip a little when upshifting if prodded hard when really warm. Normal driving it seems okay. Probably just needs a band adjustment. Gas engine fires immediately. Idles fast. I haven't been able to slow it down. I bought brake pads for it when I first got it but it didn't really need them so I didn't install them. They are included in the auction. It brakes well. It steers well. I talked with the original owner a few times about it and got a history. With her input I can determine that this car has approx 150,000 miles on it. The speedometer works but the odometer does not. The left fender shows signs of a repair a long time ago, as shown in one of the pics. The only rust on the car is shown in the pics too. One small spot at the corner of the sun roof opening and one small spot at the bottom of the rear glass trim. The trunk floor and wheel well openings are all perfect. The leather Upholstery is pristine except for two small tears in the rear seat, which have duct tape on them. The following switches are in need of  replacement; A/C Compressor switch (I am certain the a/c would work with this switch), turn signal switch, right side window master switch. It has no radio. I put new tires on it just a few hundred miles ago. I drive this car myself as a daily driver. I had the radiator professionally repaired when I bought the car year before last. There is a brand new (Mercedes) hood pad included in the auction that I couldn't get the glue to stick to the underside of the hood. This car doesen't leak anything, water, antifreeze, oil,or transmission fluid. Would I drive it 500 miles to a new home? I don't think I would have THAT much faith in it although I really don't know of any reason it wouldn't. It doesn't run hot or anything. Please keepin mind that this is an old car and they break down, no matter how good of care you take of them. This car and any car its age has some issues. I have tried to  explain these issues beforehand. Why does it look so good? This car has been in a garage its entire life. It is a bit pampered. Please ask questions before bidding. If you intend to ship it, you will be responsible for all arrangements and cost.

Carlsson turns Mercedes-Benz SLK into 610-HP hill-climb clawer

Mon, 28 Jan 2013

Carlsson's race-tuned versions of the Mercedes-Benz SLK have been taking checkered flags for years, and we won't be surprised if its SLK 340 hill climber fares any different. Developed by multiple German and Swiss hill climb champion Reto Meisel, the carbon-bodied SLK 340 with lightweight brakes and a closed underbody weighs 1,716 pounds. Propelling that tiny bit of weight is a 3.4-liter V8 from Judd with 610 horsepower, and it rolls on 18-inch wheels shod in Avon tires.
It will debut at the Geneva Motor Show before beginning its racing campaigns in the summer. This one won't just tear up roads in Europe, though - Meisel says he plans on bringing it to the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The press release below has more details.

Mercedes-Benz GLA Concept gets mobbed in China

Sat, 20 Apr 2013

If the reception it received at the Shanghai Motor Show is any judge of marketplace acceptance, Mercedes-Benz has a hit on its hands in the form of the GLA Concept. And we can understand why - we're quickly becoming fans of Mercedes' recent styling language, as defined by new models like the CLA and this GLA Concept.
The big news on the exterior front are the headlamp clusters, which have frickin' laser beams attached to their foreheads embedded inside that are capable of projecting videos and images on a screen. Plus, a pair of video cameras are mounted on the roof that can be used to capture driving excitement or removed and taken with you. How cool is that? We just hope they have a substantial locking mechanism to prevent would-be thievery...
If the exterior is mostly ready for production, with a few of the more outlandish elements moved to the trash bin - like, for instance, laser-beam headlamps and removable action cams - the interior is a true custom job that screams concept loud and clear. There are all kinds of jewel-like finishes inside, along with transparent surfaces showing what looks like metal latticework underneath and some awfully thick looking leather with massive exterior stitching done by hand similar to what you'd find on a baseball glove.

Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG is Affalterbach's first big leap into the little pond

Tue, 05 Mar 2013

The recent history of AMG is turning out amped-up versions of Mercedes-Benz offerings that would hardly ever be mistaken for their sedate counterparts. Sure, you'd need to pay attention to pick a G-Class from the G63 AMG, but dual side-pipes are a quick giveaway. The Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG is not only a new era in Affalterbach's attention on smaller cars, it is probably also the most subtle transformation we can think of in the line-up.
Low and chunky enough in standard guise to make a sporting impression, the aesthetic makeover is confined to black trim around the lower rim of the hatch, black wheels with red brake calipers and a single, rectangular exhaust tip on either side of the diffuser. It's easier to make a positive ID inside, where the flat-bottomed steering wheel, red seatbelts and red-rimmed details say, "You know what I am..."
If the car is running, though, it won't take but a second. The 2.0-liter turbo spitting 360 horsepower and 332 pound-feet will grumble through a sport exhaust at idle, and bellow through the same on it's way to a 0-60 time of less than 4.5 seconds. And if you need something that looks a little harder - and you want those quad pipes - then the A45 AMG Edition 1 is the treasure you seek. There's a press release below for all the info you'll need until the hot hatch goes on sale in Germany later this year, and photos for the rest of us while we wait to find out if we'll get a chance to buy it.
